Book Production and Marketing of Spices in Ethiopia

Download or read book Production and Marketing of Spices in Ethiopia written by Jemal Mumede and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Market research, Haramaya University, language: English, abstract: This paper is about the production and marketing of spices in Ethiopia. The following objectives of the review are: 1. The major challenges and opportunities in spice production and marketing in Ethiopia for end users. 2. Identifying the major marketing channels of spices. 3. Discussing the factors affecting the growth and yield of spices. The term spice refers to any dried plant product used primarily for seasoning, be it the seed, leaves, bark/peel, or flowers. Spices are essential oils that give foods and beverages flavor, aroma, and sometimes color. They can be marketed whole, ground to a powder or in the form of essential oils and oleoresins. Many spices are also used for other purposes. Plants such as turmeric/erid (Curcuma longa) are increasingly in demand for natural therapies, while others such as peppers (Capsicum spp.) serve as substitutes for chemical dyes or pesticides. Another definition indicates: spice is a dried seed, fruit, root, bark, or vegetative substance used in nutritionally insignificant quantities as a food additive for the purpose of flavoring, and sometimes as a preservative by killing or preventing the growth of harmful bacteria. Many of these substances are also used for other purposes such as medicine, religious rituals, cosmetics, perfumery, appetite, or eating as vegetables. For example, turmeric is also used as a preservative; licorice as a medicine; garlic as a vegetable and nutmeg as a recreational drug. Marketing is the process of bringing sellers and buyers together for the purpose of exchanging title to goods and services. According to Kotler, marketing is defined as a social and a managerial process whereby individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and value with others. The American Marketing Association representing marketing professionals in the US and Canada states that marketing is the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives.

Book Importance of Ginger in Ethiopia

Download or read book Importance of Ginger in Ethiopia written by Asfaw Kifile and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ginger is one of the most widely used spices as a flavouring agent around the world. It is also an important crop in Ethiopia in terms of production, local consumption, and export, owing to the availability of favourable climatic and edaphic conditions and a long tradition of production. Ginger production, however, is limited to a few pockets in southern Ethiopia and a few areas in southwestern Oromia and north Amhara despite the country’s huge potential for ginger production. In recent years, after the ginger bacterial wilt pandemic, production and export were hampered, seriously limiting its economic contribution at household and economy-wide. To resolve the problems, research and development efforts have been made. However, the adoption and implementation of the recommended practices are very limited. This working paper presents a general overview of ginger production and marketing, prevailing challenges, and recommended interventions to revitalize ginger production and marketing.

Book The coffee production and marketing in Ethiopia An analysis of challenges and opportunities

Download or read book The coffee production and marketing in Ethiopia An analysis of challenges and opportunities written by Abrham Gebreselassie and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 5 (Excellent), Szent István University (Institute of Regional Economics and Rural Development), course: Rural Development and Agribusiness, language: English, abstract: The general objective of this paper is to analyze the trends of coffee sector in Ethiopia in general. Furthermore it wants to generate baseline information on production and marketing systems of the selected study area in particular by concentrating on parameters like production, marketing, institutional and organizational support and challenges and opportunities. Currently, Ethiopia contributes 3.6 percent of the total value and 3 percent of the total quantity of coffee traded to the global market, which leads the country to be the 10th largest exporter of coffee in the world and the first exporter in Africa. 40% of the total coffee production of Ethiopia is exported, which earns 33% of the overall value of agricultural goods exported and 24% of the whole export value of the country. Over one-third of the population living in the rural areas and over 15 million populations sustain their livelihoods and participated in coffee production. There are around one million coffee growers in the country. Coffee has been an important commodity which has got greater attention by the government of Ethiopia. It is the first cash crop that the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) started trading operations in April 2008 in order to advance coffee markets in the country. High costs and high risks of transaction were the features of agricultural markets in Ethiopia before 2008, with only one third of the production reaching the market. Besides, smallholder farmers have little information about the market which limits them to sell their final products at the nearby market, deal with good prices as well as minimizing their market risk. Coffee market incompetence chiefly affect the income of coffee farmers and discourage them in the process of coffee production and marketing which lead to a significantly decreases in the country’s foreign exchange. This suggests that it is very critical to study and monitor systematically the production and marketing systems in all coffee growing areas of the country for the sake of planning and designing suitable research and development interventions that are applicable to the specific systems.

Between 2000 and 2021, 74% of the growth in overall crop production on the continent was derived from increases in land area expansion, while increases in yield contributed only 26% of the growth. This unchecked expansion of land use puts the sustainability of the natural resource base under severe pressure. This book draws on a unique set of case studies from Ethiopia described and told from a truly African perspective.
