Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Water Harvesting Symposium, Phoenix, Arizona, March 26-28, 1974 Early in 1960, research programs in water harvesting were also initiated in Israel by Hillel and at the University of Arizona by Cluff. Hillel's work now relates primarily to soil smoothing and runoff farming Cluff has done a considerable amount of work on the use of soil sealing with sodium salts and on gravel-covered plastic membranes The most recent innovation in the construction of catchments appears to be the use of granulated wax spread over the ground surface so that the sun will melt the wax and cause it to flow into the soil. The resulting wax coating causes the soil, for some as yet unknown period of time, to become both water repellent and stabilized. After having presented these brief and incomplete excerpts from water harvesting history, as I know it, I would like to quote from a paper published in 1964, in which I attempted to outline the objectives we should strive for in research on water harvesting catchments (10) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Critical Food Issues of the Eighties

Download or read book Critical Food Issues of the Eighties written by Marylin Chou and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Food Issues of the Eighties: Pergamon Policy Studies — 39 focuses on the problems of the food industry, including food and nutrition policies and impact of regulation on food and agricultural productivity and agricultural chemicals. The selection first discusses the preoccupation with food safety, as well as advances in agricultural productivity and food processing; cultural and social changes affecting the food industry; and diet-related health concerns. The book then takes a look at food price inflation, as well as price trends in the food systems, economic efficiency in the food system, imported foods, and profitability. The text reviews changing food policies and national nutrition goals. Concerns include expanded constituency and components of food policies; conquering nutrition deficiency diseases; nutrient food disclosure; and difficulty of identifying nutrient usage or food group needs. The selection also tackles the effects of government policies on technological innovation in the food industry; assessment of future technological advances in agriculture and their impact on the regulatory environment; and changing attitudes and lifestyle shaping food technology in the 1980s. The book is a vital source of data for readers interested in the issues of the food industry in the 1980s.

Book Soil Water Repellency

Download or read book Soil Water Repellency written by C.J. Ritsema and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has become clear that soil water repellency is much more wide-spread than formerly thought. Water repellency has been reported in most continents of the world for varying land uses and climatic conditions. Soil water repellency often leads to severe runoff and erosion, rapid leaching of surface-applied agrichemicals, and losses of water and nutrient availability for crops. At present, no optimum management strategies exist for water repellent soils, focusing on minimizing environmental risks while maintaining crop production. The book starts with a historical overview of water repellency research, followed by seven thematic sections covering 26 research chapters. The first section discusses the origin, the second the assessment, and the third the occurrence and hydrological implications of soil water repellency. The fourth section is devoted to the effect of fire on water repellency, section five deals with the physics and modeling of flow and transport in water repellent soils, section six presents amelioration techniques and farming strategies to combat soil water repellency, and section seven concludes the book with an extensive bibliography on soil water repellency.
