Book Psychology Serving Humanity Proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology

Download or read book Psychology Serving Humanity Proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology written by Saths Cooper and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-06-27 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes collecting the key proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology, the first to be held in Africa in the 123 years of its history. The theme of the conference was "Psychology Serving Humanity", a recognition of psychology's unfulfilled mission in the majority world and a reflection of what that world requires from psychology. Mainstream Psychology finds its largest number of exponents and leading personalities in the high income countries of the global West. The Other Psychologies, referred to by different names, are scattered across the rest of the world. Some of the names of these other forms of Psychology include indigenous Psychology. The main driver of indigenous and other forms of non-mainstream Psychology is the endeavour to embed the discipline in the dynamics of local societies. Psychology has entered an interesting era, however. While the dominant philosophy underpinning the discipline remains Western, Psychology in the majority world in 2000s may have reached a tipping point. It took over a hundred years but the 2004 and 2012 International Congresses of Psychology held in China and South Africa heralded a newfound possibility for the discipline. There is an opening of the field to potentially new thought and forms of the practice of Psychology. These proceedings are published in the hope that all psychologists, especially those located in well-resourced institutions in the West, confront the divided reality that characterizes Psychology so as to creatively consider the opportunity opened up by the growing field at the peripheries. Care was taken when assembling both conference and proceedings to ensure that the entire international psychological community was represented. Volume One contains contributions to Majority World Psychology. Volume Two contains contributions to Western Psychology.

Book Social Change and Personality

Download or read book Social Change and Personality written by Mervin B. Freedman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nevitt Sanford's career in psychology has spanned the years from the 1930's to the present. The canon of his works is vast--eight books and some 200 chapters, monographs, and articles. The contributions to this book, by students and colleagues, remind us of the great variety and significance of the concerns and interests he has addressed--development over the course of a human life, education (with emphasis upon higher education), personality theory, and political psychology (incorporating the concept of social action). Arriving upon the scene in psychology when he did, one of Nevitt Sanford's first publications, KhY~i~~~, K~~~££~li!r, ~££ ~£~£l~~~~iE (1943), reflected the interest of that time in biology and physiology (a concern of psychology which declined for some time thereafter, to be revived in the 1960's). It was also, however, the decade after psyc- analysis and Marxist ideology had made their dramatic entrance upon the stage of American intellectual life, and these two schools of thought, in many ways contradictory, have profoundly influenced him ever since. Nevitt has never lost his fascination with the power of infancy and childhood to affect development, and with the workings of the unconscious.

Book Research in the Schizophrenic Disorders

Download or read book Research in the Schizophrenic Disorders written by R. Cancro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1957, Stanley R. Dean proposed the creation of a founda tion on schizophrenia to a group of friends. The purpose was to bring the illness of schizophrenia before the public's attention and out of the shameful anonymity in which it was buried. Stanley Dean recognized the major public health importance of this illness and was determined to have an impact on it during his lifetime. By December of that year, the decision was made to create an organization called Research in Schizophrenia Endowment (RISE). Within less than two months articles of incorporation for RISE were issued by the State of Connecticut. By the latter part of March 1958, Dean was successful in getting Congress to provide $1,300,000 for research into schizophrenia. This was the first time that Congress had targeted funds specifically for research on this disorder. Within a year, by April 1959, Dr. Dean was instrumental in getting Congress to increase its appro priation to the NIMH by more than $8,000,000 with the specific instruction that approximately one-half of the total research funds of the NIMH be used for projects relating to schizophrenia. In the spring of 1960, RISE relinquished its corporate charter and became an integral part of the Research Foundation of the National Association for Mental Health. This merger occurred before RISE had implemented its planned annual award program for outstanding research in schizophrenia. Several members of the Board of Directors of RISE, under the leadership of Dr. James G.
