Book A House in the Sun

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel A. Barber
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016-10-13
  • ISBN : 0199394032
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book A House in the Sun written by Daniel A. Barber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A House in the Sun describes a number of experiments in solar house heating in American architectural, engineering, political, economic, and corporate contexts from the beginning of World War II until the late 1950s. Houses were built across the Midwest, Northeast, and Southwestern United States, and also proposed for sites in India, South Africa, and Morocco. These experiments developed in parallel to transformations in the discussion of modern architecture, relying on new materials and design ideas for both energy efficiency and claims to cultural relevance. Architects were among the myriad cultural and scientific actors to see the solar house as an important designed element of the American future. These experiments also developed as part of a wider analysis of the globe as an interconnected geophysical system. Perceived resource limitations in the immediate postwar period led to new understandings of the relationship between energy, technology and economy. The solar house - both as a charged object in the milieu of suburban expansion, and as a means to raise the standard of living in developing economies - became an important site for social, technological, and design experimentation. This led to new forms of expertise in architecture and other professions. Daniel Barber argues that this mid-century interest in solar energy was one of the first episodes in which resource limitations were seen as an opportunity for design to attain new relevance for potential social and cultural transformations. Furthermore, the solar discussion established both an intellectual framework and a funding structure for the articulation of and response to global environmental concerns in subsequent decades. In presenting evidence of resource tensions at the beginning of the Cold War, the book offers a new perspective on the histories of architecture, technology, and environmentalism, one more fully entangled with the often competing dynamics of geopolitical and geophysical pressures.

Book Innovative Wind Turbines

Download or read book Innovative Wind Turbines written by Vaughn Nelson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovative Wind Turbines is a tribute to the inventors, entrepreneurs, researchers, and companies that through their efforts have envisioned, designed, and constructed models and prototypes for wind energy devices. There are numerous concepts and ideas on ways to convert wind energy into usable energy, and this book examines the innovative, novel, or unusual concepts with numerous photos and historical examples. Primarily, only prototypes that have been constructed are mentioned, along with a few design concepts. The wind turbines are divided by types: horizontal axis wind turbines, ducted wind turbines, vertical axis wind turbines, airborne wind turbines, and more. Features: Includes numerous photos of innovative wind turbines Presents information and examples of multiple rotor, multiple blade designs Includes information and examples of airborne wind energy systems Examines novel blade designs, including whale blades and biomimicry

Book Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture

Download or read book Handbook of Energy for World Agriculture written by B.A. Stout and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adequate food supplies and a reasonable quality of life require energy - both in commercial and non-commercial forms. This handbook is intended as a reference for individuals who want a comprehensive overview of energy for agriculture, many of whom are located in remote areas with limited library resources. The purpose is to put energy for agriculture in perspective by presenting numerous national and regional examples of energy usage.Since the early 1970s, world petroleum prices have fluctuated from US$3/barrel to more than US$40/barrel in 1981, and then back to one-third of the peak price today. Consequently, the rural sector depends heavily on non-commercial energy sources. Availability of such energy is highly site-specific. This handbook deals extensively with non-commercial energy - its sources, the technologies for converting energy to more useful gaseous and liquid forms, and its ultimate end-uses.Photographs, tables, line drawings and graphs are used extensively. Over 600 references are listed along with agency names and addresses for obtaining further information.

Book Solar Energy Technology Handbook

Download or read book Solar Energy Technology Handbook written by E. W. Dickinson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook, for convenient use, is divided into eight main units: (1) The Solar Resource; (2) Solar Thermal Collectors; (3) Photovoltaics; (4) Bioconversion; (5) Wind Energy; (6) Solar Energy Storage Systems; (7) Applications of Solar Energy; (8) Non-technical Issues. In addition there are three Appendixes containing unit-conversion tables and useful solar data. It became obvious early in this project that if proper coverage were to be given each of these areas it would be necessary to divide the handbook into two volumes. The first six units constitute Part A, Engineering Fundamentals and the last two units constitute Part B, Applications, Systems Design, and Economics. These volumes have been prepared primarily as reference books, but it is felt that many of the sections will prove useful for practicing engineers, scientists and students.
