Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a huge amount of innovation in both the principles and practice of operating systems Over the same period, the core ideas in a modern operating system - protection, concurrency, virtualization, resource allocation, and reliable storage - have become widely applied throughout computer science. Whether you get a job at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, or any other leading-edge technology company, it is impossible to build resilient, secure, and flexible computer systems without the ability to apply operating systems concepts in a variety of settings. This book examines the both the principles and practice of modern operating systems, taking important, high-level concepts all the way down to the level of working code. Because operating systems concepts are among the most difficult in computer science, this top to bottom approach is the only way to really understand and master this important material.

Book AIX 7 2 PowerVM UNIX Virtualization and Security An administrator s guide

Download or read book AIX 7 2 PowerVM UNIX Virtualization and Security An administrator s guide written by Sebastian Biedroń and published by Sebastian Biedroń. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get to know the IBM AIX operating system! The topics covered include: - Basics of the AIX operating system; - Virtualization, PowerVM, Virtual I/O Server; - Installation and maintenance of the AIX operating system; - Management of users, disks, and the file system; - Backup and system diagnostics; - Performance tips; - Security features. Operating systems from the UNIX family are known for their high reliability and performance. This is why many companies use such systems to manage key application servers. One of the systems that belongs to this family is AIX, which has gained popularity in recent years due to its significant potential for virtualization as well as the fact that its security configuration meets the strictest security requirements.

Book Transparent Process Migration in the Sprite Operating System

Download or read book Transparent Process Migration in the Sprite Operating System written by Fred Douglis and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empirical measurements of migration use over periods of time ranging from a month to a year are presented. These measurements include the overall use of migration (31% of all processing in Sprite was performed using migration), the availability of idle hosts (71% of hosts were available for migration during the day, with more hosts available at other times), and the correlation between host idle time and likelihood of eviction (evictons were likely only when hosts that had just become idle were used)."

Book The MOSIX Distributed Operating System

Download or read book The MOSIX Distributed Operating System written by Amnon Barak and published by Lecture Notes in Computer Science. This book was released on 1993-05-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the design and internals of the MOSIX distributed operating system. MOSIX, an acronym for Multicomputer Operating System for UNIX, integrates a cluster of loosely integrated computers into a virtual single-machine UNIX environment. The main property of MOSIX is the high degree of integration among the processors, which may include personal workstations and shared memory and non-shared memory multiprocessors, connected by fast communication links. This integration includes network transparency, cooperation between the processors to provide services across machine boundaries, support of dynamic configuration, and system-initiated load balancing by process migration. Another property of MOSIX is the ability to scale up the system configuration to encompass a large number of computers. The development of MOSIX was begun in 1981. The book is intended primarily for readers who are interested in distributed and multiprocessor systems. The reader is assumed to have some knowledge in programming and operating systems, preferably UNIX. Readers without this background will still benefit from thetechniques and algorithms discussed.
