Book A Market Segmentation Analysis of Desired Ecotourism Opportunities

Download or read book A Market Segmentation Analysis of Desired Ecotourism Opportunities written by G. David Twynam and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1997 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study reported in this document, designed to identify ecotourism opportunities desired by visitors and potential visitors to northern Ontario, was conducted using two surveys. The first focused on summer travellers, visitors to the area, and residents. The second survey (a mail survey) focused on people with an interest in outdoor recreation as indicated by their membership in recreational organizations. Principal components analysis was used to identify different market segments among respondents. The objective of this segmentation was to divide a relatively heterogeneous group of actual and potential ecotourists into more homogeneous groups having similar product and service needs. Segments were identified that show potential demand for ecotourism in northern Ontario, thereby allowing operators and marketers in the tourism industry to identify specific target markets and develop product and service packages that best suit each segment.

Abstract: Nature-based tourism has undergone considerable expansion in recent decades and ecotourism is becoming increasingly popular around the globe. Within this context, international researchers have undertaken studies of ecotourism with different objectives, but, limited research has been conducted on the rapidly developing Asian ecotourism market. Most studies on ecotourism and ecotourists thus far have been conducted in the Western context and there is an urgent need for a more in-depth understanding of this market in an Asian context. The present study is a cross-regional one that aims at profiling domestic ecotourists in mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in order to identify the similarities and differences in their characteristics. Paired survey data from wetland-based and forest-based destination types has been collected from the Greater China Region, involving surveys in six parks. Two operational definitions of ecotourist, namely, scholarly-designation and self-definition, have been applied in the analysis of ecotourists' core values in terms of socio-demographic characteristics, travel motivations, environmental attitudes, activities undertaken, and awareness of ecotourism. Findings of this study reveal that the self-definition approach was better able to define the ecotourists, who had stronger pro-environmental attitudes than their non-ecotourist counterparts (i.e. general park visitors), than the traditional scholarly-designation method that uses a mix of supply and demand variables. Results suggest that nature-related travel motivations, awareness of ecotourism, and regional differences influence park visitors' (including ecotourists and non-ecotourists) environmental attitudes. In terms of destination type, this study compared wetland against forest destinations. It was found that ecotourists in the former were more active in participating in nature-observational activities such as bird-watching and wildlife observation, whilst in the latter, ecotourists had stronger pro-environmental attitudes and preferred engaging in hiking and jogging. Heterogeneous market segments among ecotourists in Greater China are also being suggested from the study as their core values vary between the three regions. This research has made a contribution to the understanding of ecotourists' core values in Greater China, and hence, the study also contributes to the planning, managing, and marketing, of ecotourism by tourism officials, park managers, and tourism agencies. Download or read book Ecotourism written by Yasmin Gillian Rahemtulla and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecotourism has become an attractive tourism-related activity for communities and conservationists across Canada. It provides an alternative source of income for communities, thereby diversifying their economies. It appeals to conservationists because it entails fewer cultural and environmental disruptions than other forms of tourism (such as adventure tourism, mass tourism, and nature tourism). Despite the increased focus on ecotourism, there is considerable debate about its definition. In this report we present and explore the competing definitions of this term, and introduce a working definition of ecotourism. We then examine ecotourism as a product and market segment and review the ecotourism market and profile. Finally, we examine applications and practices of ecotourism, with an emphasis on Canadian ecotourism studies.

Book Managing Educational Tourism

Download or read book Managing Educational Tourism written by Christopher P. Cooper and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly tourists are seeking learning and educational holidays. This interest has led to the provision of tourism product with some form of learning or education as an integral component, including cultural heritage tourism and ecotourism. The growth of offshore education and lifelong learning has stimulated cross-border movement for language learning, school excursions and university student travel. Reflecting this growth in educational tourism types, the author outlines the main forms of educational tourism, their demand and supply characteristics, their impacts and the management issues associated with them, taking a holistic systems-based perspective. The book argues that without adequate research and appropriate management of educational forms of tourism, the potential regional development impacts and personal learning benefits will not be maximised. The book highlights the need for collaboration and networking between both the tourism and education industries to adequately manage the issues surrounding the growth in educational tourism.
