Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Reunion of the Third Division, Ninth Corps, Army of the Potomac, Held at New York, March 25, 1891 On the cold and stormy winter night of January 19th, 1889, a little company of four men met at the house of Lieutenant R. R. Webbert, in the quiet village of Boiling Springs, about five miles southeast of Carlisle, in the county of Cumberland. Those four men were old soldiers of the Third division, Ninth army corps, Army of the Potomac. The winds whistled a shrill tattoo without, as they gathered about the warm hearth. One of these men was your present efficient secretary, the Honorable M. A. Embick, a member of Company D, Two Hundred and Ninth Regiment, which was commanded by the gallant and lamented McCullough, who laid down his life on the 2d of April, 1865, in front of Petersburg. The other three were Lieutenant R. R. Webbert, of Company A, who had been on the division general's staff; Richard R. Craighead, of Craighead, and William F. Wise, of Boiling Springs, both, also, of my own Company A, of the Two Hundred and Ninth; and here was projected the first reunion of that regiment. This little band, discouraged and fearing as to the results of their endeavor, were discussing the probabilities of success, when Embick said, "elect me secretary and I will make it go." It went. A regimental organization was at one effected by electing Lieutenant Webbert president, and Mr. Embick secretary. On looking around they concluded it was not necessary just then to elect a treasurer. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military History of the Third Division, Ninth Corps, Army of the Potomac The services required of the new troops were especially severe. By day they were schooled in the manual of arms, in the school of the company, in the school of the regiment, and in service pertaining to camp and routine life. Besides these duties, they were placed on the picket and vedette lines, - positions which should only have been entrusted to veteran troops. The picket lines on this front were in such proximity that at one post the Union vedette sat at one end of a log and the Confederate vedette sat at the other end of it. Of course such conditions only lasted during the period when there was a tacit understanding that there should be no firing without due notice given by both sides, but at all times the commotion of camp life, such as the bugle calls, the playing of the band, and the singing at Divine services, could be distinctly heard by the men on the advanced posts. Most of the officers in the several regiments were well schooled in their military duties, and the men were soon in commendable military shape. The sanitation of the camps was very bad. Typhoid fever became epidemic. At least one-third of all the men were sent to the hospitals, and this nu merical weakening of the ranks added greatly to the work of those who re mained fit for duty. It was not uncommon for the men who had been on duty all night to be ordered out at 4 p. M. On the following day to perform the same service again. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glorious Recollections: J. Howard Wert's Lost History of the 209th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, 1864-1865, including the Battles of Bermuda Hundred, Fort Stedman, and Petersburg is a Civil War regimental history originally written in 1894. It was not published at the time and has now been edited and supplemented for today's readers. Wert's text is both a detailed history and a devoted memoir. It describes his regiment's actions in the closing months of the war, particularly its participation in the battles of Bermuda Hundred, Fort Stedman, and Petersburg, and, after the war, its marching in the Grand Review. On the same pages, Wert also shows Civil War memory and veteran pride taking shape. The editors have supplemented Wert's manuscript with introductory and interpretive essays, personal documents from the soldiers, reminiscences from unit reunions, a biographical sketch of its commander, a collective portrait of one of its companies, and the rosters of the entire regiment. The publication of this regimental history, previously unknown, adds to our understanding of Pennsylvania soldiers serving late in the war. Many of them had prior service while others were enlisting for the first time, such as Wert himself. This history also deepens our understanding of J. Howard Wert, one of Pennsylvania's most productive historians, novelists, poets and educators in the late 19th century. His account of a notorious Harrisburg neighborhood, the "Old Eighth Ward," has been republished recently; his "lost world" science fiction novel, Alecto and Ebony, is being prepared for publication; his Civil War poetry has been well-known for over a century; his collection of Battle of Gettysburg artifacts is world famous; and with this book his accomplishment as a military historian comes to light.
