Download or read book The Information Processing Theory of Organization written by John L. Kmetz and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, revised in 2021, this volume develops and tests an information-processing model of organization, within the context of the accession of a new generation of a production technology. The model conceptualizes organizations as systems which accomplish their objectives through the processing of information. The book begins with the conceptual basis of the theory, developing the fundamental concepts of information, information processing, and technology. The accession of an automatic avionics tester during the 1970s and 1980s is the change in production technology used to test the theory. The theory is tested by mapping and analysing performance with a three-wave longitudinal field experiment and objective performance measures in the workflow of a very complex system, the U.S. Navy’s avionics maintenance organization. The information processing capacity of the system is shown to be the primary determinant of system performance, with or without the use of information technology. Additional support for the theory comes from newer test and information technologies deployed in the 1980s and 1990s. Implications of this theory for current generations of test technology are provided in the final chapters, along with further development of the theory and its general application to many types of organizations.
Download or read book Photorealistic Rendering Techniques written by Georgios Sakas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the final versions of the proceedings of the fifth EUROGRA PHICS Workshop on Rendering held in Darmstadt, Germany, between 13-15 June 1994. With around 80 participants and 30 papers, the event continued the successful tradition of the previous ones establishing the event as the most im portant meeting for persons working on this area world-wide. After more than 20 years of research, rendering remains an partially unsolved, interesting, and challenging topic. This year 71 (!) papers have been submitted from Europe, North America, and Asia. The average quality in terms of technical merit was impressive, showing that substantial work is achieved on this topic from several groups around the world. In general we all gained the impression that in the mean time the technical quality of the contributions is comparable to that of a specialised high-end, full scale conference. All papers have been reviewed from at least three members of the program committee. In addition, several colleagues helped us in managing the reviewing process in time either by supporting additional reviews, or by assisting the members of the committee. We have been very happy to welcome eminent invited speakers. Holly Rush meier is internationally well known for her excellent work in all areas of rendering and gave us a review of modelling and rendering participating media with em phasis on scientific visualization. In addition, Peter Shirley presented a survey about future rends in rendering techniques.
Download or read book Life Cycle Costing written by B. Dhillon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1989-09-11 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product acquisition involves an examination of the support cost of major equipment over its total life years. Depending on the type of equipment, support costs may range from 10 to 100 times the cost of acquisition. "Life Cycle Costing: Techniques, Models and Applications" offers a comprehensive approach to the entire field, and treats it in such a
Download or read book Chaotic Climate Dynamics written by A. Selvam and published by Luniver Press. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmosphere is a chaotic system. As such it is inherently unpredictable. The book applies chaos theory to understand and predict climate systems. Author presents a cell dynamical system model for turbulent fluid flows. The model envisages the irregular space-time fluctuations of the atmospheric flow pattern generated as a consequence of the superimposition of a continuum of eddies. The natural space-time variability is quantified in terms of the universal inverse power-law form of the statistical normal distribution. A range of possible applications of the cell dynamical system model for weather and climate system is discussed. The book provides a comprehensive reference material for scientists and academicians working in the field of atmospheric sciences and related topics.
Download or read book Facilitating the Development and Use of Interactive Learning Environments written by Charles P. Bloom and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent tutoring technology is on the verge of a breakthrough into the mainstream of training and education. Over the past 25 years, researchers have learned not only what it takes to develop an effective intelligent tutoring system (ITS), but also what it takes to deploy and use one--the true barometer of a technology's success. This volume brings together a cross-section of ITS researchers from academia, industry, and the government to talk about their experiences in ITS development and technology transfer, both successful and unsuccessful. Section 1 is devoted to detailed descriptions of tools and methods ITS developers can employ during development to facilitate technology adoption. It includes discussions of the paradigmatic change in learning and instructional design that ITS fosters, techniques for gathering design information for ITS domains where empirical or knowledge-based methods are inappropriate, and the conduct of cost-benefits analyses to facilitate ITS funding decisions. Sections 2 and 3 offer numerous case studies of ITS deployment from both industry and the government. All of these case studies--regardless of outcome--provide valuable insights into the dos and don'ts of ITS technology transfer. This volume will be an invaluable resource for all researchers and developers of ITS, as well as for managers and personnel in education and training organizations who must adopt and use ITS technology, and information systems and computing support organization professionals who must support it if it is to succeed.

Download or read book The Psychology of Expertise written by Robert R. Hoffman and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates our ability to capture, and then apply, expertise. In recent years, expertise has come to be regarded as an increasingly valuable and surprisingly elusive resource. Experts, who were the sole active dispensers of certain kinds of knowledge in the days before AI, have themselves become the objects of empirical inquiry, in which their knowledge is elicited and studied -- by knowledge engineers, experimental psychologists, applied psychologists, or other experts -- involved in the development of expert systems. This book achieves a marriage between experimentalists, applied scientists, and theoreticians who deal with expertise. It envisions the benefits to society of an advanced technology for capturing and disseminating the knowledge and skills of the best corporate managers, the most seasoned pilots, and the most renowned medical diagnosticians. This book should be of interest to psychologists as well as to knowledge engineers who are "out in the trenches" developing expert systems, and anyone pondering the nature of expertise and the question of how it can be elicited and studied scientifically. The book's scope and the pivotal concepts that it elucidates and appraises, as well as the extensive categorized bibliographies it includes, make this volume a landmark in the field of expert systems and AI as well as the field of applied experimental psychology.
Download or read book Computational Algorithms for Increased Control of Depth viewing Volume for Stereo Three dimensional Graphic Displays written by Steven P. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional pictorial displays incorporating depth cues by means of stereopsis offer a potential means of presenting information in a natural way to enhance situational awareness and improve operator performance. Conventional computational techniques rely on asymptotic projection transformations and symmetric clipping to produce the stereo display. Implementation of two new computational techniques, an asymmetric clipping algorithm and a piecewise linear projection transformation, provides the display designer with more control and better utilization of the effective depth-viewing volume to allow full exploitation of stereopsis cuing. Asymmetric clipping increases the perceived field of view (FOV) for the stereopsis region. The total horizontal FOV provided by the asymmetric clipping algorithm is greater throughout the scene viewing envelope than that of the symmetric algorithm. The new piecewise linear projection transformation allows the designer to creatively partition the depth-viewing volume, with freedom to place depth cuing at the various scene distances at which emphasis is desired.
