Book Genetic Enhancement of Rabi Sorghum

Download or read book Genetic Enhancement of Rabi Sorghum written by Sanjana Reddy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic Enhancement of Rabi Sorghum – Adapting the Indian Durras presents both the historical background and the recent research done in breeding this important world crop for more global production. Its chapters cover topics in origin and taxonomy, morphology and breeding behavior, genetics, and cytogenetics, also looking at production, nutrition, and alternate uses. The durra race is Ethiopian in origin and its introgression with wild forms permitted adaptation to drier conditions. These have migrated and adapted to the currently known crop that is cultivated in the winter season and commonly called rabi sorghums. Grown under receding soil moisture conditions, rabi sorghums have tolerance to abiotic stresses apart from biotic stresses, unlike the rainy sorghums that are grown widely in the world. However, they must be more resilient to rapid changes in climate, for example. The variability from winter sorghums is being introgressed into rainy sorghums. With the yield plateaus reached and sorghum gaining importance as a food crop, this book will be of importance to those studying durras and their breeding. Presents both the historical background and most recent research done in breeding rabi sorghum for more global production Provides information on the adaptation of the crop and the ways it has migrated to the currently known crop, which is cultivated in winter season and commonly called as rabi sorghum Explores strategies for resilience as the crop must be prepared to withstand rapid and varying changes in climate

Book Biology of the Plant Bugs Hemiptera Miridae

Download or read book Biology of the Plant Bugs Hemiptera Miridae written by Alfred George Wheeler and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant bugs--Miridae, the largest family of the Heteroptera, or true bugs--are globally important pests of crops such as alfalfa, apple, cocoa, cotton, sorghum, and tea. Some also are predators of crop pests and have been used successfully in biological control. Certain omnivorous plant bugs have been considered both harmful pests and beneficial natural enemies of pests on the same crop, depending on environmental conditions or the perspective of an observer. As high-yielding varieties that lack pest resistance are planted, mirids are likely to become even more important crop pests. They also threaten crops as insecticide resistance in the family increases, and as the spread of transgenic crops alters their populations. Predatory mirids are increasingly used as biocontrol agents, especially of greenhouse pests such as thrips and whiteflies. Mirids provide abundant opportunities for research on food webs, intraguild predation, and competition.Recent worldwide activity in mirid systematics and biology testifies to increasing interest in plant bugs. The first thorough review and synthesis of biological studies of mirids in more than 60 years, Biology of the Plant Bugs will serve as the basic reference for anyone studying these insects as pests, beneficial IPM predators, or as models for ecological research.

Book Genetic Methods and Tools for Managing Crop Pests

Download or read book Genetic Methods and Tools for Managing Crop Pests written by A. K. Chakravarthy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-21 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume aims at bringing together all the genetic engineering tools for managing various types of crop pests. The main focus of this book is to explore the application of these tools in pest management. Major pest groups covered in this book are insects, mites and nematodes. The first section covers all major genetic tools and molecular approaches. The second section deals with genetic tools for of beneficial containing three chapters involving honey bees, silkworms and natural enemies. Next section deals with genetic interactions against pests in diverse geographical regions with special focus on Africa, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. Sections four and five addresses diverse aspects as management of pests, genetic behavior, gene expression, plasticity, pathways and interactions and options for mitigation of pests. It serves as a useful resource for professionals in the fields of entomology, agronomy, horticulture, ecology, and environmental sciences, as well as to agricultural producers and plant biotechnologists.

Book Agricultural Entomology

Download or read book Agricultural Entomology written by Dennis S. Hill and published by Timber Press (OR). This book was released on 1994 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Entomology presents a global view of the insect groups that are of major significance to human resources. "Agriculture" in this broad sense includes plants grown for food, horticultural field crops, and other ornamentals. Information is also included on insect pests of stored products, forest resources, and livestock, although in less detail. The book is intended for use as a college text and reference and assumes a basic knowledge of entomology but is also of great value outside the classroom for its comprehensive and detailed approach. There is a chapter on beneficial insects, including pollinators, honeybees, silkworms, and insects from which shellac and cochineal are made. Hundreds of high-quality line drawings and black-and-white photographs illustrate the insects, and an illustrated glossary and indexes of scientific and common names are provided. Almost all countries of the world are undergoing agricultural diversification programs with the introduction of new and exotic crops. Yet most books on insect pests restrict coverage to one country or region or to the tropics or temperate zones. The global approach of Agricultural Entomology emphasizes the similarities and important differences between insect pests of the major continents. It thus brings attention to insect species that might well spread as pests to new geographical areas. Closely related species are also treated, highlighting problems of control that could result from unsubstantiated identifications. Agricultural Entomology is a valuable resource for growers and gardeners interested in the developing field of integrated pest management. With copious information on the biology of insects around the globe, this authoritative and comprehensive book is an essential tool for anyone interested in understanding both the foes and allies of the insect world.
