Book excerpt: The Parable of the Prodigal Son is a gospel story: in it we see the fall, repentance, redemption, and reconciliation. Many of us have heard this parable our whole lives. Often the Prodigal Story is portrayed as one that pictures the process of Christian salvation...and this is true. It is also true that believers, though adopted into God's family, are prone to wander back to the Pigsty, time and time again. We can find ourselves, much like the sons in the story, squandering relationship with Our Heavenly Father and feeling the pain of separation from Him. The path back to the Father via repentance is a short one, and should be taken on a regular basis. This book explores why Christians, given so much hope, love, and grace, continue to struggle with sin. Like the Gospel Story, each Prodigal's story is filled with hope and grace. God is purposeful. Our struggles are part of the process of leaving behind the old ways and learning to live new lives; it is a process that we cannot fast forward through...this is our refining, our sanctification. God uses our stories for the display of His glory: to demonstrate His power over sin, His wisdom in ordaining our life events, and His unfailing goodness toward us. The Parable of the Prodigal Son is meant to display the Father's character. Our lives are meant to reflect the same truths. Prodigal means extravagant. In our struggles, we can be extravagantly wasteful of God's gift to us of relationship with Him. But the hope of the Christian life is that He doesn't let us stay there. His compassion is active. He meets us on our way back to Him. As we learned more and more to walk in obedience, we are able to share His extravagant generosity with others.

  • Author : Jared C. Wilson
  • Publisher : Crossway

Download or read book The Prodigal Church written by Jared C. Wilson and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastors want to reach the lost with the good news of Jesus. However, we've too often assumed this requires loud music, flashy lights, and skinny jeans. In this gentle manifesto, Jared Wilson—a pastor who knows what it's like to serve in a large attractional church—challenges pastors to reconsider their priorities when it comes to how they "do church" and reach people in their communities. Writing with the grace and kindness of a trusted friend, Wilson encourages pastors to reexamine the Bible's teaching, not simply return to a traditional model for tradition's sake. He then sets forth an alternative to both the attractional and the traditional models: an explicitly biblical approach that is gospel focused, grace based, and fruit oriented.

Book The Confessions of Saint Augustine

Download or read book The Confessions of Saint Augustine written by Saint Augustine and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1997-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Confessions, Saint Augustine addressed himself eloquently and passionately to the enduring spiritual questions that have stirred the minds and hearts of thoughtful men since time began. Written A.D. 397, The Confessions are a history of the young Augustine's fierce struggle to overcome his profligate ways and achieve a life of spiritual grace. The first ten books of the work relate the story of Augustine's childhood in Numidia; his licentious and riotous youth and early manhood in Carthage, Rome, and Milan; his continuous struggle with evil; his attempts to find an anchor for his faith among the Manicheans and the Neoplatonists; the untiring efforts of his mother, Saint Monnica, to save him from self-destruction; and his ultimate conversion to the Christian faith at the age of thirty-two. The last three books of The Confessions, unrelated to the preceding account of Saint Augustine's early life, are an allegorical explanation of the Mosaic account of Creation. Throughout the work, the narrative, addressed to God, is intersperse with prayers, meditations, and instructions, many of which today are to be found in the liturgies of all sects of the Christian Church. The Confessions constitute perhaps the most moving diary ever recorded of a soul's journey to grace. Appearing midway in Saint Augustine's prodigious body of theological writings, they stand among the most persuasive works of the sinner-turned-priest who was to exercise a greater influence on Christian thought than any of the other Church fathers.

Book THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL

Download or read book THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL written by Dr. Ope Banwo and published by Dr Ope Banwo. This book was released on 2023-06-04 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The personal testimony of a 21st Century Prodigal. His days in the ‘far country’, his Redemption, Restoration and the Problems he encountered from the ‘older brothers’ in the house. One fateful Wednesday morning, the story hit me with such a powerful force that I was speechless for some moments! I had read the story of the prodigal son in the Bible many times before but the story never ministered to me the way it did on this Wednesday morning. All of a sudden, it was as if a switch had been turned on in my head and the story took a whole new line of meaning in my life. The Holy Spirit began to show me that this is the story of my life. The grace extended to the prodigal son in the story is the same type of grace I have received from God and this is the message that the Holy Spirit wants me to testify to: that is, the unlimited grace of our Lord Jesus Christ to the lost, the wayward, the incorrigible and the damned. The Lord stands ready to show His divine favor and grace on all who would dare to return from the wilderness. He dares us to return to Him and see whether He really is just and faithful to forgive us all our iniquities as He promised through His prophets

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a bittersweet twist of fate, I started out “too Jewish” for my Catholic friends in elementary school, but not Jewish enough for the kids I met at summer camp, with their youth group logos and wristbands. In Israel, I didn't feel I had the right to call myself Jewish at all. Now I was too Christian for Jews everywhere, but still too Jewish to completely fit in with my new bible study friends. In my most pessimistic moments, I wonder if I'll never fit in anywhere, with anyone. It's interesting because Christians are called to be pariahs, to go against the ways of this world. But I am a special kind of pariah.
