Book Proceedings of the XXth International Congress of History of Science Li ge 20 26 July 1997

Download or read book Proceedings of the XXth International Congress of History of Science Li ge 20 26 July 1997 written by Dieter Hoffmann and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often technology is seen as inferior to science, as a simple practical application of a self-sufficient "pure" knowledge. Such a dichotomy is for sure an illusion. The contributions met in this volume, reflecting the richness and the density of the session Science, Technology and Industry during the XXth International Congress of History of Science in Liege in 1997, show all technology as nothing less than the bridge between science on one side, society and economy on the other side. And this bridge is not a one-way road but a place of interactions between the theoretical and the applied, between the knowledge and the know-how. A special section of this book demonstrates that this equal footing dialogue has been particularly intense as far as the military technical development is concerned, and that for many centuries.

Book Establishing Quantum Physics in G ttingen

Download or read book Establishing Quantum Physics in G ttingen written by Arne Schirrmacher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics – the grandiose theory that describes nature down to the submicroscopic level – was first formulated in Göttingen in 1925. How did this come about and why is it that Göttingen became the pre-eminent location for a revolution in physics? This book is the first to investigate the wide range of factors that were pivotal for quantum physics to be established in Göttingen. These include the process of generational change of physics professors, the hopes of mathematicians seeking new fields of research, and a new understanding of the interplay of experiment, theory and philosophy.

Book Theory Choice in the History of Chemical Practices

Download or read book Theory Choice in the History of Chemical Practices written by Emma Tobin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the question of theory from the perspective of the history of chemistry. Through the lens of a number of different periods, the authors provide a historical analysis of the question of theory in the history of chemical practice. The consensus picture that emerges is that the history of science tells us a much more complex story about theory choice. A glimpse at scientific practice at the time shows that different, competing as well as non-competing, theories were used in the context of the scientific practice at the various times and sometimes played a pivotal pedagogical role in training the next generation of chemists. This brief brings together a history of chemical practice, and in so doing reveals that theory choice is conceptually more problematic than was originally conceived. This volume was produced as part of the Ad HOC chemistry research group hosted by University College London and University of Cambridge.

Book Graphics and Text in the Production of Technical Knowledge in China

Download or read book Graphics and Text in the Production of Technical Knowledge in China written by Francesca Bray and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-10-15 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection offers a challenging new interpretation of technical knowledge in Chinese thought and practice. Conveying technical knowledge in China through charts, plans or drawings (tu) dates back to antiquity. Earlier studies focused on specialised forms of tu like maps or drawings of machines. Here, however, tu is identified in Chinese terms, viz. as a philosophical category of knowledge production: visual templates for action, spanning a range from mandala to modernist mapping projects, inseparable from writing but with distinctive powers of communication. A distinction is made between two principal types of tu: ritual/symbolic and representational, highlighting essential issues such as historical shifts in their significance, the relations between tu and political power, media for inscribing tu and the impact of printing, and encounters with the West.

Book Robert Hooke

  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Robert Hooke written by Michael Hunter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Hooke (1635-1703) was a genius whose wide-ranging achievements are at last receiving the recognition that they deserve. Long overshadowed by such eminent contemporaries as Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Christopher Wren, Hooke's own seminal contributions to science, architecture and technology are now being acclaimed in their own right. Curator of Experiments to the Royal Society when it was chartered in 1662 and author of the famous Micrographia (1665), Hooke also showed unparalleled ingenuity in designing machines and instruments, and played a crucial role as Surveyor to the City of London after the Great Fire. This volume represents a benchmark in the study of Hooke, bringing together a comprehensive set of studies of different aspects of his life, thought and artistry. Its sections deal with Hooke's life and reputation; his contributions to celestial mechanics and astronomy, and to speculative natural philosophy; the instruments that he designed; and his work in architecture and construction. The introduction places the studies in the context of our current understanding of Hooke and his milieu, while the book also contains a comprehensive bibliography. In all, it will be an invaluable resource for all those interested in a figure whose complexity and importance are becoming clear after centuries of neglect.

Book Proceedings of the XXth International Congress of History of Science Li ge 20 26 July 1997 Between the natural and the artificial dyestuffs and medicines

Download or read book Proceedings of the XXth International Congress of History of Science Li ge 20 26 July 1997 Between the natural and the artificial dyestuffs and medicines written by Dieter Hoffmann and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thematic volume consists of a selection of papers from the XXth International Congress of History of Science, which was held in Liege in 1997. Two separated symposia were concerned with the study of historical connections between such different scientific fields as chemistry, botany, pharmacy, medicine and their technical aspects. Natural products from plants and animals, and their artificial equivalents, which were especially studied and used for dyeing and for medicinal purposes, were discussed in both meetings. The various contributions of the present volume deal with many of these products in several countries (in Europe, Asia, Africa and America) from the medieval period to the XIXth century. The first part treats of some historical aspects of chemical and pharmaceutical questions related to selected dyestuffs. The second part deals with pharmaceutical products for medicinal and biological purposes. These studies should contribute to foster new interdisciplinary research in this field, which is bound to develop at the international level.

Book excerpt: The theme of materials in the history of technology has never been as well researched as other more popular areas like energy, production technology or transport and communication. The present collection of papers originating from the symposium on Materials: Science, Technology and Early Applications in conjunction with the 20th International History of Science Congress in Liege, 1997, make a contribution to remedying this unsatisfactory situation. They concentrate on the 19th and 20th centuries and range from research on the metallurgy of zinc in the late 18th and early 19th century to the prospects of ceramic materials to ameliorate contemporary environmental problems.

Book Science and Technology in East Asia

Download or read book Science and Technology in East Asia written by Joseph Needham and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 20th International Congress of History of Science (Liege, July 1997) was the first to be held after Joseph Needham (1900-1995) passed away. During the Congress the symposium entitled "Global history of science" was dedicated to this scholar usually recognised as the founder of the study of East Asian science. The symposium aimed at highlighting the significance of his research, which has influenced historians of science in their study of all civilisations. The papers presented there and included in this volume focus on various historiographical and methodo-logical issues raised by Needham's work and on questions which he has opened to investigation. These issues and questions are relevant not only to the history of East Asian science and technology, but also to the history of science at large, once one envisions it in a global perspective. This volume is rounded off by four further papers that are repre-sentative of current research in the history of East Asian science.
