Download or read book Algebraic and Classical Topology written by I. M. James and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic and Classical Topology contains all the published mathematical work of J. H. C. Whitehead, written between 1952 and 1960. This volume is composed of 21 chapters, which represent two groups of papers. The first group, written between 1952 and 1957, is principally concerned with fiber spaces and the Spanier-Whitehead S-theory. In the second group, written between 1957 and 1960, Whitehead returns to classical topology after a long interval, and participates in the renewed assault on the problems which fascinated him most. This book will prove useful to mathematicians.

Download or read book Homotopy Theory written by I. M. James and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homotopy Theory contains all the published mathematical work of J. H. C. Whitehead, written between 1947 and 1955. This volume considers the study of simple homotopy types, particularly the realization of problem for homotopy types. It describes Whitehead's version of homotopy theory in terms of CW-complexes. This book is composed of 21 chapters and begins with an overview of a theorem to Borsuk and the homotopy type of ANR. The subsequent chapters deal with four-dimensional polyhedral, the homotopy type of a special kind of polyhedron, and the combinatorial homotopy I and II. These topics are followed by reviews of other homotopy types, such as group extensions with homotopy operators, cohomology systems, secondary boundary operator, algebraic homotopy, and the G-dual of a semi-exact couple. The last chapters examine the connected complex homotopy types and the second non-vanishing homotopy groups. This book will be of great value to mathematicians.

Download or read book Complexity of Infinite Domain Constraint Satisfaction written by Manuel Bodirsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs) are natural computational problems that appear in many areas of theoretical computer science. Exploring which CSPs are solvable in polynomial time and which are NP-hard reveals a surprising link with central questions in universal algebra. This monograph presents a self-contained introduction to the universal-algebraic approach to complexity classification, treating both finite and infinite-domain CSPs. It includes the required background from logic and combinatorics, particularly model theory and Ramsey theory, and explains the recently discovered link between Ramsey theory and topological dynamics and its implications for CSPs. The book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in theoretical computer science and to mathematicians in logic, combinatorics, and dynamics who wish to learn about the applications of their work in complexity theory.
Download or read book Handbook of Computability and Complexity in Analysis written by Vasco Brattka and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-04 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computable analysis is the modern theory of computability and complexity in analysis that arose out of Turing's seminal work in the 1930s. This was motivated by questions such as: which real numbers and real number functions are computable, and which mathematical tasks in analysis can be solved by algorithmic means? Nowadays this theory has many different facets that embrace topics from computability theory, algorithmic randomness, computational complexity, dynamical systems, fractals, and analog computers, up to logic, descriptive set theory, constructivism, and reverse mathematics. In recent decades computable analysis has invaded many branches of analysis, and researchers have studied computability and complexity questions arising from real and complex analysis, functional analysis, and the theory of differential equations, up to (geometric) measure theory and topology. This handbook represents the first coherent cross-section through most active research topics on the more theoretical side of the field. It contains 11 chapters grouped into parts on computability in analysis; complexity, dynamics, and randomness; and constructivity, logic, and descriptive complexity. All chapters are written by leading experts working at the cutting edge of the respective topic. Researchers and graduate students in the areas of theoretical computer science and mathematical logic will find systematic introductions into many branches of computable analysis, and a wealth of information and references that will help them to navigate the modern research literature in this field.

Download or read book Theorem Proving in Higher Order Logics written by Richard J. Boulton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Theorem Proving in Higher Order Logics (TPHOLs 2001) held 3–6 September 2001 in Edinburgh, Scotland. TPHOLs covers all aspects of theorem proving in higher order logics, as well as related topics in theorem proving and veri?cation. TPHOLs 2001 was collocated with the 11th Advanced Research Working Conference on Correct Hardware Design and Veri?cation Methods (CHARME 2001). This was held 4–7 September 2001 in nearby Livingston, Scotland at the Institute for System Level Integration, and a joint half-day session of talks was arranged for the 5th September in Edinburgh. An excursion to Traquair House and a banquet in the Playfair Library of Old College, University of Edinburgh were also jointly organized. The proceedings of CHARME 2001 have been p- lished as volume 2144 of Springer-Verlag’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, with Tiziana Margaria and Tom Melham as editors. Each of the 47 papers submitted in the full research category was refereed by at least 3 reviewers who were selected by the Program Committee. Of these submissions, 23 were accepted for presentation at the conference and publication in this volume. In keeping with tradition, TPHOLs 2001 also o?ered a venue for the presentation of work in progress, where researchers invite discussion by means of a brief preliminary talk and then discuss their work at a poster session. A supplementary proceedings containing associated papers for work in progress was published by the Division of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.
Download or read book Mathematical Foundations of Image Processing and Analysis Volume 2 written by Jean-Charles Pinoli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Imaging is currently a rapidly growing field in applied mathematics, with an increasing need for theoretical mathematics. This book, the second of two volumes, emphasizes the role of mathematics as a rigorous basis for imaging sciences. It provides a comprehensive and convenient overview of the key mathematical concepts, notions, tools and frameworks involved in the various fields of gray-tone and binary image processing and analysis, by proposing a large, but coherent, set of symbols and notations, a complete list of subjects and a detailed bibliography. It establishes a bridge between the pure and applied mathematical disciplines, and the processing and analysis of gray-tone and binary images. It is accessible to readers who have neither extensive mathematical training, nor peer knowledge in Image Processing and Analysis. It is a self-contained book focusing on the mathematical notions, concepts, operations, structures, and frameworks that are beyond or involved in Image Processing and Analysis. The notations are simplified as far as possible in order to be more explicative and consistent throughout the book and the mathematical aspects are systematically discussed in the image processing and analysis context, through practical examples or concrete illustrations. Conversely, the discussed applicative issues allow the role of mathematics to be highlighted. Written for a broad audience – students, mathematicians, image processing and analysis specialists, as well as other scientists and practitioners – the author hopes that readers will find their own way of using the book, thus providing a mathematical companion that can help mathematicians become more familiar with image processing and analysis, and likewise, image processing and image analysis scientists, researchers and engineers gain a deeper understanding of mathematical notions and concepts.
