Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work carried out at the Nuclear Physics Laboratory of the University of Colorado from November 1, 1979 through October 31, 1980 is summarized. Emphasis was on light ion reaction studies with the AVF cyclotron. The high resolution magnetic spectrometer has allowed studies of nucleon transfer, scattering, and charge exchange reactions throughout the periodic table. More experiments have been run with solid state counters this year than has been the case recently, as a broad range spectra of the light nuclei where only moderate resolution is demanded were examined. Several of these experiments were undertaken for more detailed studies of excitations seen with higher energy probes. Multiple coincidence measurements with neutron and gamma-ray counters have opened a new program in pre-equilibrium reactions and provided a new signature for the study of neutron-deficient final nuclei. The neutron time of flight program has expanded to higher excitation and to use of the (d, n) and (.cap alpha., n) direct nucleon transfer reactions. Three important experiments were completed at the EPICS pion scattering facility at LAMPF, and other low energy pion scattering data were obtained at TRIUMF. Several (p, d) runs at high energies were accomplished, some with polarized beams at TRIUMF. High-lying structures in medium mass nuclei were studied by the (p, n) reaction at Indiana. Interest in the use of polarized beams has been prompted by the theoretical successes in this area. This interest has led to the study of one- and two-nucleon transfer reactions on a range of nuclei at the Los Alamos tandem and at IUCF.

Book Medium energy Theory Group Progress Report July 1 1976 June 30 1977

Download or read book Medium energy Theory Group Progress Report July 1 1976 June 30 1977 written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research carried out during the contract period by R.A. Bryan, principal investigator, and associates R.B. Clark and B.J. VerWest is reported. Most of the work has centered on the nucleon-nucleon interaction at low to intermediate energies and has ranged from purely theoretical studies, such as the behavior of two-pion-exchange Feynman amplitudes at far off-shell initial and final nucleon momenta, to the more practical work of phase-shift analyzing nucleon-nucleon data. One has also investigated the possibility that the NN interaction is not invariant under time-reversal and have provided predictions for some relevant experimental observables for the case where such time-irreversibility is due to short-range processes. Finally, research on topics which fall in the domain of elementary-particle physics but which are felt can lend guidance in trying to determine the NN force at very short distances is completed; this is the current frontier in nucleon-nucleon research. A list of publications is included.

Book excerpt: The research during the year included new experimental and theoretical work on nuclear reaction mechanisms, nuclear polarization, and studies of nuclear structure. The principal equipment employed to carry out this research were the AEC-owned 5.5MeV and EN Tandem Van de Graaff accelerators and the on-line IBM 1800 Computer System housed in the Rice University-owned T.W. Bonner Nuclear Laboratories. New understanding was obtained during the year on problems of neutron physics, multiparticle breakup, nuclear structure, nuclear theory, and certain nuclear applications to medicine. (auth).

Book Progress Report of a Research Program in Experimental High Energy Physics September 1 1975 August 31 1976 Summaries of Research Activities at Brown University

This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program in strong interaction physics is carried out using counter-spark chamber techniques and a bubble chamber--hybrid system. The experiments have been and are being performed utilizing the accelerators of the National Laboratories at Argonne, Brookhaven and Batavia. The experiments of the electronic detector-spark chamber group include the following: a search for high mass boson resonances and determination of quantum numbers in antiproton-proton systems; a nucleon-nucleon and meson-nucleon elastic and quasi-elastic scattering experiment at the highest energies; a study of inclusive scattering, with associated multiplicity and pseudo-rapidity distributions, for hadrons on protons to hadrons at incident energies up to 175 GeV; an experiment to study the A-dependence of hadronic inclusive scattering at Fermilab; a search for charged, long-lived, massive particles up to the kinematic limit at Fermilab; and a study of hadronic final states produced by 100-GeV pions in association with direct leptons. The bubble chamber--hybrid system group is primarily engaged in several experiments at the Fermilab. A study of .pi.−p interactions at 147 GeV/c is completed, and a larger investigation of .pi./sup +/p, K/sup +/p, pp, and .pi.−p collisions at 147 GeV/c has begun. To the proportional hybrid system has been added a prototype forward gamma detector, enabling the precision measurement of up to 6 photons (3 .pi.°'s and/or eta°'s). Major aspects of multiparticle production using four different projectiles are being pursued. A precision intercomparison of corresponding processes produced by the different projectiles is underway, using identical experimental conditions. A list of publications is included.

Book Nuclear Structure at Intermediate Energies Progress Report April 1 1973 March 31 1974

Download or read book Nuclear Structure at Intermediate Energies Progress Report April 1 1973 March 31 1974 written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the year 1973 the program goals of carrying out experimental and theoretical studies in intermediate energy physics were continued. Work at the Space Radiation Effects Laboratory on small-angle pion Coulomb multiple scattering from nuclei was completed, and the small-angle Coulomb--nuclear interference studies and total cross sections were continued. Experiments on p--d breakup were started and, in addition to observing quasi-free nucleon-- nucleon scattering, a strongly enhanced neutron--proton final state interaction was observed at 585 MeV for the first time. In July 1973 the outfitting of the Rice-owned portable laboratory was completed, including operation of the AEC-owned PDP-11 online computer system, and the laboratory was moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico (LAMPF). In the fall of 1973 the group aided the LAMPF staff in tuning the P3 pion channel. Principal collaborators in all this work were the University of Houston group. (auth).

Book Nuclear Chemistry Progress Report Dept of Chemistry and Cyclotron Lab Univ of Maryland College Park August 1 1978 to July 31 1979

Download or read book Nuclear Chemistry Progress Report Dept of Chemistry and Cyclotron Lab Univ of Maryland College Park August 1 1978 to July 31 1979 written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research activities during the period August 1, 1978 to July 31, 1979 are summarized. The major effort has continued to be devoted to the study of nucleon exchange and energy dissipation mechanisms in damped heavy-ion reactions. Among the most significant accomplishments of the program during the past year has been the measurement of damped fragment spectra with discrete Z and A resolution. These studies provided detailed information on the A/Z equilibration and nucleon exchange processes in damped heavy-ion collisions, gave evidence for structure in the partially damped energy spectra for the Fe + Fe reaction, showed the importance of target-projectile mass asymmetry in governing the evolution of damped reactions, and gave tentative evidence for several new isotopes in the Z = 22 to 26 range. Other experiments utilized the fission-fragment angular correlation technique to determine the linear momentum transfer from projectile to target for 16O reactions in the 8- to 20-MeV/u region and to study simultaneously light-ion spectra (Z = 1 to 8) in coincidence with correlated events. These studies provided a much clearer picture of properties of central and peripheral collisions in heavy-ion reactions, as well as the transition between these two extremes. In addition, problems of Li, Be, and B nucleosynthesis and the relationship of these results to the question of the expanding universe were investigated. Individual sections with significant amounts of information are abstracted separately. (RWR).
