Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing knowledge and information about the relationship between food and health have led to new insights into the effects of physiologically functional food factors on reducing the risk of life style-related diseases. These insights have contributed to the development of functional food science as a partner of existing nutritional and food sciences. This partner is already a matter of global concern, coming to occupy a central position of bioscience and bioindustry in many countries of the world. The main theme of the conference was Food factors: physiologic functions and disease risk reduction with comprised a variety of subthemes: Nutrigenomics, Mineral functions, Carbohydrate functions, Functional proteins and peptides, Probiotics and immunology, Oxidative stress and biomarkers, Cancer prevention, Antioxidative factors, Functional foods and FOSHU, Anti-inflammation and anti-infection, Calorie and health, Food safety and epidemiology, Food technology and industry for health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the program committee of the Fifth International Symposium on Atherosclerosis was to bring together experts in many disciplines to broaden the scope of the attack on this disease and to foster interaction. Our hope was that such interaction would accelerate the eradication of the disease. The symposium achieved that objective and con tinued the tradition of the previous symposia in providing a forum for summaries of recent research developments in the study, treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis. The leading authorities and researchers in this field and in the related areas of interest have presented the newest information, concepts and ideas that have evolved in the past three years since the previous meeting in Tokyo. The most promising fields for future investigation are clearly identified, as are the nature of the controversies that persist in some highly important aspects of treatment of this disease. The appearance of these proceedings so soon after the meeting will greatly enhance the impact of the symposium on current research in atherosclerosis. The program committee is particularly indebted to the excellent response of the inves tigators for their willingness to participate in the symposium and for their successful efforts in bringing high quality to their presentations. Their cooperation in the expeditious delivery of manuscripts for this volume has been particularly gratifying. The efforts of Ms. Barbara Allen in preparing this volume bear special note.

Book Lipoproteins in Health and Disease

Download or read book Lipoproteins in Health and Disease written by John Betteridge and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-04-02 with total page 1328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive work deals with the major health problem of high lipid levels in blood, a cause of serious heart and vascular disease. Formerly the province only of the chemical pathologist, cardiologists and general physicians are now offering treatment as new 'lipid-lowering' drugs become available. The area is also of considerable interest to public health physicians as changes in lifestyle (such as dietary and smoking habits) have significant effects on lipid levels. A prestigious team of contributors covers all aspects of the topic, from molecular biology to practical dietary management to help reduce lipid levels.

Book Genetic Factors In Nutrition

Download or read book Genetic Factors In Nutrition written by Hector Bourges and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic Factors in Nutrition presents the proceedings of the International Workshop on Genetic Factors in Nutrition, held in Teotihuacan, Mexico, on August 4-8, 1982. The papers explore the link between genetics and nutrition in the context of biological evolution. They provide examples of successful interaction between the two disciplines and consider some aspects of nutrient requirements, as well as utilization and consideration of methodological approaches to evaluate nutritional status, with an emphasis on malnutrition. Divided into six parts encompassing 29 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of genetics and nutrition from an evolutionary perspective, citing findings among Amerindians. It proceeds with a discussion of the potential application of genetic epidemiology in nutritional research, nutrient requirements and metabolism, the association between obesity and energy balance, and assessment of nutritional status. It also presents case studies of the correlation between genetics and nutrition before introducing the reader to genetic inheritance and growth in human groups suffering from chronic under-nutrition. Some data derived from nutrition longitudinal studies are analyzed to interpret the nutrition-genetics interaction. This book will be a valuable source of information for scientists and students in genetics and nutrition.
