Book excerpt: Accelerating processes of economic globalization have fundamentally reshaped the organization of the global economy towards much greater integration and functional interdependence through cross-border economic activity. In this interconnected world system, a new form of economic organization has emerged: Global Production Networks (GPNs). This brings together a wide array of economic actors, most notably capitalist firms, state institutions, labour unions, consumers and non-government organizations, in the transnational production of economic value. National and sub-national economic development in this highly interdependent global economy can no longer be conceived of, and understood within, the distinct territorial boundaries of individual countries and regions. Instead, global production networks are organizational platforms through which actors in these different national or regional economies compete and cooperate for a larger share of the creation, transformation, and capture of value through transnational economic activity. They are also vehicles for transferring the value captured between different places. This book ultimately aims to develop a theory of global production networks that explains economic development in the interconnected global economy. While primarily theoretical in nature, it is well grounded in cutting-edge empirical work in the parallel and highly impactful strands of social science literature on the changing organization of the global economy relating to global commodity chains (GCC), global value chains (GVC), and global production networks (GPN).

Book excerpt: This dissertation was motivated by the changing nature and structure of interregional trade within a country. Each region0́9s economic structural changes and new spatial organization of production generated by the fragmented production process made possible by an open economy with significantly lower transportation costs have resulted in complex and changing patterns of interregional trade. For this reason, more attention has been directed to the relationship between trade and spatial economic interdependence across diverse regions. Such changes in the interregional or interstate trade pattern have raised several questions as follows: where are the main sources of inputs and markets for each region and how have they changed over time?; to what extent is interregional trade beneficial to the regions?; and what, if any, related public policies might be considered to enhance the region0́9s economic well being? This dissertation comprises three main essays to explore the U.S. interregional trade and regional economic structure in order to seek for the answers to the research questions presented above. The focus is three aspects: (1) the spatial pattern of the U.S. interstate commodity flows, (2) the role of interregional trade in the U.S. economy, and (3) spatial economic interdependence in the U.S. regional economy. The first analysis explores the spatial or geographical patterns of U.S. interstate commodity flows by employing two main exploratory spatial data analyses using U.S. CFS data. The analyses reveals trends that highlight the expanding interregional trading regions for each U.S. state between 1993 and 2007 even though there is significant spatial and temporal stability in the interstate commodity flow patterns. The second analysis focuses on investigating the role of interregional trade in regional economic growth. In order to assess the interregional trade coefficient change effects to the changes in the regional output level, a regional output decomposition method is introduced. The decomposition method is based on the interregional input-output model, and separates the interregional input-output coefficients for the intermediate transaction into pure technical coefficient and interregional trade coefficients. This decomposition approach highlights the significant role of trade among regions in generating and distributing the regional output across the regions. The final analysis explores the spatial economic interdependence among regions within an interregional economic system. The hypothetical extraction methods are applied to reveal that there is a clear hierarchical spatial linkage among regions. This dissertation provides the basis for understanding the relationship between interregional trade and spatial economic interdependence within the entire U.S. regional economy. It presents the changing structure of interregional trade and detects the significance of interregional trade. More regional 0́−spillover0́+ effects through the interregional interaction could be expected over time and the increasing interregional or interstate trade will continue to enhance each region0́9s complementarity as well change the nature of its competitiveness. There is a clear implication for the importance of transportation infrastructure investment in developing and promoting the growth and development of the entire regional economy. Future assessment of the regional economic impact of transportation infrastructure development would require the creation of an integrated model linking interregional input-output systems with a transportation network model. Given concerns about climate change and the environmental implications of future development, such a model would be able to explore the nature and extent of negative externalities associated with the growth of interregional trade as well as the implications for energy demands to move greater volumes of goods and services over longer distances.

The concept often appears in the evolution of knowledge, either as a basis of theory or as a factor in research. It is associated, more or less directly, with all the history of scientific thought. At the level of simple common sense, the importance of the concept of space is only equaled by its lack of precision. It was part of legend before becoming part of history. To indicate the founding of Rome, Romulus started by drawing the boundaries, locating its landmarks in a discontinuous space after having cut the limits of a continuous space. However, neither geographical explorations nor mathematico-logical speculations have ever completely removed the mystery from the concept of space. For all its simple common sense, its mystique remains intact. The privileged position occupied by the concept of space in the history of science and the vagueness of its meaning in the current use of the term, far from constituting a paradox, are mutually explanatory. Every concept of space is necessarily the result of an abstraction, whether the process by which it is reached is through mathematics, psychology, biology, or any other discipline. At the level of common knowledge, the space-time concept is the base upon which are arranged individual experiences. It is thus easy to understand how the concept of space can be understood only through an orderly arrangement of these experiences and their integration into a logical scheme.

Geographical space is one of the playgrounds for complex dynamics, as is witnessed by population movements, transport ?ows, retail developments, urban expansion, lowland ?ooding and so forth. All such dynamic phenomena have one feature in common: the low predictability of uncertain interrelated events occurring at different interconnected spatio-temporal scale levels and often originating from different disciplinary backgrounds. The study of the associated non-linear (fast and slow) dynamic transition paths calls for a joint research effort of scientists from different disciplines in order to understand the nature, the roots and the con- quences of unexpected or unpredictable changes in complex spatial systems.
