Download or read book Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Royal Society of Victoria and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, Vol. 4 The sponge which forms the subject of the present communication exhibits a very interesting modification of the usual Sycon type of Calcisponge organisation. If we imagine a colony of the Sycon genus Ute, whose component members, growing more or less vertically upwards side by side, have become fused together completely, so that the whole colony forms a single vallate mass in which the individuals can only be recognised externally by their oscula, we have then a tolerably accurate conception of the new genus Synute. The fusion of the Sycon individuals of which the colony is composed is complete (extending right up to the oscula) and universal, and by no means partial or accidental, and the entire colony is protected on the outside by a thick common cortex consisting mainly of huge oxeote spicules. Vosmaer gives the following diagnosis of the genus Ute: - "Tubarskelet gegliedert oder nicht. Peripherisches Skelet hauptsachlich aus grossen, in Schichten gelagerten Stabnadeln bestehend." We may diagnose the genus Synute as follows: - "Sponge forming a colony of Sycon individuals completely fused together into a single mass invested in a common cortex. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, 1887, Vol. 23: Edited Under the Authority of the Council of the Society, Issued 20th April, 1887 The progress of Science, though a natural and orderly development, does not take place at a uniform rate. New discoveries do not succeed each other with the regularity of the seasons. On the contrary, there are often long periods of apparent stagnation, or at least of but little visible advancement, with intervening epochs of brilliant success. Just as the miner often labours for weeks and months with insignificant returns, and then by a single stroke of the pick unearths a gem of fabulous value, so the scientific investigator may spend weary years of patient research with but little to show for his toil, and then at one happy stroke dazzle the world by some brilliant discovery. Incalculable labour is often expended in following up a wrong clue, in tracing down to the bitter end a path that leads nowhere. Such labour is not really lost. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, Vol. 20: Issued May 30th, 1884 We meet to-night to commemorate another session of the Royal Society of Victoria under somewhat new conditions. Hitherto our annual meeting has always been held in our own house, but the growth of the Society and the consequent increasing demands for admission to our yearly gathering has resulted in uncomfortably crowded rooms in the Royal Society building. The Council decided therefore to hold the meeting this year in more spacious premises, and chose this, the Melbourne Athenaeum, for the purpose. Since the annual gathering in September last our Society has entered on its twenty-fifth session. It has increased its member-roll considerably, and, aided by the annual grant from Parliament to help in printing our Transactions, the Society is also, financially speaking, in a satisfactory condition. Our meetings have been fully occupied with papers and discussions on scientific and technical subjects, and, on the whole, I believe I am justified in congratulating you upon a vigorous and healthy progress, and upon the useful work it has done.
