Book Managing the Economics of Owning Leasing and Contracting Out Information Services

Download or read book Managing the Economics of Owning Leasing and Contracting Out Information Services written by Anne Woodsworth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1993, the purpose of this book is to identify and describe the most important factors that must be considered in making decisions about the optimal ways to provide access to information – in short, the best way to use the humans, the machines, and the intangible resources known as information, particularly at the organizational level. In recent years executives have begun to outsource computing and telecommunications functions, primarily to control costs. Traditional libraries and information centres have been disbanded in favour of service contracts or outright leasing of staff. Both the public and private sectors are examining their information service operations from the point of view of cost effectiveness. Decisions about owning versus leasing of information are being made daily. Decision-makers are finding that they must deal differently with funding and budgeting of information systems and libraries from their earlier practice. New paradigms for these service functions already exist. Not only have corporations and governments begun to contract out entire information service operations, but libraries themselves have begun to consider the costs, effectiveness, and implications of outsourcing some of their operations and services. This book provides a framework for decision-makers to view and review information services within their organizations. Entire units, components of libraries and information centres are defined and untangled so that the widest variety of organizations can analyse their own environments. Each chapter is accompanied by comments from a broad range of experts in the information field.

Book Proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on MACHINE LEARNING

Download or read book Proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on MACHINE LEARNING written by Pat Langley and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on Machine Learning provides careful theoretical analyses that make clear contact with traditional problems in machine learning. This book discusses the key role of learning in cognition. Organized into 39 chapters, this book begins with an overview of pattern recognition systems of necessity that incorporate an approximate-matching process to determine the degree of similarity between an unknown input and all stored references. This text then describes the rationale in the Protos system for relegating inductive learning and deductive problem solving to minor roles in support of retaining, indexing and matching exemplars. Other chapters consider the power as well as the appropriateness of exemplar-based representations and their associated acquisition methods. This book discusses as well the extensions to the way a case is classified by a decision tree that address shortcomings. The final chapter deals with the advances in machine learning research. This book is a valuable resource for psychologists, scientists, theorists, and research workers.

This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings represent the work of researchers participating in the 15th European Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security (ECCWS 2016) which is being hosted this year by the Universitat der Bundeswehr, Munich, Germany on the 7-8 July 2016. ECCWS is a recognised event on the International research conferences calendar and provides a valuable plat-form for individuals to present their research findings, display their work in progress and discuss conceptual and empirical advances in the area of Cyberwar and Cyber Security. It provides an important opportunity for researchers and managers to come together with peers to share their experiences of using the varied and ex-panding range of Cyberwar and Cyber Security research available to them. With an initial submission of 110 abstracts, after the double blind, peer review process there are 37 Academic research papers and 11 PhD research papers, 1 Master's research paper, 2 Work In Progress papers and 2 non-academic papers published in these Conference Proceedings. These papers come from many different coun-tries including Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Kenya, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Turkey, UK and USA. This is not only highlighting the international character of the conference, but is also promising very interesting discussions based on the broad treasure trove of experience of our community and partici-pants."
