I would like to introduce and perform for the audience works by those composers I have admired since I was very young, and who have influenced me throughout my musical development, and who have made me the pianist I am today. My program includes compositions from the Baroque era to the present day, and includes both original works and arrangements. In the program notes, I use composers' notes, music history, an analysis of the structure of the pieces, and my point of view as a performer/pianist. I wish to help people have more of an understanding of these works by giving some background on the composers and how the pieces were written.

Book excerpt: In this paper, I will introduce and discuss the two sets of concert programs on my Concerto concert and Solo recital. The repertories that I selected are from four different periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary. Each musical period has its own style and the understanding of that style is essential to a well-informed performance. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to make people become more familiar with these works by anatomizing the key elements such as the musical style, harmony, and historical background of these piano works. The anatomizations are in the hope of assisting people with a better listening and performance experience of these works. In my solo concert, I played four works: The Suite no. 5 in E major, HWV 430 composed by the Baroque composer George Frideric Handel, the Piano Sonata No. 14 in c minor, K. 457 by Classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the Romantic composer Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata in a minor, D 845, and contemporary composer Karen Tanaka's Water Dance. Dmitri Kabalevsky's Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 50 is the piece that I performed in my Concerto concert.

Book excerpt: W HAT I H A V E attempted in this book is a survey of song; the kind of song which one finds variously described as 'concert', 'art', or sometimes even 'classical song'. 'Concert song' seems the most useful, certainly the least inexact or misleading, of some descriptions, especially since 'art song' sounds primly off putting, and 'classical song' really ought to be used only to refer to songs written during the classical period, i. e. the 18th century. Concert song clearly means the kind of songs one hears sung at concerts or recitals. Addressing myself to the general music-lover who, though he possesses no special knowledge of the song literature, is never theless interested enough in songs and their singers to attend recitals of Lieder or of songs in various languages, I have naturally confined myself to that period of time in which the vast majority of these songs was composed, though not necessarily only to those composers whose songs have survived to be remembered in recital programmes today. I suppose this to be roughly the three centuries covered by the years 1650-1950, though most of the songs we, as audiences, know and love were composed in the middle of this period, in other words in the 19th century.

The Negro, a musical force, through his own distinct racial characteristics has made an artistic contribution which is racial but not yet national. Rather has the influence of musical stylistic traits termed Negro, spread over many nations wherever the colonies of the New World have become homes of Negro people. These expressions in melody and rhythm have been a compelling force in American music Ð tragic and joyful in emotion, pathetic and ludicrous in melody, primitive and barbaric in rhythm. The welding of these expressions has brought about a harmonic effect which is now influencing thoughtful musicians throughout the world. At present there is evidenced a new movement far from academic, which plays an important technical part in the music of this and other lands. The question as to whether there exists a pure Negro art in America is warmly debated. Many Negroes as well as Anglo-Americans admit that the so-called American Negro is no longer an African Negro. Apart from the fusion of blood he has for centuries been moved by the same stimuli which have affected all citizens of the United States. They argue rightly that he is a product of a vital American civilization with all its daring, its progress, its ruthlessness, and unlovely speed. As an integral part of the nation, the Negro is influenced by like social environment and governed by the same political institutions; thus page vi we may expect the ultimate result of his musical endeavors to be an art-music which embodies national characteristics exercised upon by his soul's expression. In the field of composition, the early sporadic efforts by people of African descent, while not without historic importance, have been succeeded by contributions from a rising group of talented composers of color who are beginning to find a listening public. The tendency of this music is toward the development of an American symphonic, operatic and ballet school led for the moment by a few lone Negro musicians of vision and high ideals. The story of those working toward this end is herein treated. Facts for this volume have been obtained from educated African scholars with whom the author sought acquaintanceship and from printed sources found in the Boston Public Library, the New York Public Library and the Music Division of the Library of Congress. The author has also had access to rare collections and private libraries which include her own. Folk material has been gathered in personal travel.

Book excerpt: Perotin (Latin Perotinus) was a most gifted composer of the Notre Dame school, which, during the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, was the first school to produce polyphony of international acclaim. Four of the works included in this collection are organa. A Perotin organum consists of a liturgical chant melody and text, which forms the tenor or cantus firmus. Its rhythm is altered. In approximately the same vocal range, the composer added one, two or three other voices, the duplum, triplum and quadruplum, all of them in one of the six rhythmic patterns known as modi. Seven of the works included in this collection are motets. These originated throug the tradition of troping, which consisted of the addition of a text to a melismatic piece of music. In motets, it was the duplum of an organum or clausula which was troped. When this happend the duplum was called motetus, and this name was adapted for the entire composition.
