Book excerpt: Excerpt from Profitable Fruit-Growing for Cottagers and Small Holders of Land Varieties of fruits, notably of the most important - Apples - have been chosen for their usefulness, earliness in bearing, with good appearance and quality of the fruit, rather than for the predominance of some one particular merit esteemed by connoisseurs and, as far as possible, those sorts have been included which have proved the most productive in generally unfruitful years. Slow, shy, and uncertain bearers, no matter how handsome and excellent the fruit, are not the most useful for planting by cottagers and small holders in gardens or fields. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints and Encouragements for Profitable Fruit Growing The following treatise was mostly written as 3. Prize Essay, in competition with about sixteen others, for the Gold Medal of the Fruiterers' Company, last year. It was sent to the Judges under the motto of Hope On, and they reported that it was one of those deserving to be considered and described as particularly meritorious. The terms and conditions of that competition stated that the object is to encourage Fruit Culture by Cottagers, and others with small holdings, as a substitute for, or adjunct to, the ordinary methods of cropping their gardens and allotments with roots or other vegetables. This Essay differs from that to which the prize was awarded in one important aspect, namely, that it deals with every variety of fruit usually grown in England, whilst only the ordinary orchard fruits and the hardy bush fruits are treated of in the Prize Essay. Book Fruit Farming for Profit Rev To 1911

Download or read book Fruit Farming for Profit Rev To 1911 written by George Bunyard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Farming for Profit (Rev. To 1911): A Practical Treatise Embracing Chapters on All the Most Profitable Fruits, With Detailed Instructions for Successful Commercial Culture on the Kent System The author's reply is, that, living as he does in the greatest fruit - growing County, and being in touch with the largest growers elsewhere, he is still perfectly convinced that there is room for extension, but on modern lines. He would advocate the Kentish system, which may be stated briefly as intelligent fruit cultivation, as distinguished from the old system of fruit planting at hazard. One fact alone will answer all pessimists. It is this: the largest growers keen, hardworking, business men, who would be the first to feel lessening demand or the fall of prices below a paying scale - are yearly and constantly enlarging their acreage; and as they number their soft fruit produce by tons, and hard fruits by thousands of bushels, their action furnishes a complete reply. Book Poultry Keeping as an Industry for Farmers and Cottagers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poultry Keeping as an Industry for Farmers and Cottagers Classic Reprint written by Edward Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry Keeping as an Industry for Farmers and Cottagers Districts Board of Ireland has granted 100 and the Royal Dublin Society 50 for the purchase of stock birds to be distributed in the West of Ireland, the equally important details as to preparation of and mar keting poultry, and the collection, sorting, packing and marketing of eggs, have, as a rule, been dealt with in a most haphazard fashion. It is true that in Sussex, in Buckinghamshire, and Norfolk, so far as poultry are concerned, the trade is conducted on systematic lines. In these counties may be found examples of what can be done by method and enterprise, examples which ought to stimulate the efforts of breeders and dealers in all parts of the country. But in Britain we cannot point to any district where a system of collecting and marketing eggs has been adopted at all approaching that met with in France and other continental coun tries, except ih Devon and Cornwall. Last spring we made an enquiry into this question in Yorkshire, and learnt that, with a practically unlimited demand on the one side, and a specially favourable district for poultry keeping on the other, the York and Malton districts are dependent on foreign supplies during a large por tion of the year. A trader in York informed us that he sells about eggs per week, but, excepting the first three or four months of each year, he has to obtain Irish, French and Danish eggs to supply his needs. What is true there applies to many other sec tions of the country. In view of the revolution needed in the fattening, dressing and marketing of poultry, also in the collee tion and marketing of eggs, it has been deemed desir able to give considerable attention to these subjects, and the several chapters devoted thereto embody the experience of many countries, but which is as applicable to our own. We would impress upon all who take up poultry keeping as an industry the importance of paying every attention to this part of the subject, for neglect of it will be fatal to success.
