This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the eleventh quarter of the project, new flowmeters were replaced in the reaction system and calibrated to control the flowrate of HS, CO2, H2 and N2. The experimental results from quartz tube reactor were summarized in tabular form. The results showed that H2S conversion increased with increasing temperature from 500 to 600°C when used with the CoO-MoO3-Alumina catalyst. Bench scale experiments were set and performed to further investigate the adsorption ability of activated carbon which was the best of four adsorbents tested last quarter. At the same time, several designs of activated carbon feed system were tested. Under both an inert and a real reaction environment, bench scale experiments were performed to investigate the characteristics and efficiency of activated carbon passing through the CoO-MoO3-Alumina catalyst bed. The results showed that activated carbon powder could easily be transported through the catalytic bed. The adsorption process may be applicable to promote conversion of H2S in the H2S and CO2 reaction system.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annual report summarizes the results of the project during the third year period. The purpose of this study was to develop an experimental and theoretical procedure to investigate the feasibility of producing elemental sulfur, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and possibly methane from hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide through catalytic reactions. A standard experimental system that can evaluate potential catalysts under controlled laboratory conditions has been designed and constructed. And an effective simulation program capable of providing valuable thermodynamic information on the reaction system has been compiled. During this project year, the modified experimental system for the catalytic reaction studies was installed and the temperature distribution profile inside the reactor has been characterized. New flowmeters were replaced in the reaction system and calibrated to control the flowrates of H2S, CO2, H2 and N2. Based on the experimental results of H2S decomposition under both non-catalytic and catalytic conditions, bench scale experiments were performed with the CoO-MoO3-Alumina catalyst at moderate temperatures, around 550 C, to investigate the adsorption effects using solid sorbents within a sulfur vapor environment. Four kinds of adsorbents have been tested. In addition to the above baseline tests, several designs of solid adsorbent feed system have been tested. Under both an inert and a real reaction environment, bench scale experiments were performed to investigate the characteristics and efficiency of activated carbon passing through the CoO-MoO3-Alumina catalyst bed.

Book excerpt: This study is to develop an experimental and theoretical procedure to investigate the feasibility of producing elemental sulfur, CO, H2 and possibly CH4 from H2S and CO2 through catalytic reactions. A standard experimental system that can evaluate potential catalysts under controlled laboratory conditions has been designed and constructed. An effective simulation program capable of providing valuable thermodynamic information of the reaction system has been compiled. Based on the experimental decomposition of H2S under both non-catalytic and catalytic conditions with the CoO-MoO3-alumina catalyst at moderate temperatures, around 550 C, further thermodynamic analyses of the theoretical conversion of H2S for various temperatures, pressures and ratios of H2S to CO2 were performed. A multistage reaction system was also considered. Results are presented. 47 refs., 51 figs., 7 tabs.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the seventh quarter of the project, further simulations were performed to investigate the feasibility of producing elemental sulfur and methane from hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide by using the overall reaction of H[sub 2]S and CO[sub 2] based on the following stoichiometry: 4H[sub 2]S+ CO[sub 2][l-equilibrium] 2S[sub 2]+ CH[sub 4]+ 2H[sub 2]O. The results indicate that the number of stages needed to reach the final system equilibrium for recovering sulfur can be greatly affected by the factor of sulfur vapor pressure. Sulfur vapor pressure versus the system temperature follows a logarithmic relationship. The H[sub 2]S conversion and sulfur yield do not increase proportionally with the number of stages. The simulation indicates that a multiple stage system is more effective at a high reaction temperature range in raising the H[sub 2]S conversion and sulfur yield.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the sixth quarter of the project, simulations were carried out to investigate the feasibility of producing elemental sulfur and methane from hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide by using the overall reaction of H[sub 2]S and CO[sub 2] based on the following equation: 4 H[sub 2]S+ CO[sub 2][l-equilibrium] 2 S[sub 2]+ CH[sub 4]+2 H[sub 2]O. The results indicate that two reaction zones are required to realize the above reaction. The first reaction zone should be composed of multiple stages to recover the elemental sulfur without the equilibrium limitations. With optimum temperatures in each zone, the conversion can be increased significantly. The simulation also indicates less amounts of by-products, such as COS, CS[sub 2] and SO[sub 2]. The limitation on the extraction of sulfur is directly related to the sulfur vapor pressure.

Book excerpt: During the third quarter of this project, by using the apparatus previously setup for preparation of catalysts, the CoO-MoO3-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared and the thermal stability of the catalyst was tested. Efforts were made on the calibration and the programming of the two column GC of a Perkin Elmer Gas Chromatograph. Column A was used for detecting sulfur related substances such as H2S, COS and CS2, and column B was for CO, CH4 and H2. All of the GC standard curves were obtained. Non-catalytic experiments were carried out by using the packed bed reactor system with blank, filled only with quartz wool and Al2O3 support for future reference. A modified new reactor was designed to quickly quench the reaction and to prohibit the occurrence of re-equilibration of reaction products. Further thermodynamic analyses for the reaction of H2S and CO, were performed using the Stanjan method.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second quarter of the project, an experimental apparatus was setup for catalyst screening studies. Sulfided Co-Mo-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared and a thermodynamic study for the reaction of H2S and CO2 was performed. A packed bed reactor made of quartz tube was setup for catalyst screening studies. This reactor was also used for the H2 reduction of catalyst. Temperature profile in the reactor was measured and results indicated that in the middle of the reactor (5 to 6 inches in length) the temperature profile may be regarded as isothermal. Sulfided Co-Mo catalyst was prepared by first reducing (using H2) and sulfiding (using H2S) a commercially available CoO-MoO3-Al2O3 catalyst. Thermodynamic analysis for the reaction of H2S and CO2 was performed by using the JANAF thermochemic table and the STANJAN method. The results indicated that the following reaction mechanism might be suitable for the reaction of H2S and CO2 to produce elemental sulfur and methane: (1) 2H2S = 2H2+S2, (2) CO2+H2=CO+H2O, (3) CO2+4H2=CH4+2H2O, and (4) CO+3H2=CH4+2H2O.
