Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. K. Gospodarowicz, P. Hermanek, and D. E. Henson Attention to innovations in cancer treatment has tended to eclipse the importance of prognostic assessment. However, the recognition that prognostic factors often have a greater impact on outcome than available therapies and the proliferation of biochemical, molecular, and genetic markers have resulted in renewed interest in this field. The outcome in patients with cancer is determined by a combination of numerous factors. Presently, the most widely recognized are the extent of disease, histologic type of tumor, and treatment. It has been known for some time that additional factors also influence outcome. These include histologic grade, lymphatic or vascular invasion, mitotic index, performance status, symptoms, and most recently genetic and biochemical markers. It is the aim of this volume to compile those prognostic factors that have emerged as important determinants of outcome for tumors at various sites. This compilation represents the first phase of a more extensive process to integrate all prognostic factors in cancer to further enhance the prediction of outcome following treatment. Certain issues surround ing the assessment and reporting of prognostic factors are also considered. Importance of Prognostic Factors Prognostic factors in cancer often have an immense influence on outcome, while treatment often has a much weaker effect. For example, the influence of the presence of lymph node involvement on survival of patients with metastatic breast cancer is much greater than the effect of adjuvant treatment with tamoxifen in the same group of patients [5].

Book Performance of Existing Prognostic Factors for Colorectal Cancer Prognosis A Critical View

Download or read book Performance of Existing Prognostic Factors for Colorectal Cancer Prognosis A Critical View written by Manish Sarkar and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physicians use several prognostic factors to determine the state of a patient who is in the follow-up program of colorectal cancer. Casting this prognosis problem as a pattern classification problem, we have attempted to find how efficient the prognostic factors are for the classification. We have specifically chosen sixteen most important prognostic factors for conducting experiments. The experimental results show with strong evidence that the chosen prognostic factors have limited discriminatory capability, and hence their use in prognosis may not improve the prognostic efficiency satisfactorily. We present the data analysis and experimental results based on the real data collected from Singapore General Hospital.

It is also a paradigm for multimodal management, as the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy is often necessary to achieve the optimal outcome. Recently, international experts met in Heidelberg, Germany to discuss the latest developments in the management of rectal cancer, including the anatomic and pathologic basis, staging tools, surgical concepts including fast-track surgery and laparoscopic resection, functional outcome after surgery and the role of radio- and chemotherapy. This monograph summarizes this meeting and gives an extensive overview of the current concepts in management of rectal cancer.

Book Population based Cancer Survival Analysis

Download or read book Population based Cancer Survival Analysis written by Paul W. Dickman and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2022-12-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been increased interest in studying cancer patient survival in recent years, which has prompted advances in methods for estimating and modeling cancer patient survival. This book is the first focused on this topic, and uses real data and software to illustrate the methods involved. The supporting website provides code to enable readers to reproduce the analysis top illustrate the examples included in the book. The book presents methods for population-based cancer survival analysis, that is, the analysis of patient survival using data collected by population-based cancer registries. The primary focus will be on the statistical methods but non-statistical issues that arise in population-based studies of cancer patient survival, such as registration, coding and classification, and follow up procedures are also discussed.

Book Emergency Surgical Management of Colorectal Cancer

Book Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases

Download or read book Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases written by Mauro Monteiro Correia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-28 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed condition in oncology, affecting around 1.23 million individuals per year, according to recent statistics. Of these patients, about 50% will develop liver metastases and approximately 20% will present a stage IV disease at diagnosis. These statistics make colorectal liver metastases (CLM) an issue of major importance in current oncology. The area of CLM is subject to great and continuous advances, as its pathophysiologic mechanisms are better understood and more therapeutic and surgical options are developed. Consequently, all professionals involved with the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of CLM should be kept up to date with the latest advances on the field, to provide high standard medical care to their patients. This book is designed to present the state-of-the-art in CLM management and, in doing so, to review the current evidence on CLM, discussing all important topics in the field. Coverage is broad and comprehensive, encompassing introductory topics (history, definitions, epidemiology, etc.), basic science subjects (molecular biology, genetics, dissemination process, etc.) and practical clinical topics (tumor behavior, diagnosis, drug therapy, radiation therapy, surgery, ablation, multidisciplinary teams, etc.). Although comprehensive on the coverage and selection of topics, each chapter is concise and objective, dissecting topics in a practical and direct format. Evidences and recommendations are included. Chapters display a brief introduction of the common knowledge, go straight to the detailed revision of the most recent years of the literature, and end with practical closing observations. This book is a tool for professionals (general and cancer surgeons, HPB surgeons, clinical oncologists, gastroenterologists and medical residents) and interns who search for a qualified and reader friendly revision on topics concerning Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases.
