This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1917-1918, Vol. 15 The conductance of gastric juice is mainly due to the free hydrochloric acid which it contains and the same is generally true of the gastric contents. After the introduction of water or solutions (as sugar solutions) of very low conductance, the curve for conductance very Closely follows the curve for free and total acid. This indicates that the equalization of osmotic concentra tion is brought about primarily by secretion of normal gastric juice. After the ingestion of food containing protein the conductance curve usually lies below that for free hydrochloric acid as deter mined by titration because the latter values are high due to gradual dissociation of the protein salt. In the presence of weak organic acid as after fruit ingestion or of phosphate, as where much saliva is swallowed, the conductance falls below titration values and is a better measure of free hydrochloric acid. Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book Proceedings of the Section of Sciences Vol 16

Download or read book Proceedings of the Section of Sciences Vol 16 written by Koninklijke Akademie Van Wetenschappen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Section of Sciences, Vol. 16: 1st Part; December 1913 She found in the nucleus of Zygnema no body that corresponds to the nucleoli of higher plants. There is in the middle of the nucleus a central body that is composed of the greater portion of the cromatin-granules, whilst the rest of the chromatin-granules is situated in the peripheral network between the central body and the nuclear membrane. During karyokinesis the central body splits into many small ones, whilst the granules in the network increase in size. In this way there are formed 20 or more mostly loose chromosomes. A Spirem is not formed. The chromosomes come to lie in a ring round the centre. The nuclear membrane dissolves. Then the chromosomes approach one another, and unite into 4 to 6 tetrads or groups of four, which become arranged in two parallel planes, lying close together. The chromosomes of these two planes separate. No longitudinal splitting takes place. The groups of four now divide into smaller groups, which form two rings. Thereupon the central body is formed, composed usually of the greater number of the chromosomes. A nuclear membrane also appears again. Daughter nuclei with many tetrahedral granules, with several masses and with a single mass are observable. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the National Academy of Science, 1927, Vol. 19 From the various considerations already adduced it Will be quite clear that no general philosophy of petrogenesis should be based upon a study of a portion of the 1gneous recks alone, however complete-it might be' in regard to geological, petrographical, and physico-che'mical circumstances; and therefore, since no study of the intermediate and acid types of normal and alkaline 1gneous rocks has been made by the writer comparable in detail with those upon basic igneous rocks here given, it must be recognized that the generalizations which follow are derived perhaps too exclusively from the' study of basic rocks. If, however, they are found to be an adequate statement of the modes of occurrence of such rocks, they may then be combined with the results of s1m11ar studies upon the other types of rocks into a general petrogenetic theory. While no invariable rules for mode of occurrence of basic intrusive rocks seem yet dis coverable, there emerge from the studies which follow the conception of several modes of occur 'rence, so frequently represented that they' seem to result from fundamental principles of petrogenesis, while the exceptions to these are especially worthy of study, .s1nce in all probability they will throw most light upon the nature of the controlling conditions and the relationships to one another of apparently distinct modes of occurrence.
