Book Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers 1877 Vol 1

This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, 1877, Vol. 1: Royal Engineer Institute, Occasional Papers This recommendation was adopted at the Corps Meeting, and during the autumn of 1876 three Occasional Papers were published separately in pamphlet form. During this year four pamphlets, each containing four or five papers, have been published, and these are now bound together in the lst volume of the new series. The three papers published in 1876 were not printed uniformly nor paged consecutively, and have therefore not been included in the lat volume, but bound together as an appendix to it. The change of form in the Professional Papers is, it will be seen, principally one of size; and the matter of each volume may be obtained either in pamphlet form, immediately on publication, or bound up, at the end of the year, uniform with the previous volumes of Professional Papers. There is no reason why these Occasional Papers should not be made of very great service to the Corps; but for this end the co operation of every member is necessary; and we trust that during the coming year individual officers, both at home and abroad, and especially in India, will find time to communicate many interesting results of their experiences in carrying on the work upon which they may be employed, or to contribute for the benefit of the Corps at large any use Ful information which they may have acquired in the course of their various duties. It is under the direct control of the Commander-in-Chief (F. S. Regs., I., 5 - 5). Each Balloon Company can put only one captive balloon or set of kites in the air at one time. The constitution as regards aeroplanes and airships is not yet laid down. 8. The Bridging Train is intended to supplement the small amount of rapid bridging equipment allotted to the Field Companies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, 1908-11, Vol. 2 The Royal Engineers Institute Council having decided to issue, for the future, the Professional Papers in pamphlet form only, the present 6 Papers are the last to appear as a Volume. Published first in quarto form, the Professional Papers were started in 1837 on the suggestion Of Lieut. (afterwards Sir W) Denison, re. In 1851 they were altered to Royal Octavo and again in 1877 to Demy Octavo, appearing annually until 1905. In that year the alteration in the form Of the r.e. Journal led to a corresponding change in the Professional Papers which were again henceforth issued in Royal Octavo but in pamphlet form only. It was, however, decided at the time to publish the combined papers in a Volume from time to time for the few Officers who still desired them in that form. This practice is now to be discontinued, and Vol. II. Of the New Series concludes therefore the long list of bound Volumes Of the Royal Engineers Professional Papers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. 30: Royal Engineers Institute, Occasional Papers, 1904 The subject of Convoys is the branch of military instruction which Introduction. Is, perhaps, the most neglected in peace time, because considerations of economy and convenience render it seldom, if ever, practicable to form convoys for the supply of troops Operating at manoeuvres. In the first place the forces engaged are in the field for such a short time during peace operations, and the area is so limited, that it is not necessary to organize transport on the scale demanded by an army in war; and in the second place, manoeuvres take place in populated countries, in which the conditions of fighting are very different from those which Obtain in the regions in which most of our wars are carried on. But it is precisely for the reason that our wars are usually waged in inhospitable countries that the question of the transport of supplies in war acquires additional importance. In civilized countries 'convoys, following in rear of great armies to provide for their supplies Of food and munitions of war, are merely baggage columns covered by the broad extension of the forces which they follow, and are seldom subject to other molestation than that of small marauding bands or of hostile inhabitants.
