Book excerpt: The main goal of this book is to present the so-called birational Arakelov geometry, which can be viewed as an arithmetic analog of the classical birational geometry, i.e., the study of big linear series on algebraic varieties. After explaining classical results about the geometry of numbers, the author starts with Arakelov geometry for arithmetic curves, and continues with Arakelov geometry of arithmetic surfaces and higher-dimensional varieties. The book includes such fundamental results as arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel formula, arithmetic Nakai-Moishezon criterion, arithmetic Bogomolov inequality, the existence of small sections, the continuity of arithmetic volume function, the Lang-Bogomolov conjecture and so on. In addition, the author presents, with full details, the proof of Faltings' Riemann-Roch theorem. Prerequisites for reading this book are the basic results of algebraic geometry and the language of schemes.

Book excerpt: The International Conference "Algebraic Geometry and Analytic Geometry, Tokyo 1990" was held at Tokyo Metropolitan University and the Tokyo Training Center of Daihyaku Mutual Life Insurance Co., from August 13 through August 17, 1990, under the co-sponsorship of the Mathematical Society of Japan. It was one of the satellite conferences of ICM90, Kyoto, and approximately 300 participants, including more than 100 from overseas, attended the conference. The academic program was divided into two parts, the morning sessions and the afternoon sessions. The morning sessions were held at Tokyo Metropolitan University, and two one-hour plenary lectures were delivered every day. The afternoon sessions at the Tokyo Training Center, intended for a more specialized audience, consisted of four separate subsessions: Arithemetic Geometry, Algebraic Geometry, Analytic Geometry I and Analytic Geometry II. This book contains papers which grew out of the talks at the conference. The committee in charge of the organization and program consisted of A. Fujiki, K. Kato, T. Katsura, Y. Kawamata, Y. Miyaoka, S. Mori, K. Saito, N. Sasakura, T. Suwa and K. Watanabe. Zeuthen's name is known to every algebraic geometer because of his discovery of a basic invariant of surfaces. However, he also did fundamental research in intersection theory, enumerative geometry, and the projective geometry of curves and surfaces. Zeuthen's extraordinary devotion to his subject, his characteristic depth, thoroughness, and clarity of thought, and his precise and succinct writing style are truly inspiring. During the past ten years or so, algebraic geometers have reexamined Zeuthen's work, drawing from it inspiration and new directions for development in the field. The 1989 Zeuthen Symposium, held in the summer of 1989 at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Copenhagen, provided a historic opportunity for mathematicians to gather and examine those areas in contemporary mathematical research which have evolved from Zeuthen's fruitful ideas. This volume, containing papers presented during the symposium, as well as others inspired by it, illuminates some currently active areas of research in enumerative algebraic geometry.
