Download or read book Profile of American Youth Demographic Influences on ASVAB Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Opinion Research Center of the University of Chicago administered the Department of Defense enlistment test--the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)--to a national probability sample of approximately 12,000 young men and women between the ages of 16 and 23. This battery of tests, in conjunction with other entry standards, is currently used to select personnel for the Army, Navy, Marine corps, and Air Force, and to assign recruits into appropriate military occupational specialties. It currently consists of ten tests measuring knowledge and skill in the following areas: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, Numerical Operations, Coding Speed, General Science, Mathematic Knowledge, Mechanical Comprehension, Electronics Information, and Auto and Shop Information. The first four tests measure general trainability, and the second six measure more specialized knowledge relevant to technical vocations.

Book Subpopulation Analyses of Current Youth Aptitudes

Download or read book Subpopulation Analyses of Current Youth Aptitudes written by Mark J. Eitelberg and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the subpopulation analyses that will appear in a forthcoming report on the Profile of American Youth. In 1980, the Department of Defense and the Military Services, in cooperation with the Department of Labor, sponsored a large-scale research project to assess the vocational aptitudes of American youth. A national probability sample of approximately 12,000 young men and women, selected from participants in the National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) of Youth Labor Force Behavior, were administered the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The results will be analyzed to identify subgroup differences in test performance. The subgroup variables selected for analysis are age, sex, race/ethnicity, level of education, socioeconomic status, and geographic region. Subgroup comparisons will be made on the basis of Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) scores, ASVAB composite scores, and an estimate of reading ability. The ASVAB scores will also be used to estimate the numbers and percent of 1980 youth population subgroups eligible for military enlistment, based on 1981 Service aptitude standards. (Author).

Book Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery

Download or read book Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is routinely updated in order to replace obsolete items, to take advantage of advances of psychometrics, and to lessen the exposure of the battery to compromise. This paper documents the equating of new versions of the ASVAB Forms 11, 12, and 13 to ASVAB Form 8a, the reference test. The new tests were equated on a new score scale developed from a 1980 sample of American youth ages 18 through 23. The study describes the equating design, the methods used in equating the new forms to the anchor test, the description of issues surrounding the speeded subtests of the ASVAB, and a description of the resolution of the issues. Three equating methods were accomplished and compared for samples of military recruits and applicants. Results of the equatings revealed that a linear conversion table, based on applicants tested in the Military Entranced Processing Stations, would serve for five of the six new tests, and a linear conversion table based on linear equating of military recruits in Recruits Training Centers would be satisfactory for the remaining version. Special studies to adjust scores on the speeded subtests of the ASVAB are described in this paper, and resultant tables are presented.

Book ASVAB Correlations are Lower for Higher Aptitude Groups

Download or read book ASVAB Correlations are Lower for Higher Aptitude Groups written by Peter J. Legree and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Previous research demonstrates that correlations among IQ tests are lower when estimated using higher scoring individuals. However, this phenomenon has only been documented using individually administered measures of intelligence, and attempts to extend the demonstration to other specialized aptitudes have failed. The present study divides the 1980 Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) weighted norming sample into five aptitude levels with similar levels of variance. Analyses show that the ASVAB tests are less correlated within higher aptitude groups provided that the scales used to define the groups are psychometrically sound: for three highly skewed ASVAB tests, a ceiling effect prevents this phenomenon; for the remaining seven tests the phenomenon replicates; and the magnitude of the effect is proportional to the skewness of the scale, r=.85. These findings support the assertion that cognitive aptitudes are less correlated in higher aptitude groups, imply that greater classification effects can be associated with higher scoring groups, and qualify the use of the multivariate correction for restriction of range."--DTIC.

Download or read book Profile of American Youth 1980 Nationwide Administration of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery written by ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (MANPOWER RESERVE AFFAIRS AND LOGISTICS) WASHINGTON DC. and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Military Services, in cooperation with the Department of Labor, sponsored a large-scale research project to assess the vocational aptitudes of American youth. A national probability sample of approximately 12,000 young men and women, selected from participants in the National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) of Youth Labor Force Behavior, were administered the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The young people tested were representative of all youth in the United States, ages 16 through 23 years old. The analyses conducted in the profile study focused upon young people who were 18 through 23 at the time of ASVAB testing. The ASVAB is used by the Military Services to determine eligibility for enlistment and qualification for assignment to specific military jobs.

Book Examining the Impact of ASVAB Renorming Upon Selection and Classification in the Army

Download or read book Examining the Impact of ASVAB Renorming Upon Selection and Classification in the Army written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DOD will implement new norms for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) in July 2004. These norms will reflect the 1997 Youth Population, replacing the 1980 Youth Population norms currently in effect. The purpose of this Study Note is to document the descriptive analyses undertaken to examine the impact of the new norms upon selection and classification in the Army (Regular, Reserve, and Guard). The analyses were conducted with 2002-2003 test data denominated in both 1980 and 1997 scale scores. Under the new norms and existing Army selection standards, and in the absence of newly focused recruiting effort, we would expect some decline in the proportions of Test Score Category (TSC) 1-3A and 3B applicants, and some increase in TSC 4. This holds for all three components. Greater effects are projected for racial-ethnic minorities, and for females to a lesser extent. With regard to classification, small adjustments to cutoff levels for Aptitude Area (AA) scores are recommended to maintain existing percentage qualification rates for Army MOS. The adjustments actually adopted by the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel (0-1) in some instances differ slightly from the ARI recommendations, and the cutoff score recommendations found in this paper do not represent official policy.
