To this I reply that it is not my in tention to deal with any one of these subjects in detail, and we shall, indeed, be able to do little more in the time allotted than consider the general question of the stability of structures. But in doing this I hope to be able to establish the value of the polar diagram, and to show that anyone who possesses an adequate acquaintance with its varied applications possesses an instrument of extensive use for the general solution of civil engineering problems. Graphic methods have, within quite recent years, become much developed, and attained to an importance such as was never before contemplated.
