Book Nanomaterials Handbook

Download or read book Nanomaterials Handbook written by Yury Gogotsi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-01-26 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before it was identified as a science and given a name, nanotechnology was the province of the most innovative inventors. In medieval times, craftsmen, ingeniously employing nanometer-sized gold particles, created the enchanting red hues found in the gold ruby glass of cathedral windows. Today, nanomaterials are being just as creatively used to improve old products, as well as usher in new ones. From tires to CRTs to sunscreens, nanomaterials are becoming a part of every industry. The Nanomaterials Handbook provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of nanomaterials. Employing terminology familiar to materials scientists and engineers, it provides an introduction that delves into the unique nature of nanomaterials. Looking at the quantum effects that come into play and other characteristics realized at the nano level, it explains how the properties displayed by nanomaterials can differ from those displayed by single crystals and conventional microstructured, monolithic, or composite materials. The introduction is followed by an in-depth investigation of carbon-based nanomaterials, which are as important to nanotechnology as silicon is to electronics. However, it goes beyond the usual discussion of nanotubes and nanofibers to consider graphite whiskers, cones and polyhedral crystals, and nanocrystalline diamonds. It also provides significant new information with regard to nanostructured semiconductors, ceramics, metals, biomaterials, and polymers, as well as nanotechnology’s application in drug delivery systems, bioimplants, and field-emission displays. The Nanomaterials Handbook is edited by world-renowned nanomaterials scientist Yury Gogotsi, who has recruited his fellow-pioneers from academia, national laboratories, and industry, to provide coverage of the latest material developments in America, Asia, Europe, and Australia.

Book In situ Thermoelectrochemistry

Download or read book In situ Thermoelectrochemistry written by Peter Gründler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first rigorous treatment of thermoelectrochemistry, providing an overview that will stimulate electrochemists to develop and apply modern thermoelectrochemical methods. While classical static approaches are also covered, the emphasis lies on methods that make it possible to independently vary temperature such as in-situ heating of electrodes by means of electric current, microwaves or lasers. For the first time, “hot-wire electrochemistry” is examined in detail. The theoretical background presented addresses all aspects of temperature impacts in the context of electrochemistry.

Book Ninth International Symposium on Environmental Degradation of Materials in Nuclear Power Systems

Download or read book Ninth International Symposium on Environmental Degradation of Materials in Nuclear Power Systems written by Steve Bruemmer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 1776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection presents an exchange of ideas among scientists and engineers about the economic and safety concerns surrounding environmentally induced materials problems which lead to nuclear power plant outages. Scientists and engineers concerned with the environmental degradation processes (corrosion, mechanical, and radiation effects) present their latest results on such topics as life extension/relicensing and materials problems associated with spent fuel storage and radioactive waste disposal. This collection will be of interest to utility engineers, reactor vendor engineers, plant architect engineers, researchers concerned with materials degradation, and consultants involved in design, construction, and operation of water reactors.

Book Materials Chemistry at High Temperatures

Download or read book Materials Chemistry at High Temperatures written by John W. Hastie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conference Overview and the Role of Chemistry in High-Temperature Materials Science and Technology LEO BREWER Department of ChemistIy, University of California, and Materials and Chemical Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA 94720 I don't want to compete with the fascinating historic account that John Drowart gave us, but I would like to go through the history of high don't get the reaction that I get from temperature symposia. I hope I some of my classes when I say, "Remember when such-and-such hap pened during the War?" And I get this blank look, and one of the students will say, "I wasn't born until after the Korean War. " Neverthe less, during World War II, many people in the high-temperature field had their first initiation. But there was one handicap. Owing to security measures, they were not able to interact with one another. Following the War, it was recognized that the high-temperature field was going to expand to meet the demands for materials with unique properties. To meet the demands for new fabrication techniques, it was important to establish better communications among various people. High-tempera ture symposia were established at that time and have continued very frequently, and I'd like to point out why they are especially important for this field. One problem is that it is not easy to work at high temperatures.

Book SiC and Si3N4 Recession Due to SiO2 Scale Volatility Under Combustor Conditions

Download or read book SiC and Si3N4 Recession Due to SiO2 Scale Volatility Under Combustor Conditions written by James L. Smialek and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon carbide (SiC) and Si3N4 materials were tested in various turbine engine combustion environments chosen to represent either conventional fuel-lean or fuel-rich mixtures proposed for high-speed aircraft. Representative chemical vapor-deposited (CVD), sintered, and composite materials were evaluated by furnace and high-pressure burner rig exposures. Although protective SiO2 scales formed in all cases, the evidence presented supports a model based on paralinear growth kinetics (i.e., parabolic growth moderated simultaneously by linear volatilization). The volatility rate is dependent on temperature, moisture content, system pressure, and gas velocity. The burner tests were thus used to map SiO2 volatility (and SiC recession) over a range of temperatures, pressures, and velocities. The functional dependency of material recession (volatility) that emerged followed the form A[exp(-Q / RT)](P[factor x]v[factor y]). These empirical relations were compared with rates predicted from the thermodynamics of volatile SiO and SiO[sub x]H[sub y] reaction products and a kinetic model of diffusion through a moving boundary layer. For typical combustion conditions, recession of 0.2 to 2[micro]m/hr is predicted at 1200 to 1400°C, far in excess of acceptable long-term limits.
