My research objective was to estimate the profitability of early to mid-gestational maternal protein supplementation on calf quality during drought. Biophysical data were collected from 72 cows assigned to one of three treatments over a three-year period: a control ration (C), nutrient restricted ration (NR), or nutrient restricted ration with protein supplementation (NRP). Enterprise budgets were constructed and a LP was estimated for a 400-acre ranch. While only the yearling treatment resulted in positive levels of profitability, supplementation in early to mid-gestation during drought may be able to enhance profitability with a slight premium for weanlings and finished calves, for small and medium producers in the region surrounding Albany County, Wyoming. Also, results indicate that overall profitability could be improved in producers retained ownership until either the yearling or finished stage.

Small ruminants are viewed as an integral, but not dominant component of complex agricultural systems. Particular emphasis is placed on sheep and goats in mixed herds grazing dry rangelands and in small mixed farm systems in medium to high rainfall areas. An analysis of major constraints -- ecological, biological, policy, and socio-economic -- leads to recommendations on the need for a balanced production system approach for research, training and development programs, and for a combination of support activities such as herd health programs, and formulation of favorable credit, marketing and pricing policies for small ruminants and their products.

This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. To fully realise this potential, much work needs to be done by a wide range of stakeholders. This publication will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.
