Book excerpt: This discovery of carbon nanotubes (CNT) three decades ago ushered in the technological era of nanotechnology. Among the most widely studied areas of CNT research is their use as structural reinforcements in composites. This book describes the development of CNT reinforced metal matrix composites (CNT-MMCs) over the last two decades. The field of CNT-MMCs is abundant in fundamental science, rich in engineering challenges and innovations and ripe for technological maturation and commercialization. The authors have sought to present the current state of the-art in CNT-MMC technology from their synthesis to their myriad potential end-use applications. Specifically, topics explored include: • Advantages, limitations, and evolution of processing techniques used to synthesize and fabricate CNT-MMCs • Emphasizes dispersion techniques of CNTs in metallic systems, a key challenge to the successful and widespread implementation of CNT-MMCs. Methods for quantification and improved control of CNT distributions are presented • Methods for quantification and improved control of CNT distributions are presented • Characterization techniques uniquely suited for charactering these nanoscale materials and their many chemical and physical interactions with the metal matrix, including real-time in-situ characterization of deformation mechanisms • Electron microscope images from premier studies enrich discussions on micro-mechanical modeling, interfacial design, mechanical behavior, and functional properties • A chapter is dedicated to the emergence of dual reinforcement composites that seek to enhance the efficacy of CNTs and lead to material properties by design This book highlights seminal findings in CNT-MMC research and includes several tables listing processing methods, associated CNT states, and resulting properties in order to aid the next generation of researchers in advancing the science and engineering of CNT-MMCs. In addition, a survey of the patent literature is presented in order to shed light on what the first wave of CNT-MMC commercialization may look like and the challenges that will have to be overcome, both technologically and commercially.

Book The Processing and Characterization of Aluminum Boride Flake reinforced Aluminum Matrix Composites

Download or read book The Processing and Characterization of Aluminum Boride Flake reinforced Aluminum Matrix Composites written by Carl Ludwig Deppisch and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AlB$\sb2$ flakes in an aluminum matrix offer the potential for greatly increased composite mechanical and wear properties because of their high aspect ratio, very high mechanical properties and good wetting to the aluminum matrix. This thesis describes, for the first time, an approach to the processing of AlB$\sb2$ flake reinforced aluminum alloy composites in the absence of any other Al-B phase. The processing route is presented and then the crystallization and growth behavior of the flakes are described. Specifically, a high temperature heat treatment is discussed which produces a homogeneous distribution of AlB$\sb2$ flakes in the absence of AlB$\sb{12}$ cuboidal impurities. The production of high aspect ratio 10v/o and 20v/o AlB$\sb2$/Al-Cu composites along with the resultant composite mechanical properties is then described. The randomly oriented AlB$\sb2$ flake reinforced aluminum matrix composites show a significant enhancement of the strength and modulus over the aluminum alloy both at room and elevated temperatures. Increased planar alignment of the flakes is demonstrated to further increase the mechanical properties of the composites. Wear, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion data of the composites are then presented. The incorporation of AlB$\sb2$ flakes in aluminum is shown to increase the wear resistance and decrease both the thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient in the longitudinal direction.

Book Characterization of Silicon Carbide Particulate Reinforced Squeeze Cast Aluminum 7075 Matrix Composite

Download or read book Characterization of Silicon Carbide Particulate Reinforced Squeeze Cast Aluminum 7075 Matrix Composite written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanical behavior and its relation with processing and microstructure of the silicon carbide particulate (SiCp) reinforced aluminum matrix composite. Aluminum 7075 alloy is chosen as matrix alloy, in which zinc is the main alloying element. Four different additions of SiCp were used and the weight fractions were 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%. Composites were processed by with squeeze casting and the applied pressure during casting was 80 MPa. The mould is specially designed to produce both specimens ready for tensile and three point bending tests. Both as-cast and heat treated aluminum composites were examined and T6 heat treatment was applied. Three point bending tests were performed to reveal the fracture strength of aluminum composites. 10wt% SiCp aluminum composites showed the maximum flexural strength in both as-cast and heat treated composites. The mechanical test results revealed that precipitated phases in heat treated composites, behaved like fine silicon carbide particulates and they acted as barriers to dislocation motion. Maximum flexural strength increased about 40 MPa (10%) in as-cast and 180 MPa (44%) in heat treated composites. Tensile testing was also conducted to verify the results of the three point bending tests. Hardness tests were done to find the effect of silicon carbide addition and to find the peak hardness in heat treatment. For as-cast specimens hardness values increased from 133 to 188 Vickers hardness (10 kg.) with increase in SiCp content from 0 to 30wt% and for heat treatment specimens hardness values increased from 171 to 221 Vickers hardness (10 kg.). The peak hardness values were obtained at 24 hours precipitation heat treatment. SEM studies were carried out to examine the heat treated composites, to take SEM photographs and to obtain a general elemental analysis. Theoretical volume percentage addition of SiCp was checked with Clemex Image Analyzer program. Distribution of SiCp was determined b.

Book Processing and Characterization of Zirconium Dioxide Dispersion Strengthened Al7068 Composites

Download or read book Processing and Characterization of Zirconium Dioxide Dispersion Strengthened Al7068 Composites written by Madhusudhan Mariswamy and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum metal matrix composites are a class of advanced engineering materials that have major applications in aerospace, automobile, and marine engineering domains because of their mechanical properties. The aluminum matrix is dispersion strengthened with hard ceramic particles like zirconia (ZrO2), silicon carbide, alumina, boron carbide, and so forth bringing about better wear protection and enhanced strength-to-weight ratios. In light of the advances in the size and morphology of the reinforcements, it is indeed a sensitive task to process the aluminum composite materials. Among the various processing methodologies, the traditional stir casting technique is an important fabrication methodology for delivering aluminum matrix composites, since it is generally reasonable and offers an extensive variety of material processing conditions. An endeavor has been made to manufacture Aluminum Matrix Composites (AMCs) with the Al7068 alloy as the matrix phase and ZrO2of a generalized particulate size of 25-40 ?m as the reinforcement phase dispersed with varying weight proportions in the range of 0 to 12 wt. % in intervals of 2 wt. % utilizing an indigenously created stir casting process. The homogeneous scattering of ZrO2 particles in the AMCs is distinctly observed from the optical micrographs. Mechanical characterization is effectively done, and the tensile, compression, hardness properties of the composites are taken into account, which gives major evidence that the characteristics of the AMCs improve with the addition of reinforcement particulates attributed to the fact that ZrO2 forms a solid solution with the Al7068 eutectic phases, resulting in improved densification and better toughness and load-bearing capabilities.
