Book Remote Sensing Image Analysis Including the Spatial Domain

Download or read book Remote Sensing Image Analysis Including the Spatial Domain written by Steven M. de Jong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote Sensing image analysis is mostly done using only spectral information on a pixel by pixel basis. Information captured in neighbouring cells, or information about patterns surrounding the pixel of interest often provides useful supplementary information. This book presents a wide range of innovative and advanced image processing methods for including spatial information, captured by neighbouring pixels in remotely sensed images, to improve image interpretation or image classification. Presented methods include different types of variogram analysis, various methods for texture quantification, smart kernel operators, pattern recognition techniques, image segmentation methods, sub-pixel methods, wavelets and advanced spectral mixture analysis techniques. Apart from explaining the working methods in detail a wide range of applications is presented covering land cover and land use mapping, environmental applications such as heavy metal pollution, urban mapping and geological applications to detect hydrocarbon seeps. The book is meant for professionals, PhD students and graduates who use remote sensing image analysis, image interpretation and image classification in their work related to disciplines such as geography, geology, botany, ecology, forestry, cartography, soil science, engineering and urban and regional planning.

Book Forest Inventory

Download or read book Forest Inventory written by Annika Kangas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been developed as a forest inventory textbook for students and could also serve as a handbook for practical foresters. We have set out to keep the mathematics in the book at a fairly non-technical level, and therefore, although we deal with many issues that include highly sophisticated methodology, we try to present first and foremost the ideas behind them. For foresters who need more details, references are given to more advanced scientific papers and books in the fields of statistics and biometrics. Forest inventory books deal mostly with sampling and measurement issues, as found here in section I, but since forest inventories in many countries involve much more than this, we have also included material on forestry applications. Most applications nowadays involve remote sensing technology of some sort, so that section II deals mostly with the use of remote sensing material for this purpose. Section III deals with national inventories carried out in different parts of world, and section IV is an attempt to outline some future possibilities of forest inventory methodologies. Matti Maltamo Professor of Forest Mensuration, Faculty of Forestry, University of Joensuu. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Book Advances in Forest Inventory for Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Monitoring

Download or read book Advances in Forest Inventory for Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Monitoring written by Piermaria Corona and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests represent a remnant wilderness of high recreational value in the densely populated industrial societies, a threatened natural resource in some regions of the world and a renewable reservoir of essential raw materials for the wood processing industry. In June 1992 the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro initiated a world-wide process of negotiation with the aim of ensuring sustainable management, conservation and development of forest resources. Although there seems to be unanimous support for sustainable development from all quarters, there is no generally accepted set of indicators which allows comparisons to be made between a given situation and a desirable one. In a recent summary paper prepared by the FAO Forestry and Planning Division, Ljungman et al. (1999) find that forest resources continue to diminish, while being called upon to produce a greater range of goods and services and that calls for sustainable forest management will simply go unheeded if the legal, policy and administrative environment do not effectively control undesirable practices. Does the concept of sustainable forest management represent not much more than a magic formula for achieving consensus, a vague idea which makes it difficult to match action to rhetoric? The concept of sustainable forest management is likely to remain an imprecise one, but we can contribute to avoiding management practices that are clearly unsustainable.

Book Forest Condition in a Changing Environment

Download or read book Forest Condition in a Changing Environment written by Eino Mälkönen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threats posed by air pollution and climate change have resulted in considerable public debate about forest condition and growth during the past two decades. Despite the massive input ofresearch resources, no clear answers have been found to these global questions. Although there have been substantial advances in our knowledge of the effects of air pollutants on the forests, many of the questions associated with forest condition are still open. Monitoring of forest condition at the national level started in Finland in 1985 in accordance with the methodology drawn up by the International Co-operative Programme on Assessments and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests, UN/ECE). Since then, research into forest condition and vitality has been one of the key areas in the research carried out by the Finnish Forest Research Institute. Three basic questions formed the starting point for the multidisciplinary, Forest Condition Research Programme: What changes are taking place in our forests? Why does forest condition vary, and why do trees appear to be suffering? How can forest condition be maintained through appropriate forest management? This report covers forest condition and changes in environmental factors on the of the latest findings, publications and expertise of researchers participated in basis the Forest Condition Research Programme. In addition to researchers from the Finnish Forest Research Institute, a large number of scientists from domestic and foreign universities and research institutes also made a considerable contribution to the research programme.

Book Measurements and Estimations of Forest Stand Parameters Using Remote Sensing

Download or read book Measurements and Estimations of Forest Stand Parameters Using Remote Sensing written by Donald A. Stellingwerf and published by VSP. This book was released on 1997-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generally speaking, the use of remote sensing imagery will reduce field work. Remote sensing imagery gives an overall view of the forest in addition to more detailed information, the extent of which depends mainly on scale and film used in case of analogue data, and mainly on pixel size in case of digital data. This book deals with measurements and estimations of forest stand parameters using aerial photographic, aircraft and satellite scanning data, radar and laser imagery. It includes technical and statistical information of practical examples from both temperate and tropical forests. Statistical analysis of measurement data and sampling techniques are given when required. The obtained results are compared with those from other techniques, showing their relative advantage or disadvantage.

Book Exploiting the Spatial Information in High Resolution Satellite Data and Utilising Multi Source Data for Tropical Mountain Forest and Land Cover Mapping

Download or read book Exploiting the Spatial Information in High Resolution Satellite Data and Utilising Multi Source Data for Tropical Mountain Forest and Land Cover Mapping written by Anke Gleitsmann and published by ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
