Book excerpt: Excerpt from Production, Consumption, and Trade of Coarse Grains: Developments and Prospects for Selected Foreign Countries and Areas Total world grain production advanced to nearly billion tons in 1967 after exceeding the 1 - billion-ton mark first in 1966 (table Coarse grains account for almost half of total world grain output, with the remaining pro duction about equally split between wheat and rice. World production of rye and oats has declined, while output of barley, corn, and millet and sorghum has increased. Rye output declined percent and oats percent annually be tween 1955-57 and 1965-67. Average annual percentage increases for other grains were: barley, percent; corn, percent; millet and sorghum, percent These trends brought the overall average annual increase in coarse grain output to percent between 1955-57 and 1965-67-below the increase for wheat percent) but above that of rice percent) Rye accounted for only percent of total coarse grain output in 1965-67 million tons) and its relative importance continues to decline. The So viet Union, Eastern Europe, and the eec (principally West Germany) jointly pro duce over 88 percent of the rye crop (table. Although rye production fell in all three of these countries or areas during the 10-year period 1955-57 to 1965-67, the major decline was in the eec percent annually). Three of the major producing areas expanded production during the decade, but the largest percentage increase occurred in Canada. Although rye is considered a coarse grain in this study, a substantial pro portion of production is consumed as food. This is especially true in the major producing areas-ussr, Eastern Europe, and west Germany-where large amounts of rye are used in bread baking. However, rising levels of living are reducing the demand for rye as a food grain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book International Trade in Bread and Coarse Grains

Download or read book International Trade in Bread and Coarse Grains written by United States Department Of Agriculture and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Trade in Bread and Coarse Grains: World Exports by Countries of Origin and Destination The world's annual export movement of bread and coarse grains from surplus to deficit producing countries has been an outstanding feature of international trade down through the centuries. The grains under reference are wheat, rye, corn, oats, barley and grain sorghums. Production for export has now reached such proportions that competition for export outlets is keener today than at any time in history. This bulletin reveals the actual levels of such competition during each of the five years ending with 1955-56 compared with the quantities moved into export channels in earlier years, running back to 1909-13. A large part of the human race depends on bread and coarse grains for the bulk of its food intake, consuming them either directly in the form of porridge, bread and other baked products and beverages, or indirectly in the form of livestock and meat products. While no one grain is used exclusively for one single purpose, wheat and rye are used mainly for human food and corn, oats, barley and grain sorghums mainly for feeding livestock. Approximately billion out of the billion acres of arable land in the world are devoted to the pro duction of bread and coarse grains. Production and marketing of these grains constitutes an important part of the agricultural economy of every country in the world. Every month of the year, in some farming area or another, a golden harvest of these grains is moving to market. Millions of farmers throughout the world depend upon them as the main source of their income. Yet there is no one country where production and consumption are so nicely balanced that the country con cerned does not either have to import or to export some of these grains. In fact, no single group of commodities plays a more important role in international political and economic relations generally. The share of the world's annual production moving into export channels ranges between 15 and 17 percent for wheat, around 10 percent for barley, and 3 percent for corn. For rye, oats and grain sorghums, the export share is less than 3 percent, these being largely stay-at-home crops. Book North South Grain Markets And Trade Policies

Download or read book North South Grain Markets And Trade Policies written by David Blandford and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is composed of a series of case studies. The countries included reflect the interest and experience of the authors who collaborated in preparing the volume. No attempt was made to provide representative coverage based upon a comprehensive classiftcation of countries, which is why there are no chapters dealing with such exporters as Argentina or Thailand or importers such as Egypt or Japan. Despite the somewhat eclectic geographical mix, many of the fundamental issues that face the North and the South, both individually and collectively, are illustrated by the case countries. We would argue that there is much to be learned about the effective implementation of policy choices and the constraints that policymakers face by looking at individual country experiences, rather than by attempting to generalize on the basis of an abstract theoretical framework There is a dearth of information on what countries actually do in managing domestic grain markets.
