Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook surveys the history, organization, role, major issues, and future outlook for different segments of the mass media industry and for its various audiences in the United States. Bibliographies defining important readings as well as regular sources of information add to the usefulness of this handbook for college, university, institutional, and public libraries. Each chapter on a different sector or audience reviews and synthesizes the important literature to date, discusses current responsibilities, evaluates the sector's effectiveness or weaknesses, audience concerns, and advises about trends and future developments. Book Applied Mass Communication Theory

Download or read book Applied Mass Communication Theory written by Jack Rosenberry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Mass Communication Theory: A Guide for Media Practitioners, Second Edition bridges a review of theory to the contemporary work of media professionals. The text provides a framework for constructing an undergraduate research project. It also presents vital chronological information on the progression of theory in mass communication, including a model that integrates mass communication theories and shows how they relate to one another. It concludes with information on media law, ethics, economics, and mass media careers, establishing a critical framework for students as they leave college and begin their first jobs. This Second Edition discusses mass communication theory and its applications in both traditional print and broadcast applications. By exploring advertising and public relations in this new digital multi-media environment, this text remains relevant, and in fact necessary, for students in the field.

Book The Not So Special Interests

Download or read book The Not So Special Interests written by Matt Grossmann and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lobbyist" tends to be used as a dirty word in politics. Indeed, during the 2008 presidential primary campaign, Hillary Clinton was derided for even suggesting that some lobbyists represent "real Americans." But although many popular commentators position interest groups as representatives of special—not "public"—interests, much organized advocacy is designed to advance public interests and ideas. Advocacy organizations—more than 1,600 of them—are now an important component of national political institutions. This book uses original data to explain why certain public groups, such as Jews, lawyers, and gun-owners, develop substantially more representation than others, and why certain organizations become the presumed spokespersons for these groups in government and media. In contrast to established theory and conventional wisdom, this book demonstrates that groups of all sizes and types generate advocates to speak on their behalf, though with varying levels of success. Matt Grossmann finds that the advantages of organized representation accrue to those public groups that are the most politically motivated and involved in their communities. Organizations that mobilize members and create a long-lasting presence in Washington become, in the minds of policymakers and reporters, the taken-for-granted surrogates for these public groups. In the face of perennial debates about the relative power of the people and the special interests, Grossmann offers an informed and nuanced view of the role of organizations in public representation and American governance.

Book The European Handbook of Media Accountability

Download or read book The European Handbook of Media Accountability written by Tobias Eberwein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the Leveson Inquiry in Great Britain, as well as the EU High-Level Group on Media Freedom and Pluralism, have stirred heated debates about media accountability and media self-regulation across Europe. How responsible are journalists? How well-developed are infrastructures of media self-regulation in the different European countries? How much commitment to media accountability is there in the media industry – and how actively do media users become involved in the process of media criticism via social media? With contributions from leading scholars in the field of journalism and mass communication, this handbook brings together reports on the status quo of media accountability in all EU members states as well as key countries close to Europe, such as Turkey and Israel. Each chapter provides an up-to-date overview of media accountability structures as well as a synopsis of relevant research, exploring the role of media accountability instruments in each national setting, including both media self-regulation (such as codes of ethics, press councils, ombudspersons) and new instruments that involve audiences and stakeholder groups (such as media blogs and user comment systems). A theoretically informed, cross-national comparative analysis of the state of media accountability in contemporary Europe, this handbook constitutes an invaluable basis for further research and policy-making and will appeal to students and scholars of media studies and journalism, as well as policy-makers and practitioners.
