Download or read book Advances in Haploid Production in Higher Plants written by Alisher Touraev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of haploids is well known to geneticists and plant breeders. The discovery of anther-derived haploid Datura plants in 1964 initiated great excitement in the plant breeding and genetics communities as it offered shortcuts in producing highly desirable homozygous plants. Unfortunately, the expected revolution was slow to materialise due to problems in extending methods to other species, including genotypic dependence, recalcitrance, slow development of tissue culture technologies and a lack of knowledge of the underlying processes. Recent years have witnessed great strides in the research and application of haploids in higher plants. After a lull in activities, drivers for the resurgence have been: (1) development of effective tissue culture protocols, (2) identification of genes c- trolling embryogenesis, and (3) large scale and wide spread commercial up-take in plant breeding and plant biotechnology arenas. The first major international symposium on “Haploids in Higher Plants” took place in Guelph, Canada in 1974. At that time there was much excitement about the potential benefits, but in his opening address Sir Ralph Riley offered the following words of caution: “I believe that it is quite likely that haploid research will contr- ute cultivars to agriculture in several crops in the future. However, the more extreme claims of the enthusiasts for haploid breeding must be treated with proper caution. Plant breeding is subject from time to time to sweeping claims from ent- siastic proponents of new procedures.
Download or read book Breeding and Health Benefits of Fruit and Nut Crops written by Jaya Soneji and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fruit and nut crops are laden with health benefits. As people are becoming more conscious about their health and nutritional uptake, the worldwide demand and consumption of fruit and nut crops are steadily increasing. This has made it hard to keep pace between the rate of fruit and nut production and its consumption. To meet this increasing demand, there is a need to produce improved, better yielding, and high-quality fruit and nut crops. This book intends to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the current status and future prospects of fruit and nut crops. Such information covered in this book will directly enhance both basic and applied research in fruit and nut crops and will particularly be useful for students, scientists, researchers, teachers, breeders, policy-makers, and growers.

Specific topics covered consisted of: botany and taxonomy (chapter 1); history of cultivation and trends in China (chapter 2); classical genetics and breeding (chapter 3); genetic engineering and genomics (chapter 4); low-chill cultivar development (chapter 5); fresh market cultivar development (chapter 6); processing peach cultivar development (chapter 7); rootstock development (chapter 8); propagation techniques (chapter 9); carbon assimilation, partitioning and budget modelling (chapter 10); orchard planting systems (chapter 11); crop load management (chapter 12); nutrient and water requirements of peach trees (chapter 13); orchard floor management systems (chapter 14); biology, epidemiology and management of diseases caused by fungi and fungal-like organisms (chapter 15); diseases caused by bacteria and phytoplasmas ['Candidatus Phytoplasma'] (chapter 16); viruses and viroids (chapter 17); insects and mites (chapter 18); nematodes (chapter 19); preharvest factors affecting peach quality (chapter 20); ripening, nutrition and postharvest physiology (chapter 21); and harvesting and postharvest handling of peaches for the fresh market (chapter 22). This book aims to provide research scientists, extension personnel, students, professional fruit growers and others with a vital resource on peach and its culture.

Download or read book Plant Responses to Hypoxia written by Elena Loreti and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular oxygen deficiency leads to altered cellular metabolism and can dramatically reduce crop productivity. Nearly all crops are negatively affected by a lack of oxygen (hypoxia) due to adverse environmental conditions such as excessive rain and soil waterlogging. Extensive efforts to fully understand how plants sense oxygen deficiency and their ability to respond using different strategies are crucial to increase hypoxia tolerance. Progress in our understanding has been significant in recent years. This topic certainly deserves more attention from the academic community; therefore, we have compiled a series of articles reflecting the advancements made thus far.
