Logan Bearden makes a unique contribution to the field, presenting a series of flexible strategies, evolving considerations, and best practices that can be taken up, adapted, and implemented by programs and directors that want to achieve what Bearden brands “multimodal curricular transformation,” or MCT, at their own institutions. MCT can be achieved at the intersection of program documents and practices. Bearden details ten composition programs that have undergone MCT, offering interview data from the directors who oversaw and/or participated within the processes. He analyzes a corpus of outcomes statements to discover ways we can “make space” for multimodality and gives instructors and programs a broader understanding of the programmatic values for which they should strive if they wish to make space for multimodal composition in curricula. Making Progress also presents how other program documents like syllabi and program websites can bring those outcomes to life and make multimodal composing a meaningful part of first-year composition curricula. First-year composition programs that do not help their students learn to compose multimodal texts are limiting their rhetorical possibilities. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes how four professional graphic designers use rhetoric in their design processes. While the classical understanding of rhetorical arrangement refers to the ordering of elements within oral discourse, I argue, instead, that arrangement is a creative and guiding tool for making meaning in these graphic design processes. This perspective suggests that arrangement is used horizontally and vertically instead of in a static, linear fashion. Ultimately, I describe how rhetorical arrangement in professional graphic design processes is layered and dimensional -- a rational reconstruction of the classical understanding of arrangement as the organization of the parts of verbal discourse (Schiappa, 1990). An underlying theme of this dissertation is the invisibility of these composing processes and their respective technologies and techniques. Data were collected through research methods designed to capture much of the rhetorical complexities in a set of four professional graphic design processes, including: Pre-interviews to develop a contextual picture of each participant's design approach and background; Think-aloud protocols (multimodal recording with video screen-capture and audio software) to create a trace of each participant's design process, and; Stimulated recall retrospective interviews (using the video screen-capture recording to stimulate responses) for additional context. I analyzed verbal think-aloud protocol data by looking for emergent rhetorical themes with support from video screen capture data and supplementary interviews for context. I then define and describe horizontal and vertical arrangement through multi-dimensional examples supported by verbal and visual think-aloud data. This project is not intended to support broad generalizations about contemporary multimodal and graphic design processes (a kind of multimodal composing). Instead, the purpose is to contribute current descriptive insight into how such practices may occur. In addition, the findings suggest the need for further empirical research on professional graphic design activity and theorizing of rhetorical concepts situated within that activity.

In Toward a Composition Made Whole, Jody Shipka views composition as an act of communication that can be expressed through any number of media and as a path to meaning-making. Her study offers an in-depth examination of multimodality via the processes, values, structures, and semiotic practices people employ every day to compose and communicate their thoughts. Shipka counters current associations that equate multimodality only with computer, digitized, or screen-mediated texts, which are often self-limiting. She stretches the boundaries of composition to include a hybridization of aural, visual, and written forms. Shipka analyzes the work of current scholars in multimodality and combines this with recent writing theory to create her own teaching framework. Among her methods, Shipka employs process-oriented reflection and a statement of goals and choices to prepare students to compose using various media in ways that spur their rhetorical and material awareness. They are encouraged to produce unusual text forms while also learning to understand the composition process as a whole. Shipka presents several case studies of students working in multimodal composition and explains the strategies, tools, and spaces they employ. She then offers methods to critically assess multimodal writing projects. Toward a Composition Made Whole challenges theorists and compositionists to further investigate communication practices and broaden the scope of writing to include all composing methods. While Shipka views writing as crucial to discourse, she challenges us to always consider the various purposes that writing serves.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is a case-study of three instructors and five of their students in first-year composition who were making the transition from print to multimodal composition. This study examines the similarities and differences in the ways instructors and students talk about print and multimodal compositions and if the vocabulary they use to talk about each transfers or if they need a new vocabulary to discuss the multimodal compositions. The results of this study seem to indicate that language common to both print and multimodal composition, such as having a clear assertion, was transferrable both between the print and multimodal projects and between the instructors and their students. This study also indicates that multimodal composition seems to be a good place to focus on composing for a broad audience. Unlike the print text where students had trouble seeing an audience other than the instructor, all of the students interviewed were very clear about the ways their assertions or their presentation choices in the multimodal compositions would affect their audience. Transfer of concepts was a concern with issues of presentation because the instructors and their students had no common vocabulary about the presentation and design issues which surround multimodal composition. For instructors, presentations which did not take advantage of the affordances became "flat" or digital arguments with too much text were "heavy." The students had a "more is better" approach which relied on their intuition to guide them in making presentation decisions. The lack of a language to talk about presentation issues combined with the time the instructors perceived that students spent on the multimodal compositions led to evaluation anxiety for the instructors. All three instructors expressed anxiety about multimodal evaluation that was not present in their evaluation of the print texts. This study both suggests that it is possible to transfer from the rhetorical vocabulary compositionists use to discuss print to multimodal compositions and that we need to work harder to increase these points of transfer.

The chapters view the ways that writing instructors and their students are exploring the spaces where communication occurs, while also asking "what else is possible." The genres of film, audio, photography, graphics, speeches, storyboards, PowerPoint presentations, virtual environments, written works, and others are investigated to discern both their capabilities and limitations. The contributors highlight the responsibility of instructors to guide students in the consideration of their audience and ethical responsibility, while also maintaining the ability to "speak well." Additionally, they focus on the need for programmatic changes and a shift in institutional philosophy to close a possible "digital divide" and remain relevant in digital and global economies. Embracing and advancing multimodal communication is essential to both higher education and students. The contributors therefore call for the examination of how writing programs, faculty, and administrators are responding to change, and how the many purposes writing serves can effectively converge within composition curricula.
