Niels Bohr Superstring theory has emerged as the most promising candidate for a quan tum theory of all known interactions. Superstrings apparently solve a problem that has defied solution for the past 50 years, namely the unification of the two great fundamental physical theories of the century, quantum field theory and general relativity. Superstring theory introduces an entirely new physical picture into theoretical physics and a new mathematics that has startled even the mathematicians. Ironically, although superstring theory is supposed to provide a unified field theory of the universe, the theory itself often seems like a confused jumble offolklore, random rules of thumb, and intuition. This is because the develop ment of superstring theory has been unlike that of any other theory, such as general relativity, which began with a geometry and an action and later evolved into a quantum theory. Superstring theory, by contrast, has been evolving backward for the past 20 years. It has a bizarre history, beginning with the purely accidental discovery of the quantum theory in 1968 by G. Low-friction surfaces are in increasingly high demand for high-tech components such as computer storage systems, miniature motors, and aerospace devices. It has been estimated that about 5% of the gross national product in the developed countries is "wasted" on friction and the related wear. In spite of this, remarkable little is understood about the fundamental, microscopic processes responsible for friction and wear. The topic of interfacial sliding has experienced a major burst of in terest and activity since 1987, much of which has developed quite independently and spontaneously. This volume contains contributions from leading scientists on fundamental aspects of sliding friction. Some problems considered are: What is the origin of stick-and-slip motion? What is the origin of the rapid processes taking place within a lub at low sliding velocities? On a metallic surface, is the rication layer electronic or phononic friction the dominating energy dissipation pro cess? What is the role (if any) of self-organized criticality in sliding friction? How thick is the water layer during sliding on ice and snow? These and other questions raised in this book are of course only part ly answered: the topic of sliding friction is still in an early state of development.

Book excerpt: The papers in this book represent the proceedings for the International Conference on Oxygen Disorder Effects in High~Tc Superconductors, held April 18-21, 1989 at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. It was recognized very early in the field of ceramic superconductors that oxygen plays a crucial role as far as the physical properties of these ma terials are concerned. The preparation requires special heating and cooling cycles which allow proper uptake of oxygen, relationships were found between the oxygen concentration and the superconducting transition temperature in many of the compounds and quite recently it was recognized that many (if not all) of the compounds present oxygen ordering in the intercalating planes. Moreover, it seems that the presence of superconductivity is strongly correlated with the presence of orthorhombic phases although several groups have also claimed the presence of superconductivity in tetragonal phases. Whether oxygen ordering plays or not a crucial role for the superconductivity remains to be seen. However it is clear that the ordering of oxygens and their thermodynamic properties is an interesting subject on its own right. All these reasons led us to organize a Conference on Oxygen Disorder Effects in High-Tc Superconductors in attempt to identify unsolved problems and to have an open discussion of the presently known facts.
