Book Application of an Advanced Atmospheric Mesoscale Model to Dispersion in the Rocky Flats Colorado Vicinity

Download or read book Application of an Advanced Atmospheric Mesoscale Model to Dispersion in the Rocky Flats Colorado Vicinity written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric Studies in Complex Terrain (ASCOT) program sponsored a field experiment in the winter of 1991 near Rocky Flats, Colorado. Both meteorological and tracer dispersion measurements were taken. These two data sets provided an opportunity to investigate the influence of terrain-generated, radiatively-driven flows on the dispersion of the tracer. We use the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS), originally developed at Colorado State University, to simulate meteorological conditions and tracer dispersion on the case night of 4-5 February 1991. The simulations described herein reveal considerable information about the extent to which the Rocky Mountains influence the flow along the Front Range, the importance of diffusion when simulating drainage flows and the computing needs of simulations in complex terrain regions.

Book Application of an Atmospheric Dispersion Model to Simulated Pollutant Releases in the Colorado Front Range

Download or read book Application of an Atmospheric Dispersion Model to Simulated Pollutant Releases in the Colorado Front Range written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1991 ASCOT (Atmospheric Studies in Complex Terrain) field study in the vicinity of the Department of Energy's Rocky Flats Plant, Colorado, was conducted to study the local and regional circulations and their interactions with synoptic flows over the complex terrain of the Rocky Mountains Colorado Front range. The study was combined with the Rocky Flats Winter validation Study (WVS) which had similar objectives. Tracer plumes were released as part of this field campaign over the period of February 3--19, 1991 from the Rocky Flats Plant. Twelve intensive experiments, centered around eleven-hour long surface releases of sulfur hexafloride (SF6)tracer material, were conducted by teams from a number of national laboratories, government agencies and private contractors. One-hourly averaged tracer concentrations were collected from approximately 170 surface samplers deployed along two concentric circles at a radius of 8 km and 16 km from the release location. The concentration patterns resulting from the transport and turbulent diffusion of the SF6 traces plumes within the atmospheric boundary layer during two night-time, one morning transition, and one day-time period were simulated for this paper. The scenarios selected represent the first-choice of all twelve experiments to be addressed, based on the quality and completeness of the collected data base and the presence of the desired meteorological conditions.

Book excerpt: This final report is submitted as part of the Green River Ambient Model Assessment (GRAMA) project conducted at the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest Laboratory for the US Environmental Protection Agency. The GRAMA Program has, as its ultimate goal, the development of validated air quality models that can be applied to the complex terrain of the Green River Formation of western Colorado, eastern Utah and southern Wyoming. The Green River Formation is a geologic formation containing large reserves of oil shale, coal, and other natural resources. Development of these resources may lead to a degradation of the air quality of the region. Air quality models are needed immediately for planning and regulatory purposes to assess the magnitude of these regional impacts. This report documents one of the models being developed for this purpose within GRAMA - specifically a model to predict short averaging time (less than or equal to 24 h) pollutant concentrations resulting from the mesoscale transport of pollutant releases from multiple sources. MELSAR has not undergone any rigorous operational testing, sensitivity analyses, or validation studies. Testing and evaluation of the model are needed to gain a measure of confidence in the model's performance. This report consists of two volumes. This volume contains the Appendices, which include listings of the FORTRAN code and Volume 1 contains the model overview, technical description, and user's guide. 13 figs., 10 tabs.
