Book The Deltics Baby Deltics

Download or read book The Deltics Baby Deltics written by Andrew Fowler and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Fowler is a well known writer of railway history, with a regular feature in Railway Herald Magazine. The Deltic class 55 Locomotives were some of the most successful, first generation diesels introduced to British Railways, being constructed from 1960-1962 and numbering twenty two, in the production class. The prototype machine was constructed in 1956 and was tested extensively on express trains on the London Midland and Eastern Regions of B R, until 1960. The interest and enthusiasm, for the class is reflected in the fact, that six examples of the class are preserved, including the 1956 prototype. The Baby Deltics, were a derivative Locomotive design, using one rather then two engines, for use on outer suburban and short main line semi fast services. Only ten Baby Deltics were constructed between 1961-1962, for use on services out of London Kings Cross. The Baby Deltics were all withdrawn within a decade, as they were not very successful in main line service.

Book excerpt: The story of creative and innovative behavior is about change," says author Gene N. Landrum. "In this case it is about thirteen iconoclastic individuals who have demonstrated a unique ability to deal with change in the world and redefine it for their own purposes." Landrum calls these individuals the "change masters," entrepreneurial geniuses whose innovations have had a profound influence on modern society: Steven Jobs (Apple Computer), Fred Smith (Federal Express), Tom Monaghan (Domino's Pizza), Nolan Bushnell (Atari), William Gates III (Microsoft), Marcel Bich (Bic), Solomon Price (The Price Club), Howard Head (Head Ski), William Lear (Lear Jet), Soichiro Honda (Honda), Akio Morita (Sony), Arthur Jones (Nautilus), and Ted Turner (CNN). Each of these business giants was motivated by what Landrum describes as an "innovisionary personality," which drove them to follow a unique inner vision of success and gave them an inviolable belief in themselves. Profiles of Genius demonstrates, through thirteen dynamic examples, that future entrepreneurial success in a global marketplace will depend on technological innovation, adaptability to change, intelligent risk-taking, and competitive drive.

Book Profiles in Leadership

Download or read book Profiles in Leadership written by Emilio Iodice and published by North American Business Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many violent events in history occurred despite the best advice and the best intentions of political, religious and economic experts of the time. The words that often rang out were that a general war or global economic upheaval could not happen because capable leadership, sound business logic and forces of common sense would keep minds cool and temper the actions of even the most radical of regimes. Calamities of the past could not be repeated. Skillful leaders would avoid it. This thinking, for instance, was reflected in the editorials and mindsets of those who led the major nations of the world into a global abyss that would dwarf any other previous human tragedy. It was all about leadership. Leaders failed to learn from what took place in earlier periods. They believed they had little in common with challenges faced by others in another age. There was little the "sleeping giants" of history could teach them. Modern leaders felt the secrets of the Caesars, Napoleons and Lincolns as to how to lead had little relevance for today. Their lessons were buried with them. They were wrong. We have much to learn. If we do not, we will replicate history in all its tragedy and misery. People repeat the past. Leaders duplicate the errors of those who came before them, if they do not discover their secrets and lessons of leadership and apply them to their daily life. This work is about individuals who faced incredible tests. They demonstrated leadership and life skills as useful today as they were when confronted with the perils of wars, civil strife, natural disasters and economic and social upheavals.
