Book Performance Evaluation of Multiprogrammed Time shared Computer Systems

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Multiprogrammed Time shared Computer Systems written by Akira Sekino and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a comprehensive set of hierarchically organized modular analytical models developed for the performance evaluation of multiprogrammed virtual-memory time-shared computer systems using demand paging. The hierarchy of models contains a user behavior model, a secondary memory model, a program behavior model, a processor model, and a total system model. This thesis is particularly concerned with the last three models. The program behavior model developed in this thesis permits one to estimate the frequency of paging expected on a given processing system. The processor model enables one to evaluate the throughput of a given multi-processor multi-memory processing system under multiprogramming. Finally, the total system model allows us to derive the response time distribution of an entire computer system under study. The report includes two PL/I programs. (Author).

Book An analysis of central processor scheduling in multiprogrammed computer systems digest edition

Download or read book An analysis of central processor scheduling in multiprogrammed computer systems digest edition written by Stanford University. Computer Science Department and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple finite source model is used to gain insight into the effect of central processor scheduling in multiprogrammed computer systems. CPU utilization is chosen as the measure of performance and this decision is discussed. A relation between CPU utilization and flow time is developed. It is shown that the shortest-remaining-processing-time discipline maximizes both CPU utilization and I/O utilization for the queueing model M/G/1/n. An exact analysis of processor utilization using shortest-remaining-processing-time scheduling for systems with two jobs is given and it is observed that the processor utilization is independent of the form of the processing time distribution. The effect of the CPU processing time distribution on performance is discussed. The results are used to compare several scheduling disciplines of practical interest. An approximate expression for CPU utilization using shortest-remaining-processing-time scheduling in systems with N jobs is given. (Modified author abstract).

Book Analysis of a Continuum of Processor sharing Models for Time shared Computer Systems

Download or read book Analysis of a Continuum of Processor sharing Models for Time shared Computer Systems written by Jiunn Hsu and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processor-sharing models of time-shared computer systems are defined and some new results are presented. The major emphasis of this research is on the modeling and analysis of new models of time-shared computer systems and on the finding of some fundamental properties which apply to the average number of customers in the system and the average response time functions for a large class of time-shared computer systems. The family of selfish scheduling algorithms is defined and the Laplace transform of the response time functions are obtained. A family of scheduling algorithms whose performance ranges between that of the RR system and the FB system is constructed. A simple relationship between the time-dependent average number of customers in the system and the average response time functions for a large class of M/M/1 systems is formulated. Finally, some fundamental properties are established which apply to the average response time functions for all time-shared computer systems. (Author).

Book Approximate Models for Processor Utilization in Multiprogrammed Computer Systems

Download or read book Approximate Models for Processor Utilization in Multiprogrammed Computer Systems written by Donald Paul Gaver and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents results of an approximation study of cyclic queueing phenomena that occur in multiprogrammed computer systems. Based on Wald's Identity and using ideas of diffusion, the objective is to develop convenient and nearly explicit formulas relating processor use in such systems to simple program parameters and the level of multiprogramming. Some numerical results to indicate the quality of the proposed approximation are given. (Author).

Book Application of Queueing Models to Multiprogrammed Computer Systems Operating in a Time Critical Environment

Download or read book Application of Queueing Models to Multiprogrammed Computer Systems Operating in a Time Critical Environment written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model of a central processor (CPU) which services background applications in the presence of time critical activity is presented. The CPU is viewed as an M/M/1 queueing system subject to periodic interrupts by deterministic, time critical process. The Laplace transform of the distribution of service times for the background applications is developed. The use of state of the art queueing models for studying the background processing capability of time critical computer systems is discussed and the results of a model validation study which support this application of queueing models are presented. Book Notes on modelling of computer systems and networks

Download or read book Notes on modelling of computer systems and networks written by Stanford University Stanford Electronics Laboratories. Digital Systems Laboratory and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formulation of given computer system or network problems into abstract stochastic models is considered. Generally speaking, model formulation is an art. While analytic results are clearly not powerful enough to provide a "cookbook" approach to modelling, general methodology and difficulties on model formulation are discussed through examination of various computer system and network models. These models are presented in a systematic way based on the hierarchical approach.
