Book Analysis of a Master of Music Recital

Download or read book Analysis of a Master of Music Recital written by Michael Meier and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saxophone is a versatile instrument utilized in a variety of musical styles. Paul Creston's Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra, Claude Debussy's Rhapsodie pour Orchestre et Saxophone, and Edison Denisov's Sonate pour Saxophone Alto et Piano are among some of the most important, original works for saxophone. The saxophone can also effectively be utilized in music from earlier time periods. For example, the saxophone is capable of producing tonal colors that closely mirror tonal colors associated with string instruments. These parallels make transcriptions of the Six Suites for Solo Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach particularly effective when performed on saxophone. This master's report, presented as extended program notes, includes biographical information about the composers, a stylistic overview of the selected works, and thoughtful performance considerations.

Book Brief Program Notes for a Saxophone Lecture Recital

Download or read book Brief Program Notes for a Saxophone Lecture Recital written by Nosara Vargas Gamboa and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The repertoire selected for this Master of Music lecture recital represents a variety of musical styles composed by composers of diverse backgrounds. Each selection discussed is considered a significant piece of saxophone literature for a variety of reasons. Composer Benjamin Gutiérrez was born in 1937 and is a highly respected and successful Costa Rican composer. Rapsodia para Saxofón Alto y Orquesta was composed in 1974. This work represents the first major classical saxophone piece ever written by a Costa Rican composer. The piece is dedicated to Costa Rican classical saxophone pioneer Norman Calderón. Fernande Decruck, born in France in 1896, was a female composer who studied at the Paris Conservatory. Her major works for saxophone were primarily dedicated to French saxophone pioneer Marcel Mule, including her Sonate en Ut# pour Saxophone Alto et Orchestre which was composed in 1943. Karel Husa, a world renown composer and Pulitzer Prize winner, was born in 1921 in the Czech Republic. He passed away in 2016 in the United States. Husa had a very successful career in France as a composer and as a conductor. His passion, however, was composition. He taught composition at Cornell University and spent the remainder of his life in America leaving behind a legacy of highly regarded compositions. Élégie et Rondeau pour Alto Saxophone et Orchestre was premiered by German and American saxophone pioneer Sigurd Raschèr. Robert Muczynski was a prominent American composer and pianist who was born in Chicago in 1929. He was a talented musician and composer who worked with numerous musicians who commissioned pieces from him due to his national and international successes. The Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano, Op. 29 represents one of his commissioned pieces. The composition was commissioned by saxophonist Trent Kynaston, who asked Muczynski to compose a piece to be premiered at the 2nd World Saxophone Congress in Chicago in 1970. Since its premiere, the Sonata has become part of the standard classical saxophone repertoire.

Book Analysis of Master of Music Recital

Download or read book Analysis of Master of Music Recital written by Brittney Davis and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saxophone is an instrument that can be utilized in many different styles of music. The repertoire presented in this master's report showcases important examples of pieces that vary with respect to style, time period, and pedagogical considerations. Alfred Desenclos' Prelude, Cadence et Final and Conrad Beck's Nocturne are important, original compositions for saxophone. Jacob Ter Veldhuis' Garden of Love is an excellent example of a work for soprano saxophone and electronics. The saxophone can produce non-traditional sounds such as slaptongue and multiphonics. Barry Cockcroft's Ku Ku requires the performer to utilize these extended techniques in order to produce unique tonal colors and effects. This master's report, presented as extended program notes with respect to the works mentioned above, includes biographical information regarding the composers, a stylistic overview, and thoughtful performance considerations.

