This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim in this work is to address, through historical narrativization of some specific moments of colonial state building, the question: What, in theory, are the historical specificities of the 'colonial' state as distinct from other state forms? An attempt is made in this book, to weave together the discourse of state theory and the narrative of state practices. This approach is based on the argument that theory was not something out there to guide practice. Empirical evidence suggests a more complex picture of interaction between the two where, within parameters structured by theory, the practice in turn produces and structures theory at each conjuncture.

Book Towns and Cities of Medieval India

Download or read book Towns and Cities of Medieval India written by Aniruddha Ray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much anticipated volume looks at the historical evolution of towns and cities in medieval India from the early thirteenth to the late eighteenth century. The selection is based on the availability of documents. These include the narratives of European travellers in English, French, Italian, Dutch, and German with the exception of Ibn Battuta in mid-fourteenth century and also Middle Bengali literature in case of towns in Bengal. While the coastal towns and cities have been looked at, the interior ones are also described on the basis of the writings of later historians and archaeologists. Care has been taken to explain the rise, growth and the decline of some towns and cities in which the changing courses of rivers had played a crucial role. Attempts have been made to search other factors responsible for such eventualities. The delineation of physical features within the city has been given due emphasis including the different quarters of the city and the manners and customs of the local population with reference to craft production and commercial links. The morphological differences between the cities of eastern and those of the western or northern India have also been described. This is clear from the observations of port towns described here. All these would show that India was one of the most urbanized area in the medieval period before advent of the British.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Sati written by Meenakshi Jain and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Bentinck's Regulation XVII of 1829, which declared sati a criminal offence, marked the culmination of a sustained campaign against Hinduism by British Evangelicals and missionaries anxious to Anglicize and Christianize India. The attack on Hinduism was initiated by the Evangelist, Charles Grant, an employee of the East India Compani and subsequently member of the Court of Directors. In 1792, he presented his famous treatise, Observations on the State of Society among the Asiatic Subjects of Great Britain. A harsh evaluation of Hindu society, it challenged the then current Orientalist policy of respecting Indian laws, religion, and customs set in motion by the Governor General, Warren Hastings. Grant argued that the introduction of the language and religion of the conquerors would be "an obvious means of assimilating the conquered people to them". He was joined in his endeavours by other Evangelicals, and Baptist missionaries who began arriving surreptitiously in Bengal from 1793. This is not a work on sati per se. It does not address, in any depth, issues of the possible origins of the rite; its voluntary or mandatory nature; the role, if any, of priests or family members; or any other aspect associated with the actual practice of widow immolation. Its primary focus is on the colonial debate on sati, particularly the role of Evangelicals and Baptist missionaries. It argues that sati was an "exceptional act," performed by a miniscule number of Hindu widows over the centuries. Its occurrence was, however, exaggerated in the nineteenth century by Evangelicals and Baptist missionaries eager to Anglicize and Christianize India. - from dust jacket.

Book Psychology Serving Humanity Proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology

Download or read book Psychology Serving Humanity Proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology written by Saths Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of two volumes collecting the key proceedings of the 30th International Congress of Psychology, the first to be held in Africa in the 123 years of its history. The theme of the conference was "Psychology Serving Humanity", a recognition of psychology's unfulfilled mission in the majority world and a reflection of what that world requires from psychology. Mainstream Psychology finds its largest number of exponents and leading personalities in the high income countries of the global West. The Other Psychologies, referred to by different names, are scattered across the rest of the world. Some of the names of these other forms of Psychology include indigenous Psychology. The main driver of indigenous and other forms of non-mainstream Psychology is the endeavour to embed the discipline in the dynamics of local societies. Psychology has entered an interesting era, however. While the dominant philosophy underpinning the discipline remains Western, Psychology in the majority world in 2000s may have reached a tipping point. It took over a hundred years but the 2004 and 2012 International Congresses of Psychology held in China and South Africa heralded a newfound possibility for the discipline. There is an opening of the field to potentially new thought and forms of the practice of Psychology. These proceedings are published in the hope that all psychologists, especially those located in well-resourced institutions in the West, confront the divided reality that characterizes Psychology so as to creatively consider the opportunity opened up by the growing field at the peripheries. Care was taken when assembling both conference and proceedings to ensure that the entire international psychological community was represented. Volume One contains contributions to Majority World Psychology. Volume Two contains contributions to Western Psychology.

Book The Federal Cabinet of Pakistan

Download or read book The Federal Cabinet of Pakistan written by Naumana Kiran Imran and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of the Federal Cabinet of Pakistan in the decision-making and policy formulation processes from 1947 to 1977. It challenges the common perception that the Federal Cabinet was a voiceless institution, and only the military and civil bureaucracies played a pivotal role in the decision-making process. The book also highlights how all three institutions including the civil bureaucracy, the military bureaucracy, and the cabinet were effective besides a few prominent individuals, especially while dealing with political and economic matters. The book utilizes newly-declassified cabinet files, which include minutes of cabinet meetings, decisions taken by various cabinets, and the working papers and summaries presented to them by ministries on many important issues, to conclude that the role of the cabinet as an institution in strengthening democracy in the country was a mixed one. The cabinet strengthened democracy by allowing ministers, representing different shades of opinion and social groups, to share power by coming to a consensus on vital issues with the head of the government, but its undemocratic decisions such as the use of the military or dismissal of the provincial governments and governors weakened democracy.
