Book Reading Comprehension Book Two

Download or read book Reading Comprehension Book Two written by Cathy Guth and published by . This book was released on 2021-07 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Comprehension: Book Two, the second book in a 3-book series for middle school students, takes a unique, easy to understand approach to Language Arts instruction. Instead of teaching students to simply label parts of speech or to identify types of phrases and clauses, students are taught how to break sentences into comprehension "chunks." Building on the skills and concepts students practiced in Reading Comprehension: Book One, students continue their study of recognizing the purpose of every chunk of information in a sentence, visualizing sentences as they read, and turning abstract words and concepts into concrete images they can "see." This approach teaches students how to stay focused as they read and students become active, thinking readers. The focus in Reading Comprehension: Book Two shifts from sentence comprehension (Book One) to paragraph and passage comprehension. Students learn how transition words are used to link one chunk of information to another chunk of information and how to determine why the author wrote each paragraph. Using the author's purpose, students are taught how to determine the main idea of the paragraph, how to write clear, concise notes, and how to make inferences and references.Students also learn grammar and punctuation rules, how to write interesting sentences, how to edit their writing to correct errors and add details, ways to remember the meaning of words that look or sound similar, and how to apply test-taking strategies.Teachers effectively teach all the concepts and skills in this series without any extra prep work. Everything a teacher needs to explain to students is printed at the top of each student page. Examples are included in each lesson, making it easy for teachers to model or demonstrate each concept. Directions for activities are always printed on the student pages, eliminating the student excuse of "I didn't know what to do." Reading Comprehension: Book Two can be completed in one quarter, following a pacing schedule that includes 40 student contact days. Teachers choose how best to present each lesson depending on the needs of the students: direct instruction, guided practice, or independent work.

Book excerpt: Reading Comprehension Passages: Level C Reading Comprehension Passages with Text Evidence Questions: Reading Comprehension 1st Grade: This product is designed to help kids who are reading at Guided Reading Level C become skilled at reading simple passages and answering text-based reading comprehension questions. As students find the evidence that supports their answers, they participate in their very first close reading lessons. This pack is ideal for morning work once students are familiar with the format. (Upon request, an abridged version of this product is now also listed in Spanish. If you'd like to take a look, please click here.) This packet includes 30 reading comprehension passages with three reading comprehension questions per passage. Each passage is presented twice. : In the first set, the passages are provided in a standard format. I have students circle the correct answer and also write it on the line. : In the second set, a color-coded crayon is provided in each answer box. Students use that color to underline the evidence in the text that supports their answer & also answer in a standard format. Supports the following Kindergarten and First Grade standards: CCSS ELA-Literacy.RL.1.1 - Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. CCSS ELA-Literacy.RL.K.1 -With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. If multiple choice questions are new to your kids, I recommend putting simple questions in a multiple choice format during calendar time or other daily routines. I like to give each student a strip of cardstock with A, B and C written on it and have them practice answering multiple choice questions by clipping a clothespin on the correct answer. This is an easy, fun way for kids to develop confidence answering multiple choice questions. Once kids are comfortable with the multiple choice format, I like to discuss the first few passages with groups and demonstrate how to answer the simple text-based multiple choice questions. Some of the passages are similar to each other so you can use one passage to teach and the other to check each student's understanding during independent work. I am finding that, with guided practice, reading comprehension exercises, kids quickly develop the skills they need to be successful reading these passages and independently answering the multiple choice questions. These passages are based on common sight words. I also have kids find and highlight selected sight words. Supports the following standards: CCSS ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3g - Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words (for beginning of year words). CCSS ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3c - Read common high-frequency words by sight. Comments & Reviews: "Great resource! After this purchase, I now have purchased Guided Reading Level C, D, E, F, G, & H. I have found these passages to be helpful in many ways. I love how the comprehension questions become harder and require more thinking as the passage levels increase. Thank you for this resource!" "Love these - straightforward, easy to use and no extra words to trip over. Perfect for my favorite kinder!" Many thanks for stopping by and taking a look! Sincerely, Enjoy: ) All Educate School

Book Understanding Reading

Book excerpt: Understanding Reading revolutionized reading research and theory when the first edition appeared in 1971 and continues to be a leader in the field. In the sixth edition of this classic text, Smith's purpose remains the same: to shed light on fundamental aspects of the complex human act of reading--linguistic, physiological, psychological, and social--and on what is involved in learning to read. The text critically examines current theories, instructional practices, and controversies, covering a wide range of disciplines but always remaining accessible to students and classroom teachers. Careful attention is given to the ideological clash that continues between whole language and direct instruction and currently permeates every aspect of theory and research into reading and reading instruction. To aid readers in making up their own minds, each chapter concludes with a brief statement of "Issues." Understanding Reading: A Psycholinguistic Analysis of Reading and Learning to Read, Sixth Edition is designed to serve as a handbook for language arts teachers, a college text for basic courses on the psychology of reading, a guide to relevant research on reading, and an introduction to reading as an aspect of thinking and learning. It is matchless in integrating a wide range of topics relative to reading while, at the same time, being highly readable and user-friendly for instructors, students, and practitioners.
