Book Pioneers of Industrial Organization

Download or read book Pioneers of Industrial Organization written by H. W. de Jong and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . this collection should be viewed as a pioneering effort. . . this book would most likely serve as a useful quick reference source for students of industrial economics. It can also serve as a valuable point of departure for those who wish to study intellectual developments in a major field in more detail. John Howard Brown, Journal of the History of Economic Thought This work will be indispensable for anyone who undertakes serious scholarly research in industrial organization. With its knowledgeable authors and editors, this book offers us valuable materials, about the work of writers long forgotten and others inadequately recognized, that can contribute much to understanding in the field. William J. Baumol, New York University and Princeton University, US This encyclopaedic work celebrates the scores of leading pioneers who created the modern economic field of industrial organization, at the heart of which lie competition and monopoly, the two great forces that drive modern markets. Their pioneering work has shaped the field s growing research as well as the past, present and future debates in Europe and America over several centuries. This landmark book includes authoritative entries on all the major figures in both Europe and North America. Pioneers of Industrial Organization also reveals how public policies such as antitrust and regulation and deregulation since the 1970s can promote, or impede economic results and progress. Readers will find the intellectual pioneers, the theories and policies, and the debates, in all their variety herein. Some pioneers have been free-market advocates, others have been more protective of popular values, but all have strained to make the economic engine promote more wealth, progress and fairness. This book presents the people, ideas and debates with careful neutrality, and also with clear, concise writing. For all those interested in modern economic progress and its problems, this book provides deep insight as well as great personal colour. It will be an essential source of reference for students, researchers and professors of economics, as well as those concerned with the historical foundations or the conceptual and thematic developments in industrial organization.

Book Oligopoly Theory

Download or read book Oligopoly Theory written by James Friedman and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1983-09-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Friedman provides a thorough survey of oligopoly theory using numerical examples and careful verbal explanations to make the ideas clear and accessible. While the earlier ideas of Cournot, Hotelling, and Chamberlin are presented, the larger part of the book is devoted to the modern work on oligopoly that has resulted from the application of dynamic techniques and game theory to this area of economics. The book begins with static oligopoly theory. Cournot's model and its more recent elaborations are covered in the first substantive chapter. Then the Chamberlinian analysis of product differentiation, spatial competition, and characteristics space is set out. The subsequent chapters on modern work deal with reaction functions, advertising, oligopoly with capital, entry, and oligopoly using noncooperative game theory. A large bibliography is provided.

Book Industrial Production Models

Download or read book Industrial Production Models written by Sven Dano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of many years' interest in the economic theory of pro duction, first aroused by the reading of Professor ERICH SCHNEIDER'S classic Theorie der Produktion. A grant from the Danish-Norwegian Foundation made it possible for me to spend six months at the Institute of Economics, University of Oslo, where I became acquainted with Professor RAGNAR FRISCH'S penetrating pioneer works in this field and where the plan of writing the present book was conceived. Further studies as a Rockefeller fellow at several American univer sities, especially an eight months' stay at the Harvard Economic Research Pro ject, and a visit to the Unione Industriale di Torino have given valuable impulses. For these generous grants, and for the help and advice given by the various institutions I have visited, I am profoundly grateful. My sincere thanks are also due to the University of Copenhagen for the ex ceptionally favourable working conditions which I have enjoyed there, and to the Institute of Economics-especially its director, Professor P. N0RREGAARD RASMUSsEN-for patient and encouraging interest in my work. I also wish to thank the Institute's office staff, Miss G. SUENSON and Mrs. G. STEN0R, for their constant helpfulness, and Mrs. E. HAUGEBO for her efficient work in preparing the manuscript, which was completed in the spring of 1965.

Book New Perspectives on Retailing and Store Patronage Behavior

Download or read book New Perspectives on Retailing and Store Patronage Behavior written by Torben Hansen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retailing and consumer patronage behavior constitute fascinating research areas within the field of marketing. Retailing contributes to an increasing proportion of gross national products and employment but is, however, also faced with problems and opportunities like increased product complexity, rapidly changing consumer expectations, and the introduction of new technologies. Also, consumers are facing markets of increasingly complexity when making decisions on how to conduct their behavior, primarily as a result of new technologies, shorter products life cycles in general, and higher complexity of products and services. In this book, we present and deal with various topics in relation to retailing and consumer patronage behavior. Together, these topics involve different problem settings and draw on different theories, models and statistical techniques. However, it is common to all the results presented in the following chapters (with the exception of chapter II) that they, in total or in part, rest on a major survey, which was conducted by the authors in 1999. Our now retired colleague, Hans Engstrøm participated in preparing this survey and did a great job in providing research ideas. For this, and for many stimulating discussions, we are highly grateful.
