Book Profiles in Discipleship

Download or read book Profiles in Discipleship written by Gregory C. Higgins and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALL CHRISTIANS are called to be disciples, yet there are many paths of discipleship. Having models of discipleship is essential to discovering our own unique paths as followers of Christ. Profiles in Discipleship explores twelve "images" or types of Christian discipleship that have guided the thought and action of two dozen influential figures in the Christian tradition. Combining history, theology, and spirituality, the book draws upon the richness of the Christian tradition to shed light on the crucial question of how to live a life of faithful Christian discipleship in today's world. The author presents profiles of twenty-four exemplars of Christian discipleship from the early church to the present day, including Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Christians. Among the remarkable men and women whose fives of discipleship are profiled in this book are soldiers and peacemakers, servants and liberators, and artists and protest poets. In studying the lives of these Christians who persevered in discipleship despite their many faults, readers will be inspired to look into their own souls and cultivate the seeds of discipleship there. Book From Pearl Harbor To Calvary

Download or read book From Pearl Harbor To Calvary written by Mitsuo Fuchida and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of the lead pilot of the Pearl Harbor attack and his conversion to Christianity. “As I looked across at my companion, I marveled afresh at the goodness of God-this man was my enemy; now he is my brother! Such is the miracle of the grace of God.”—Rev. Elmer Sachs, Director of Sky Pilots International. These words were written of Mitsuo Fuchida, who led the first wave of the air attacks on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 as a Captain in the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service. After the war, Fuchida was introduced to the gospel through the testimony of Jacob DeShazer. He began reading the Bible and eleven years after Pearl Harbor, he became a Christian. Fuchida spoke boldly of his conversion in his native Japan, and a few years later, he was recruited by Rev. Elmer Sachs to join Sky Pilots International. He came to the United States where he had the opportunity to share his story across the country. From Pearl Harbor to Calvary is the story of Mitsuo Fuchida’s conversion and ministry in his own words. Central to his narrative is the message that God works through even the most improbable of circumstances to further the gospel.

Download or read book In Search of Faith written by Howard W. Roberts and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore several of the stories of biblical characters who were seekers . . . The search by some of these people became watersheds for later seekers. For example, Abraham's search resulted in a clear understanding of radical monotheism. Ruth's seeking and searching challenged the notion that God's love and acceptance were tied to racial purity . . . Allow yourself to be a seeker as you read. May part of your seeking be to consider where your story and each of these stories intersect and may those intersections be places where you seek God and discover that already God is seeking you. --from the Preface In Search of Faith is an exploration of biblical characters who struggled to define their faith. Roberts help readers to identify with biblical characters; to discover kinship with seekers of another era; and to read about themselves in the stories. Some of the biblical characters discussed include Ruth, Jacob, Peter and Hosea. The stories of these biblical characters can be used in a sermon series or a course of study for a small group. In Search of Faith can be a guiding force in the daily lives of seekers by addressing the quest for personal meaning and the desire to belong in community.

Book Biography on C S Lewis

Download or read book Biography on C S Lewis written by The Hyperink Team and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK World famous author C.S. Lewis is best known for his numerous literary masterpieces and his role as a Christian apologist. Lewis’s career has touched people’s lives and attracted criticism in equal parts. From the stances he takes in his novellas to his approach to interpreting the Bible, much of Lewis's fame has come as a result of ruffling feathers with his incredible talent. Anyone who reads will have heard of Lewis's most famous novels, The Chronicles of Narnia. The series of seven fantasy books is what earned Lewis his reputation as a talented author. However, critics have accused Lewis of conforming to gender and racial stereotypes in the series. Despite these controversies, some of the novels have made into successful films. Aside from writing novels that appeal to children, Lewis also wrote a series of rather dark poems. As a far cry from his books that featured plucky heroes and heroines, Lewis's poems focused on morality and death. In "After Prayers, Lie Cold," which opens with "Arise my body, my small body, we have striven," Lewis addresses death and nature. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Lewis may be best known for The Chronicles of Narnia, but he also gained fame through publishing other fictional masterpieces. The Space Trilogy steps away from Lewis’ usual themes of myths and magic, and instead focuses on what life may be like on other planets. The series begins with Out of the Silent Planet, which is set on Mars. The main character, Elwin, discovers that Earth has been banished by all of the other planets, and exists in solitude within the solar system. This was then followed by Perelandra, which is primarily set on Venus, where humans have just begun to live. Finally, the series ends with The Hideous Strength, a book that features a battle against demons who want to lay waste to Earth. Throughout the books, the old solar system and cosmology are featured, as well as secret languages. Lewis’ Mere Christianity is a series of radio interviews that Lewis gave on Christianity that were published as transcripts. In this book, Lewis attempts to argue for Christian morals. At the time of the interviews, Europe was battling against Hitler and Nazism, and Lewis used Hitler as a point of reference for what the majority of humans would perceive to be morally wrong. The book also tackles the rather controversial topic of how Jesus is depicted in the Bible. Lewis made notes of parts of the Bible where Jesus would apparently claim to be God, and tried to encourage Christians to question why he did this. By invoking heated debates on how Jesus Christ saw himself, Lewis attracted criticism from staunch religious theists. Finally, Lewis's arguments for Christianity placed a certain degree of focus on how Christians should lead their lives, including their approach to marriage, sex and sins such as pride.
