This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the General Conference of the Protestant Missionaries of Japan: Held at Osaka, Japan, April, 1883 In May of 1881 the missionaries of the American Board's Mission and the Church Missionary Society held conferences of their respective missions in Kobe and Osaka, and as there appeared to be a natural desire for a united gathering, one was held in Kobe on May 13th, to which all the missionaries in the neighbourhood were invited, including representatives from the missions of the American Board, Church Missionary Society, Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Evangelical Association, and American Episcopal Church. That meeting, characterized by a spirit of sympathy, unity and love, will long be remembered by those who were privileged to attend it. Men of different nationalities and connected with different church organizations all felt it good to meet together in the name of our one Lord and only Saviour Jesus Christ, and hearts were warmed toward Him and each other, as through Him they drew near to the footstool of our common Father in Heaven under the guidance of the Spirit of Unity and Peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ecumenical Foundations Dr. Hogg has given us the definitive history of the origin and the first three decades of the International Missionary Council. Here is also a highly important contribution to our knowledge of missionary cooperation of significant phases of the early stages and development of the Ecumenical Movement. --Kenneth Scott, Latourette of Yale University This book appears at an opportune, one might say, a providential, moment. It focuses attention on the history and significance of the most creative international organization of these last revolutionary decades. It also provides answers to many questions, and clarifies many concepts which perplex intelligent Christians in all the churches. It is impossible to understand the background, genius, and problems of the Ecumenical Movement without recourse to this pioneer attempt to chart its course. --John A. Mackay, of Princeton Theological Seminary Dr. Hogg has done a magnificent piece of work and has provided an historical record of great importance. It is the indispensable volume for understanding one of the main streams of Christian unity. There is no other place where one can get so good a picture of the way in which the missionary movement has led to the present stage in teh ecumenical movement. --Samuel McCrea Cavert, General Secretary, National Council of the Churches of Christ

Book The Cross and the Rising Sun The British Protestant missionary movement in Japan Korea and Taiwan 1865 1945

Download or read book The Cross and the Rising Sun The British Protestant missionary movement in Japan Korea and Taiwan 1865 1945 written by A. Hamish Ion and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influx of Protestant missionaries from Britain to Japan, Korea and Taiwan was an integral part of the British presence in East Asia from 1865 to 1945. Ion draws on both British and Japanese sources to examine the life, work and attitudes of the British missionaries, women and men, who ventured far from their homeland to preach the gospel. He explores the role played by British Protestants as both Christian missionaries and informal ambassadors of their own country and civilization. Through their educational, social and medical work the missionaries helped introduce Western ideas and social pursuits which in turn affected different facets of society and culture in Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The study illustrates how the British missionaries’ intent to introduce Christianity was affected by the response of the East Asians to Western ideas. In describing the high drama of the British missionary movement’s pioneering days in the late nineteenth century to its persecution during the late 1930s, Ion casts light on a particular, yet important, aspect of the changing tides of Anglo-Japanese relations. This book will ably complement his previous study of Canadian missionaries in East Asia during the same period. Chosen as one of the 15 outstanding books of 1993 for mission studies by the International Bulletin of Missionary Research.

Book American Missionaries Christian Oyatoi and Japan 1859 73

Download or read book American Missionaries Christian Oyatoi and Japan 1859 73 written by Hamish Ion and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan closed its doors to foreigners for over two hundred years because of religious and political instability caused by Christianity. By 1859, foreign residents were once again living in treaty ports in Japan, but edicts banning Christianity remained enforced until 1873. Drawing on an impressive array of English and Japanese sources, Ion investigates a crucial era in the history of Japanese-American relations the formation of Protestant missions. He reveals that the transmission of values and beliefs was not a simple matter of acceptance or rejection: missionaries and Christian laymen persisted in the face of open hostility and served as important liaisons between East and West.
