This book was released on 1992 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing demand for recreation at the wildland-urban interface throughout the United States poses new challenges for natural resource managers. To enable resource managers and researchers to exchange information and ideas, the first Symposium on Social Aspects and Recreation Research was held. The format of the symposium offered various opportunities for interactive communication among attendees. The proceedings contain a keynote address, abbreviated versions of 27 oral presentations, and summaries of sessions covering poster presentations, simulated field trips, and round table discussions. Issues addressed include these: access, land stewardship and ethics, cultural diversity of recreationists, service delivery strategies, agency-visitor interaction, conflict, partnerships, and data collection techniques.

Book Stewardship Across Boundaries

Download or read book Stewardship Across Boundaries written by Richard L. Knight and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every piece of land, no matter how remote or untrammeled, has a boundary. While sometimes boundary lines follow topographic or biological features, more often they follow the straight lines of political dictate and compromise. Administrative boundaries nearly always fragment a landscape, resulting in loss of species that must disperse or migrate across borders, increased likelihood of threats such as alien species or pollutants, and disruption of natural processes such as fire. Despite the importance and ubiquity of boundary issues, remarkably little has been written on the subject.Stewardship Across Boundaries fills that gap in the literature, addressing the complex biological and socioeconomic impacts of both public and private land boundaries in the United States. With contributions from natural resource managers, historians, environmentalists, political scientists, and legal scholars, the book:develops a framework for understanding administrative boundaries and their effects on the land and on human behavior examines issues related to different types of boundaries -- wilderness, commodity, recreation, private-public presents a series of case studies illustrating the efforts of those who have cooperated to promote stewardship across boundaries synthesizes the broad complexity of boundary-related issues and offers an integrated strategy for achieving regional stewardshi.Stewardship Across Boundaries should spur open discussion among students, scientists, managers, and activists on this important topic. It demonstrates how legal, social, and ecological conditions interact in causing boundary impacts and why those factors must be integrated to improve land management. It also discusses research needs and will help facilitate critical thinking within the scientific community that could result in new strategies for managing boundaries and their impacts.

Book Parks and Carrying Capacity

Download or read book Parks and Carrying Capacity written by Robert E. Manning and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much can we use the environment without spoiling what we find so valuable about it? Determining the carrying capacity of parks and related areas is a perennial question whose urgency grows each year as the number of visits continues to increase. Parks and Carrying Capacity represents a comprehensive assessment of the issue, as it: • offers a historical and conceptual treatment of carrying capacity • describes and illustrates research approaches for assessing carrying capacity, including qualitative and quantitative surveys, normative theory and methods, visual research approaches, trade-off analysis, and simulation modeling • examines management alternatives for limiting the environmental and social impacts of visitor use • considers the broader question of environmental management and how the issue of carrying capacity can be applied more generally • discusses how the theory and methods associated with managing the carrying capacity of parks and protected areas might be extended to other areas of environmental management The book includes a series of case studies that describe research programsdesigned to support analysis and management of carrying capacity at eight diverse units of the U.S. National Park System, and an additional case study that explores how the foundational components of carrying capacity (formulating indicators and standards, monitoring, and adaptive management) are being applied in an increasing number of environmental and natural resources fields to address the growing urgency of sustainability. Parks and Carrying Capacity is an important new work for faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and researchers in outdoor recreation, park planning and management, and natural resource conservation and management, as well as for professional planners and managers involved with park and outdoor recreation related agencies and nongovernmental organizations.
