Download or read book Guidelines for Conducting and Calibrating Road Roughness Measurements written by Michael W. Sayers and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road roughness is gaining increasing importance as an indicator of road condition, both in terms of pavement performance, and as a major determinant of road user costs. This paper defines roughness measurement systems hierachically into four groups, ranging from profilometric methods (2 groups), through response type road roughness measuring systems (RTRRMS's), and, subjective evaluation. The International Roughness Index (IRI) is defined, and the programs for it's calculation are provided. The IRI is based on simulation of the roughness response of a car travelling at 80 km/h. The report explains how all roughness measurements can be related to this scale, also when travelling at lower speeds than 80 km/h. The IRI emerges as a scale that can be used both for calibration and for comparative purposes.

Download or read book The Dream Machine written by M. Mitchell Waldrop and published by Stripe Press. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the man who instigated the work that led to the internet—and shifted our understanding of what computers could be. Behind every great revolution is a vision and behind perhaps the greatest revolution of our time, personal computing, is the vision of J.C.R. Licklider. He did not design the first personal computers or write the software that ran on them, nor was he involved in the legendary early companies that brought them to the forefront of our everyday experience. He was instead a relentless visionary that saw the potential of the way individuals could interact with computers and software. At a time when computers were a short step removed from mechanical data processors, Licklider was writing treatises on "human-computer symbiosis", "computers as communication devices", and a now not-so-unfamiliar "Intergalactic Network." His ideas became so influential, his passion so contagious, that Waldrop called him "computing's Johnny Appleseed. In a simultaneously compelling personal narrative and comprehensive historical exposition, Waldrop tells the story of the man who not only instigated the work that led to the internet, but also shifted our understanding of what computers were and could be. Included in this edition are also the original texts of Licklider's three most influential writings: 'Man-computer symbiosis' (1960), which outlines the vision that inspired the personal computer revolution of the 1970s; his 'Intergalactic Network' memo (1963), which outlines the vision that inspired the internet; and "The computer as a communication device" (1968, co-authored with Robert Taylor), which amplifies his vision for what the network could become.
Download or read book Sheep and Goats in Developing Countries written by Winrock International Livestock Research and Training Center and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study are to assess the role of small ruminants (sheep and goats) in the food production systems of developing countries, examine their advantages and disadvantages, analyze the constraints limiting their further contribution to the welfare of small farm/low income rural producers, prescribe measures for overcoming these constraints, and make recommendations related to potential donor involvement in support of the development of sheep and goat production. Small ruminants are viewed as an integral, but not dominant component of complex agricultural systems. Particular emphasis is placed on sheep and goats in mixed herds grazing dry rangelands and in small mixed farm systems in medium to high rainfall areas. An analysis of major constraints -- ecological, biological, policy, and socio-economic -- leads to recommendations on the need for a balanced production system approach for research, training and development programs, and for a combination of support activities such as herd health programs, and formulation of favorable credit, marketing and pricing policies for small ruminants and their products.

Download or read book The African Trypanosomiases written by C. W. Lee and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1983 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiases are diseases of man and his domestic livestock that have contributed to the prevalence of poverty, malnutrition, and disease in much of tropical Africa. Although the human disease has caused considerable suffering and death, it is the disease of domestic livestock which has, in economic terms, had the most profound effects as a major factor restricting rural African development, particularly by limiting food supply and land use. After a general discussion of the disease and its effects, this report describes the problems and techniques of controlling tsetse-transmitted trypanosomiases in the context of rural development in Africa. It also attempts to show that techniques to achieve an effective degree of trypanosomaiasis control, at least in some ecological conditions, already exist and that there is now an urgent need to put them into practice in conjunction with practical land use programmes.