Book Ryan Gamberino Master s Recital

Download or read book Ryan Gamberino Master s Recital written by Ryan Gamberino and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This master’s recital performance, presented on March 23rd, 2023, featured works for the saxophone from as many diverse cultures as could feasibly be fit into a 60-minute program. The performance featured composers from North America, South America, the Middle East, Australia, and Europe. My goal in presenting a diverse program such as this was to show the reception and utility of the saxophone around the globe. Composers have become well-versed in how to push the bounds of the saxophone as an instrument and as a medium for performance – this recital built upon the ongoing desire to see the instrument to its limits. Additionally, the work put into this recital pushed my personal limits as a musician. The techniques I honed in the pursuit of a successful performance included prolific use of the altissimo register of the saxophone, the ability to rapidly switch genres, and the ability to communicate a broad swath of characters one after the other. Pieces such as Sonata for Alto Saxophone by William Albright are renowned for their difficulty and deep thematic material. However, I felt it necessary to include pieces from underrepresented composers such as Turkish pianist Fazil Say. While his piece, Suite for Alto Saxophone and Piano, is a worthy challenge for any collegiate saxophonist, it is the unique perspective offered in his work that I feel the art music world is in dire need of. This recital was meant to push my technical limits as a musician, but more than anything, it allowed me to resonate with cultures around the world, all linked by one commonality – a mutual appreciation of the saxophone and music as mediums for communication.

Book excerpt: This recital program was selected based on composers who have influenced me over many years. I would like to introduce and perform for the audience works by those composers I have admired since I was very young, and who have influenced me throughout my musical development, and who have made me the pianist I am today. My program includes compositions from the Baroque era to the present day, and includes both original works and arrangements. In the program notes, I use composers' notes, music history, an analysis of the structure of the pieces, and my point of view as a performer/pianist. I wish to help people have more of an understanding of these works by giving some background on the composers and how the pieces were written.

Book excerpt: Ingolf Dahl's Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra is considered a master concert work in saxophone literature. The work was written for saxophone pioneer Sigurd Rascher who was active in commissioning new works for the instrument. Piet Swerts' Klonos, composed over 40 years after Dahl's Concerto, is a much newer composition. The work has gained national recognition as a popular competition piece and is a synthesis of new and old compositional styles. These two works strongly showcase the flexibility and virtuosity capable of the skilled saxophonist. This master's report, presented as extended program notes, includes biographical information about the composers, a historical and stylistic overview of the selected compositions, and a harmonic and formal analysis of the music with respect to performance considerations.

Book excerpt: In 1838, Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax created the saxophone. The saxophone was officially patented on June 24, 1846. Sax became the first Professor of Saxophone at the Conservatoire de Paris. This conservatoire has been and continues to be a historically important school of music in Europe. There have been four saxophone professors at the Conservatoire National Supèrieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris since the instrument's creation. These professors include: Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), Marcel Mule (1901-2001), Daniel Deffayet (1922-2002), and Claude Delangle (born 1957). Each instructor has championed the saxophone to new heights by refining pedagogical approaches and by advocating for the creation of new saxophone compositions. The music examined in this document represents pieces composed for each of the four saxophone professors who have taught at the Conservatoire de Paris. Paul-Agricole Génin's composition Variations sur un thème espagnol: pour saxophone alto et piano was inspired by Adolphe Sax, Fernande Decruck composed Sonata in C-Sharp for Alto Saxophone and Piano (1943) for Marcel Mule, Ida Gotkovsky wrote Variations pathétiques: pour Saxophone Alto et Piano (1980) for Daniel Deffayet, and Sequenza IX for Alto Saxophone (1980) by Luciano Berio was dedicated to Claude Delangle. All of these pieces demonstrate how composers continually strive to expand the boundaries of the skilled saxophonists' musical style, technical facility, and overall flexibility on the saxophone. This master's report, presented as extended program notes, includes biographical information about the composers, a historical and stylistic overview of the selected compositions, and a harmonic and formal analysis of the music with respect to performance considerations.

