Book A Life on Fire

Download or read book A Life on Fire written by Connie Cronley and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “How can women wear diamonds when babies cry for bread?” Kate Barnard demanded in one of the incendiary stump speeches for which she was well known. In A Life on Fire, Connie Cronley tells the story of Catherine Ann “Kate” Barnard (1875–1930), a fiery political reformer and the first woman elected to state office in Oklahoma, as commissioner of charities and corrections in 1907—almost fifteen years before women won the right to vote in the United States. Born to hardscrabble settlers on the Nebraska prairie, Barnard committed her energy, courage, and charismatic oratory to the cause of Progressive reform and became a political powerhouse and national celebrity. As a champion of the poor, workers, children, the imprisoned, and the mentally ill, Barnard advocated for compulsory education, prison reform, improved mental health treatment, and laws against child labor. Before statehood, she stumped across the Twin Territories to unite farmers and miners into a powerful political alliance. She also helped write Oklahoma’s Progressive constitution, creating what some heralded as “a new kind of state.” But then she took on the so-called “Indian Question.” Defending Native orphans against a conspiracy of graft that reached from Oklahoma to Washington, D.C., she uncovered corrupt authorities and legal guardians stealing oil, gas, and timber rights from Native Americans’ federal allotments. In retaliation, legislators and grafters closed ranks and defunded her state office. Broken in health and heart, she left public office and died a recluse. She remains, however, a riveting figure in Oklahoma history, a fearless activist on behalf of the weak and helpless.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adoption has been a politically charged subject since the Progressive Era, when it first became an established part of child welfare reform. In A Home for Every Child, Patricia Susan Hart looks at how, when, and why modern adoption practices became a part of child welfare policy. The Washington Childrens Home Society (now the Childrens Home Society of Washington) was founded in 1896 to place children into adoptive and foster homes as a means of dealing with child abuse, neglect, and homelessness. Hart reveals why birth parents relinquished their children to the Society, how adoptive parents embraced these vulnerable family members, and how the children adjusted to their new homes among strangers. Debates about nature versus nurture, fears about immigration, and anxieties about race and class informed child welfare policy during the Progressive Era. Hart sheds new light on that period of time and the social, cultural, and political factors that affected adopted children, their parents, and administrators of pioneering institutions like the Washington Childrens Home Society.

Book Proceedings National Conference of Charities and Correction at the Thirteenth Annual Session Held in St Paul Minn July 15 22 1886 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Proceedings National Conference of Charities and Correction at the Thirteenth Annual Session Held in St Paul Minn July 15 22 1886 Classic Reprint written by Isabel C. Barrows and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings National Conference of Charities and Correction at the Thirteenth Annual Session Held in St. Paul, Minn., July 15-22, 1886 IN accordance with the resolution of the National Confer ence adopted during the Thirteenth Annual Session at St. Paul in Minnesota, the present volume of Proceedings contains fewer pages than the volume for 1885, not because the mate rial presented for publication was less in amount, but because it has been condensed in editing. The same general arrange ment has been followed as in 1885, but slight variations have been rendered necessary by the exigencies of printing. Thus, the Reports from States, which last year immediately followed the opening addresses, are now placed after the Reports from Committees and special Papers. The number of States and Territories reporting this year is thirty-four, hardly so many as in 1885; nor are the reports themselves so extended. It has not been found possible to preserve uniformity in these reports nor to prepare a general summary for the whole United States, as would be desirable.
