Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 51: From May 1915, to May 1916 The many peculiarities of this species, which grows appressed on the antennae Of its host, need hardly be pointed out. The male individual is Of special interest, Since its antheridium is of a type more simple than is usual in this genus; the antheridial cells, of which there appear to be never more than two, cutting Off no basal cell, so that there are present only a long stalk cell, two antheridial cells and the neck for discharge of sperm-cells. The sixth cell of the receptacle in the female individual appears to be the basal cell of the primary appendage, which in other species is Often separated from the append age by a darkened septum. The single secondary appendage is so small and inconspicuous that it may be readily overlooked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 36: From May, 1900, to May, 1901 The large hand evidently belonging to this species is marked in exactly the same manner on the outer aspect as in C. Borealis, having the four distinct raised granulated lines or ridges, with the same arrangement as in the living species. The single specimen lacks the articular face at the base, as also unfortunately the fingers, and also the Spine at the base. Of the four ridges on the inner face, on the lowest ridge there are 32 papillae, or conical granulations; on the ridge above, where they are much smaller, about 33; in the third ridge there are two rows of conical granulations, one consisting of 20 large ones, with a parallel row of minute ones below; on the fourth ridge there are about 12 - 14 large granulations, with smaller ones situated irregularly on the lower side, while some others are interpolated between the large ones. The concavities between the ridges are well marked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1915, Vol. 12 Studies of the behavior of methylene blue, and other dyes, in the ovaries, Show that, in some plants, introduced solutions may be taken up by the placenta and conducted through the funicular stalk to the antipodal region of the embryo-sac, finally staining the egg-cell. In other cases, the cells of the micropylar opening are stained, and the pollen tube in passing through this might be affected, and might also take up free foreign solutions in the open cavity. It is evident, therefore, that in the introduction of substances into such an ovary, the effect would depend upon the simpler mechanical features of the operation, the stage of development of the separate ovules, the progress of the advancing pollen-tubes, and the varying dilution of the reagent in its diffusion through many membranes. The individuals resulting from a treatment, affecting one element only, would be of a hybrid nature: and might be if both were affected to an unlike degree, or in an unlike manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Science, Vol. 27: August, 1915; New Series, Vol. X The apparatus consists essentially of a standard type of radiator haying 60 square feet of radiating surface and which is connected to the steam pipes in the same way as when set up for actual service. A mercury manometer is attached to the inlet pipe to register the pressure of the steam entering the radiator, while a thermometer in the same pipe can be used to indicate the temperature when desired. To the outlet pipe is attached a radiator trap E, a tank B, in which is collected the condensed steam from the radiator, a glass condensing coil, and a glass jar A, which condenses and collects any steam that may pass the trap. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 49: From May, 1913, to May, 1914 The apparatus and the experimental method are in large measure the same as were used in the preceding work on water, and will not be described again in any detail. The methods of computation, however, are somewhat different, and are discussed at some length. It is impossible to give the original data because of lack Of space. However, a few sample curves of the original data are given, and the average error of the compressibility and the expansion measure ments is stated for each liquid. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, 1883, Vol. 1 True to the habits of the spiders to seek those places for their homes that flies frequent. There is one that makes its home at the top of the leaves spinning its web so that it nearly covers the whole Opening. In each case that I have observed it is the same species but whether it always seeks the pitchers, I cannot state. An insect lighting upon the leaf starts immediately to walk toward the inside. It seldom stops till the smooth place is reached where sooner or later it loses its foot-hold and falls. In some cases they try to fly upward from the bot tom of the pitchers. In but one case have I seen an insect escape in this man ner. This, a beetle, obtained its freedom by flying from one side of the tube to the other till the opening was reached. A slight secretion has been observed by many near the opening of the pitcher. This seemingly has but little power to attract insects, though at times it is quite copious. Mr. Joseph Jackson says, While collecting a few specimens of S. Pur purea. L I was surprised on drawing aside the petals to look at the stamens to see the whole cavity formed by the petals and the peltate expansion of the style filled with flies as large as the common house fly, all busy as could be eating the pollen, of which scarcely a grain could be seen. I counted fourteen flies in one flower. They were in no hurry to vacate the premises. There was a shower coming up at the time. But they were evidently there for food. Nearly every plant examined was filled in the same way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
