Book Growth and Poverty in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Growth and Poverty in Sub Saharan Africa written by Channing Arndt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the economic growth renaissance in sub-Saharan Africa is widely recognized, much less is known about progress in living conditions. This book comprehensively evaluates trends in living conditions in 16 major sub-Saharan African countries, corresponding to nearly 75% of the total population. A striking diversity of experience emerges. While monetary indicators improved in many countries, others are yet to succeed in channeling the benefits of economic growth into the pockets of the poor. Some countries experienced little economic growth, and saw little material progress for the poor. At the same time, the large majority of countries have made impressive progress in key non-monetary indicators of wellbeing. Overall, the African growth renaissance earns two cheers, but not three. While gains in macroeconomic and political stability are real, they are also fragile. Growth on a per capita basis is much better than in the 1980s and 1990s, yet not rapid compared with other developing regions. Importantly from a pan-African perspective, key economies-particularly Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa-are not among the better performers. Looking forward, realistic expectations are required. The development process is, almost always, a long hard slog. Nevertheless, real and durable factors appear to be at play on the sub-continent with positive implications for growth and poverty reduction in future.

Book D veloppement in galit s pauvret s

Download or read book D veloppement in galit s pauvret s written by Nicola Maria Boccella and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2005 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Dans l'essai introductif Growth and Inegality.

Book Informal Institutions and Citizenship in Rural Africa

Download or read book Informal Institutions and Citizenship in Rural Africa written by Lauren M. MacLean and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-24 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges previous assumptions about institutions, social capital, and the nature of the African state by investigating the history of political and economic change in villages on either side of the Ghana-Cote d'Ivoire border. Prior to European colonial rule, these Akan villages had very similar political and cultural institutions. By the late 1990s, however, Lauren M. MacLean found puzzling differences in the informal institutions of reciprocity and indigenous notions of citizenship. MacLean argues that divergent histories of state formation not only shape how villagers help each other but also influence how local groups and communities define citizenship and then choose to engage with the state on an everyday basis. She examines the historical construction of the state role in mediating risk at the local level across three policy areas: political administration, social service delivery, and agriculture.

Download or read book La pauvret dans une Afrique en essor written by Kathleen Beegle and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: This book provides a glimpse of Aboriginal women in Northern Ontario and it reflects primarily the impact of the European churches and systems on Aboridinal peoples' way of life. The words of the Aboriginal women are gentle, but these words convey the displacement of their way of life in the most powerful way. The power of this book is not only in the stories and history that are told, but also in how all women in Northern Ontario share a respectful life together in a way that I have not witnessed or felt anywhere else. — Susan Hare, Ojibwe lawer, who practices out of the West Bay First Nation, Manitoulin Island.

Book Reinventing Order in the Congo

Download or read book Reinventing Order in the Congo written by Theodore Trefon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinshasa is sub-Saharan Africa's second largest city. The seven million Congolese who live there have a rich reputation for the courageous and innovative ways in which they survive in a harsh urban environment. They have created new social institutions, practices, networks and ways of living to deal with the collapse of public provision and a malfunctioning political system. This book describes how ordinary people, in the absence of formal sector jobs, hustle for a modest living; the famous 'bargaining' system ordinary Kinois have developed; and how they access food, water supplies, health and education. The NGO-ization of service provision is analysed, as is the quite rare incidence of urban riots. The contributors also look at popular discourses, including street rumor, witchcraft, and attitudes to 'big men' such as musicians and preachers. This is urban sociology at its best - richly empirical, unjargonized, descriptive of the lives of ordinary people, and weaving into its analysis how they see and experience life.

Book Poverty Inequality and Rural Development

Download or read book Poverty Inequality and Rural Development written by David Greenaway and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-09-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty alleviation is a major objective of development. More than a fifth of the world's population lives in absolute poverty, and the majority of the poor live in rural areas. This volume studies what can be done for alleviating rural poverty. Four chapters address the measurement of poverty and inequality, including the use of household expenditure surveys and intra-household income distribution. Evidence is presented for India, Mauritania, Cte d'Ivoire and China. Other chapters present case studies on strategies for rural development: provision of rural credit in Bangladesh and India; technical change in Philippine agriculture; contract farming in Thailand; and banana growers in the Windwards. The contributions introduce the problems of rural development and show that effective rural development is assisted by investment in education and secure access to credit; that equity is important for incentives but not directly related to poverty; and that technical and institutional reform are essential, but require careful design and implementation.

Book Position Du CCNTA Sur Les v nements de la Vie Des Femmes A n es

Download or read book Position Du CCNTA Sur Les v nements de la Vie Des Femmes A n es written by National Advisory Council on Aging (Canada) and published by NACA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the six main categories of life-course events and experiences that have the greatest impact on women's senior years. It first looks at the effect of these experiences on women who were born during the first quarter of this century. Based on information about how these experiences are changing, the report then speculates on how the situation of future cohorts of senior women may differ. These experiences include family life, health, living arrangements, education, employment and economic security. The report also includes a subjective dimension illustrating how women see the impact of experiences on their lives, thanks to the informal consultations carried out by Council members. Recommendations addressed to individual women, society in general, governments, community agencies, educational institutions, employers and researchers conclude the paper.
