Book Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers 1901 Vol 27

Download or read book Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers 1901 Vol 27 written by R. F. Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers; 1901, Vol. 27: Royal Engineers Institute Occasional Papers IT may be thought that the title I have chosen is too comprehensive, and that it is impossible within the space of one, or perhaps two, lectures to even glance at the multifarious subjects included under the head of civil engineering. To this I reply that it is not my in tention to deal with any one of these subjects in detail, and we shall, indeed, be able to do little more in the time allotted than consider the general question of the stability of structures. But in doing this I hope to be able to establish the value of the polar diagram, and to show that anyone who possesses an adequate acquaintance with its varied applications possesses an instrument of extensive use for the general solution of civil engineering problems. Graphic methods have, within quite recent years, become much developed, and attained to an importance such as was never before contemplated. They appeal to the eye, and are intelligible to the ordinary intellect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, 1908-11, Vol. 2 The Royal Engineers Institute Council having decided to issue, for the future, the Professional Papers in pamphlet form only, the present 6 Papers are the last to appear as a Volume. Published first in quarto form, the Professional Papers were started in 1837 on the suggestion Of Lieut. (afterwards Sir W) Denison, re. In 1851 they were altered to Royal Octavo and again in 1877 to Demy Octavo, appearing annually until 1905. In that year the alteration in the form Of the r.e. Journal led to a corresponding change in the Professional Papers which were again henceforth issued in Royal Octavo but in pamphlet form only. It was, however, decided at the time to publish the combined papers in a Volume from time to time for the few Officers who still desired them in that form. This practice is now to be discontinued, and Vol. II. Of the New Series concludes therefore the long list of bound Volumes Of the Royal Engineers Professional Papers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Papers of the Corps of Royal Engineers, 1878, Vol. 2: Royal Engineer Institute Occasional Papers It will doubtless be noticed, that while the present volume contains a great deal of interesting matter connected with the primary duties of the Corps - its military duties, there is an absence of information on points of construction and civil engineering, which, considering the very large number of officers employed in India on the public works, and the importance of the works executed, not only in India and the Colonies, but also at home by Engineer Officers, is much to be regretted. Download or read book The Boer War written by Fred R. van Hartesveldt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-05-30 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one. Historiographical questions concerning the Boer War are numerous. Discussions of military operations focus on the early use of modern weaponry and the effect of guerrilla tactics on a traditional force, while other historians debate the question of British military leadership and organization. Questions also revolve around British imperialism and the scramble for Africa. Frequently called the second war for freedom by South African authors, the war was the reason that South Africa, unlike other British colonies, gained independence without majority rule. This makes the war of continuing relevance to the turmoil in South Africa, the collapse of the minority government, and the continuing problems of the current government. This book will provide a useful tool for those wishing to research the war.

This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Professional Papers by the Corps of Royal Engineers, Vol. 17: Royal Engineers Institute, Occasional Papers, 1891 Tm; present volume of the Occasional Papers, No. XVII., for 1 891, contains only one paper, but recent enquiries into the sanitary condition of some of our existing barracks have shown, if indeed were proof necessary of the fact, that Sanitary Engineer ing merits a place second to none among the many duties that fall to the lot of a Royal Engineer. The sanitation of our barracks does not present a field for reaping renown, but it cannot be denied that on it depends in great measure the health of our tr00ps in peace, and their consequent efficiency for war, and we feel sure that the officers of the Corps will fully appreciate the care and trouble Major Moore has taken in the compilation of his paper at a time, too, when he is occupied in the onerous duties of an Instructor at the School of Military Engineering. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engines for Empire examines the use of the railway by the British army from the 1830s to 1914, a period of domestic political strife and unprecedented imperial expansion. The book uses a wide array of sources and images to demonstrate how the Victorian army embraced this new technology, how it monitored foreign wars, and how it came to use the railway in both support and operational roles. The British army's innovation is also revealed, through its design and use of armoured trains, the restructuring of hospital trains, and in its capacity to build and repair railway track, bridges, and signals under field conditions. This volume provides insights on the role of railways in imperial development, as a focus of social interaction between adversaries, and as a means of projecting imperial power. It will make fascinating reading for students, academics and enthusiasts in military and imperial history, Victorian studies, railway history and colonial warfare.