Book A Graduate Saxophone Recital

Download or read book A Graduate Saxophone Recital written by Gerard R. Weber and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 7:30 pm on the 5th of April, 2015, a saxophone recital was performed by the author in room 101 Recital Hall of the University of Florida Music Building. A variety of saxophone works from the late-twentieth and twenty-first centuries was presented. The program began with Paul Martin Zonn's concert fantasy Desmond Dream for alto saxophone and piano, followed by Katharina Rosenberger's La chasse adapted for two alto saxophones, Edison Denisov's Sonate for alto saxophone and piano, Niklas Breman's Dinkum Thinkum for soprano saxophone and electronics, and finally Dorothy Chang's New Stories for alto saxophone and piano. The composers featured on the program are of American, Swiss, Russian, Swedish, and Chinese heritage respectively and their music exhibits a wide gamut of musical and non-musical influences, ranging from science fiction literature and modern poetry to jazz, Chinese folk songs, and twelve-tone serialism. The common thread of inspiration for these works is the colorful voice of the saxophone. Each piece explores the extended range and techniques of the instrument, creating a contemporary soundscape that is characteristic of concert saxophone repertoire in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Book excerpt: The opportunity to select and perform qualified musical literature on a graduate recital offers the individual music teacher a challenge that is commensurate with the duties of his profession. A major responsibility of the music educator is the selection, rehearsal, and performance of the best possible literature that will meet the educational aesthetic needs of his particular performing group. It could be said that one of the most potent factors in preserving and expanding the musical culture of our society is the part played in it by the music educator and his wisdom and choice that he displays with this obligation. When the author began his recital preparation, little did he realize the amount of growth and progress that would have to take place before he would be able to schedule and perform a repertoire that would do justice to all concerned? To begin with, the writer had an insufficient realization of his own performance capabilities. During his undergraduate years he did not accomplish a high degree of artistry and facility in the performance medium either vocally or instrumentally. This, to be sure, was always deeply realized but justified inasmuch as the purpose of the music educator was to know a little about a vast and overwhelming area of performance demands. Originally, the recital program outline included performance on two of three woodwind instruments. Shortly thereafter this writer changed employment and devoted his energies to vocal and choral music. As a result of this change he began a serious study of the voice with Professor Marie Puffer at Utah State University with hopes of obtaining a proficient degree of performing ability as a competent music educator and amateur orator and operatic performer. During the summer of the 1964 the final recital draft was approved and called for the performance of alto saxophone literature, the singing of bass-baritone operatic, lieder, and the performance of an a Capella choir that is being directed by the author at Ogden High School. Justification of a recital that includes more than one performing medium could prove to be arduous to the competent specialist. But the writer firmly believes that there are many close similarities that exist between the vocal and instrumental performing medium. Certainly the discipline that is required by the notation system is worthy in itself. Expression, nuance, and the aesthetic nature of instrumental and vocal music offer innumerable parallels of complimentary study. H.A. Vandercook has this to say about expression in music....When a group has been drilled by an instructor who has experienced understanding of the grammar of music and the factors governing playing with expression, it is readily discernible that the players are attempting to meet the teacher's ideals; that they are striving in every way to secure pleasing results and to do something besides merely sounding all the notes... The importance of playing in good style with proper expression is too often neglected by the teacher, as a natural consequence, by those studying under him...The authority Arban, in referring to playing with expression, writes: "This circumstance(accent and expression) affords the performer and opportunity to rest while he continues to play and enables him to introduce effective contrasts into the execution at the same times 0́−It is not enough for the music educator to be a fine performer on an instrument. To a certain extent these attributes are inborn, primitive and natural in the musician. The music educator must be an artist as well, with a sound theoretical and musical knowledge of the fundamental basis for his success. Artistic performance is the result of combining sensitive taste and feeling with the established musical knowledge and technical "know-how0́+. The importance of "musicality" is often underestimated by the teacher of music in the public schools. Often this is the result of negligence on the part of the director to explore the vast area of style and interpretation. Equally important is the lack of fundamental musicianship. Nothing is more essential to a potential music educator than well-rounded musicianship with a thorough background of style and interpretation.
