Book Process for the Removal of Acid Forming Gases from Exhaust Gases

Download or read book Process for the Removal of Acid Forming Gases from Exhaust Gases written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exhaust gases are treated to remove NO or NO.sub.x and SO.sub. 2 by contacting the gases with an aqueous emulsion or suspension of yellow phosphorus preferably in a wet scrubber. The pressure is not critical, and ambient pressures are used. Hot water temperatures are best, but economics suggest about 50.degree. C. are attractive. The amount of yellow phosphorus used will vary with the composition of the exhaust gas, less than 3% for small concentrations of NO, and 10% or higher for concentrations above say 1000 ppm. Similarly, the pH will vary with the composition being treated, and it is adjusted with a suitable alkali. For mixtures of NO.sub.x and SO.sub. 2, alkalis that are used for flue gas desulfurization are preferred. With this process, 100% of the by-products created are usable, and close to 100% of the NO or NO and SO.sub. 2 can be removed in an economic fashion.

Book Process for the Removal of Acid Forming Gases from Exhaust Gases and Production of Phosphoric Acid

Download or read book Process for the Removal of Acid Forming Gases from Exhaust Gases and Production of Phosphoric Acid written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exhaust gases are treated to remove NO or NO.sub.x and SO.sub. 2 by contacting the gases with an aqueous emulsion or suspension of yellow phosphorous preferably in a wet scrubber. The addition of yellow phosphorous in the system induces the production of O.sub. 3 which subsequently oxidizes NO to NO.sub. 2. The resulting NO.sub. 2 dissolves readily and can be reduced to form ammonium ions by dissolved SO.sub. 2 under appropriate conditions. In a 20 acfm system, yellow phosphorous is oxidized to yield P.sub. 2 O.sub. 5 which picks up water to form H.sub. 3 PO.sub. 4 mists and can be collected as a valuable product. The pressure is not critical, and ambient pressures are used. Hot water temperatures are best, but economics suggest about 50.degree. C. With this process, better than 90% of SO.sub. 2 and NO in simulated flue gas can be removed. Stoichiometric ratios (P/NO) ranging between 0.6 and 1.5 were obtained.

This book was released on 2000-10-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incineration has been used widely for waste disposal, including household, hazardous, and medical wasteâ€"but there is increasing public concern over the benefits of combusting the waste versus the health risk from pollutants emitted during combustion. Waste Incineration and Public Health informs the emerging debate with the most up-to-date information available on incineration, pollution, and human healthâ€"along with expert conclusions and recommendations for further research and improvement of such areas as risk communication. The committee provides details on: Processes involved in incineration and how contaminants are released. Environmental dynamics of contaminants and routes of human exposure. Tools and approaches for assessing possible human health effects. Scientific concerns pertinent to future regulatory actions. The book also examines some of the social, psychological, and economic factors that affect the communities where incineration takes place and addresses the problem of uncertainty and variation in predicting the health effects of incineration processes.

Book Sulphur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxides in Industrial Waste Gases

Download or read book Sulphur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxides in Industrial Waste Gases written by Daniel van Velzen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. VAN VELZEN Commission of the European Communities, Joint Research Centre Ispra, Environment Institute, 1-21020 Ispra (Varese) ITAL Y 1. Introduction Worldwide, there is an ever increasing interest and concern about the destructive effects of air pollution on man's ecosystem. The growing awareness of these effects has revealed the need to take adequate measures to minimize the emission of air polluting products. The two most important contaminants, occurring in the largest concentrations and quantities, are sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Both pollutants are formed mainly during the combustion of fossil fuels, particularly by power stations and traffic. The effects of air pollution caused by these two contaminants have already been studied for several decades and measures to protect the environment against their adverse effects are now operative in many countries. The present volume contains the proceedings of a Eurocourse held in Ispra in September 1990. The course was meant to give an overview of present knowledge concerning the emission sources and quantities, to cover features of present legislation and to give a survey of the most important modern abatement techniques for S02 and NOx. It was mainly addressed to higher and medium management in the power, chemical and similar industries, particularly from those countries where the fight against air pollution is still in its infancy. Obviously, it was not possible to cover completely the whole range of subjects during the limited duration of a Eurocourse.

Book Method of Removing Oxides of Sulfur and Oxides of Nitrogen from Exhaust Gases

Download or read book Method of Removing Oxides of Sulfur and Oxides of Nitrogen from Exhaust Gases written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous method is presented for removing both oxides of sulfur and oxides of nitrogen from combustion or exhaust gases with the regeneration of the absorbent. Exhaust gas is cleaned of particulates and HCl by a water scrub prior to contact with a liquid absorbent that includes an aqueous solution of bisulfite and sulfite ions along with a metal chelate, such as, an iron or zinc aminopolycarboxylic acid. Following contact with the combustion gases the spent absorbent is subjected to electrodialysis to transfer bisulfite ions into a sulfuric acid solution while splitting water with hydroxide and hydrogen ion migration to equalize electrical charge. The electrodialysis stack includes alternate layers of anion selective and bipolar membranes. Oxides of nitrogen are removed from the liquid absorbent by air stripping at an elevated temperature and the regenerated liquid absorbent is returned to contact with exhaust gases for removal of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.

Book Laboratory Testing of a Fluidized Bed Dry Scrubbing Process for the Removal of Acidic Gases from a Simulated Incinerator Flue Gas

Download or read book Laboratory Testing of a Fluidized Bed Dry Scrubbing Process for the Removal of Acidic Gases from a Simulated Incinerator Flue Gas written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of bench-scale tests was conducted to evaluate a dry, fluidized-bed, scrubbing process for removing acidic gases from incinerator flue gas. The acidic gases studied were sulfur oxide, hydrogen chloride, and phosphorus pentoxide. These gases were found to react readily with lime in a bubbling bed operating at 540 C (1000 F). Superficial gas velocity, bed temperature, bed depth, sorbent type, and sorbent utilization strongly affected the degree of acidic gas removal. Sorbent utilization was inhibited by reaction product occlusion of the particle surface. Keywords: Waste disposal; Environmental protection; Pollution abatement; Air pollution.

Book Production Integrated Environmental Protection and Waste Management in the Chemical Industry

Download or read book Production Integrated Environmental Protection and Waste Management in the Chemical Industry written by Claus Christ and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production-integrated environmental protection is synonymous with - reducing the amount of potential pollutants at source - reducing the consumption of resources and energy - recycling and utilization of residues and used products, and therefore a topic of considerable current interest. No chemical process exists that produces only the product desired. Therefore it is an important aim of the chemical industry to reduce the environmental effects of residues of chemical processes. This can be achieved by: - optimizing processes - applying new synthesis routes - improving selectivity - replacing auxiliaries that have a harmful effect on the environment - production-integrated recovery of residues to name just a few possibilities. If you want to know more about them, have a look at Protection-Integrated Environmental Protection and Waste Management. There you will find examples from the chemical industry where modification of existing manufacturing processes or the design of new processes has led to reduction of environmental pollution. Data from companies are given who operate world-wide reflecting a multi national situation.
